1. In relation to your chosen workplace / place of learning, provide examples of policies / codes of conduct that encourage and / or protect equality and diversity.

MY current work place is Hilton hotel and my current learning place is Garth Hill Collage. Uniform Policy

Garth Hill College has a Uniform Policy .Everybody gets the choice of wearing winter uniform or summer uniform in summer; we can choice between wearing a skirt or trousers. We can choice between wearing a college jumpers and not wearing jumpers. It prevents bullying and allows for Christians to wear a cross and Indian girl to wear a headdress, school uniform policy allows equality but respects diversity. This uniform policy applies to all pupils 7 to 11 boys and girls.

Behaviour Policy

Garth Hill College has a behaviour Policy. The aim of this policy is to help establish and promote a positive ethos and atmosphere in the school. The students are aware of the behaviour expected of them and are expected to behave in that way. We are all treated the same and are expected to behaviour regardless this enables a safe learning environment. If we misbehave then we get dentations this applies to everyone 7 to 11, girls and boys. An example of this is: when a student is late 3 times in one week the student gets a 30 minute detention.

Anti-Bullying Policy
Garth Hill College has an Anti-Bullying Policy to insure a responsible and happy learning environment. The aim of the policy is to create a culture in which all individuals are respected and to promote an understanding of the importance of diversity and equality. We are all expected to report any bullying happening inside the college to a member of staff or per-mentor. An example of this is: a student is being bullied another student tells a member of staff and the bulling is stopped.

2. In relation to your chosen workplace / place of learning, describe what is expected of members of staff who have specific responsibility for equality and diversity. Include information about their job titles and describe their responsibilities.

Mr Grainger: Head teacher, staffing and Equality Policy, responsible for staff discipline and recruitment. He advertises for a new member of staff when needed. He is in charge of the teachers being treated fairly both genders. It’s up to him on who get recruited and given a job here at Garth Hill College. When he finds a good candidate for the job, he will interview the candidate and if he/she suits the necessary acquirements then he/she might get the job. Mr Grainger advertises for a job vaccine by putting an advert in the local newspaper and on the Garth Hill College website.

Mrs Powell: She is a Vice Principal and is in charge of behaviour and student discipline.

Mrs Renny: Safeguarding and Anti-Bullying, child protection officer. She is a senior teacher who is in charge of safe guarding and anti-bulling. It is her responsibility to make sure that all pupils have the same chance of learning. She also needs to ensure that the anti-bullying policy is enforced at all times.
All staff and pupils share this responsibility. To make sure that they work together without gender discrimination or discriminating against people who have different skin colour or comes from a different background from them, if teachers or student are had discriminating on someone with a different background there will be punished.

3. Describe what is broadly expected of all staff in relation to equality and diversity.
The staff of Garth hill collage are expected to be treating their learners with equal respect, this means everybody has the chance to go on educational trips e.g. all learns get to go on the meetings and event that everyone taking responsibility to performing according to the policy. The students are expected to follow the Three R’s (Respect yourself, Respect others, Respect others properties) so are the staff, the students are also expected to treat the staff with respect e.g. If a student is bad they are given three chances and every time they misbehave the lose a chance, misbehaviour 3 time and they get sent out or duty is called. The students are all given an equal chance at getting a good grade. Which means every student can learn it’s up to the student to do the work that has been set. If the student is in school everyday then they increase the chances of getting better grades, which in turn increases their chances of getting a better job.

If a student has a learning difficulty, e.g. EAL (English as an additional language) pupils, then they are given assistance to achieve their full potential as a pupil .e.g. if a student has badly
Coordination- such as bad handwriting then they are given a laptop. To help them, with their handwriting. E.g. a student has anger management problem then the student gets a time-out card.

Teacher is expected to make a report if they see or hear a racist remark to or from another student.
To summarise this means that the teachers are expected to report any inappropriate behaviour of any kind. This is because it helps the overall behaviour inside the college.
To check that they are giving people equal opportunities, the teachers will monitor the student’s behaviour and grades. E.g. when a student isn’t on time to a class then another student with a Lang-lard has to go to pupil reception and notify them.

4. Based on the work you have done in Question 1 – 3; write a short summary of what you have discovered in terms of the organisation’s work on equality and diversity.

In question 1 I learnt that the collage has a series of policies that respects equality and diversity e.g. the uniform policy says that all staff should were the uniform but it also allows for Christians to wear a cross and Indian girls to wear headdresses. The uniform also allows for pupils to choose if they want to wear a jumper or not, but items like; the blazer are not optional, the blazer is compulsory. In order to stop bullying from happening all pupils are treated the same and if any school rules are broken the pupil is punished with a dentition, if he or she misses the dentition then the dentition Gets reset but for longer, this means that to start with the pupil only had A 15 minute so they can get to work within 30 minutes of break.

Question 2 I learnt that Mr Grainger is in charge of staffing and Equality policy, Mr. Grainger is responsible for staff discipline and recruitment. It is up to Mr Grainger on what the school budget gets spent on, He must make the difficult dictions such as what or how to spend the budget on repairing an interactive whiteboard or to spend the budget on fixing the lift. He must advertise if a post at the school is available. I also learnt that Mr Grainger always makes sure that the teachers and students working together properly without discriminating against each other but to work peacefully as one.

Question 3 I learnt that the staff of are expected to treat their pupils with equal respect, which means that everybody has the chance to go on educational to learn the dills they need to work at Garth hill collage .All the staff are expected to report any resisted remarks made by a pupil to Mr Grainger. Also expects the collage To be clean and that the people need to check on the students that that leaves within the collage to make sure that their rooms that they are using are clean. When the students are out of line they will be given a warning first and if the ignore the warning they get detention. The staffs have the responsibility to make sure they have enough staff members to work though out the day and they give everyone a fair chance to prove that they are serious about learning at the collage.

5. Describe how equality and diversity is monitored within your chosen place of work / learning.

They make sure that everyone is treated the same way, in school it is monitored with the CCTV in the school and through teacher lookout, to make sure that we are all treated the same way with the same equality.

• Equality and Diversity are monitored within Garth hill collage by the staff that will watch and made note of your behaviour and make sure that it is up to standards. • They also monitor your computer usage to make sure that no-one is misusing the internet. • • Staffs are expected to make a log if any student is misusing the internet and that student gets banned and have to do an hour of work. To get their internet back. • Pupil behaviour can also be monitored by the CCTV cameras that are around the hotel, apart from in the changing rooms and the toilets. • Pupils can also be monitored by being watched by the staff at break and lunch.

6. Prepare a short report on how your chosen place of work / study promotes (communicates) policies and practices for equality and diversity to employees and external stakeholders (such as customers and the community). Provide specific examples.
The work place I choose is my school and my school has behaviour policies, uniform policies, and cord of conduct and respect the three R’s, respect yourself, respect the school, respect others. • The policies are written inside the first page of the planner, we are reminded of our policies and what they expect of us constantly to keep a safe learning environment. This can also be done though posters such as ‘the three R’s’, using the hand signal, the bulletins are the schools way of telling the parents of the student about the latest school news. Examples of this include everyone has a chance to join in, in clubs and after school activities. Here at Garth every child id given bulletins on Wednesdays which are collected by the bulletins manager. Some people choice to have the bulletin email to them. This promotes equality and diversity by showing that everyone has an equal chance at the college. 8. Describe why the creation and maintenance of an environment that promotes and ensures equality and diversity is desirable. Describe the advantages for the organisation and provide examples.

• Advantages of this are that: • It provides a positive and safe workplace free of discrimination; it creates a calm and relaxed place to work. • Better social environment which adds to the overall work place atmosphere. • If the workplace is calm and organised then more people will want to work there. • It allows a mixture of workers. • It creates a mixture of different • Allows different people to work together
Examples
• Most people know it would be a mistake to make assumptions about how a person will perform in a role on the basis of their gender, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age or disability status. • For individuals who experience discrimination, this can be hugely damaging. But it also has consequences for the teams and organizations around them. • Discrimination, whether conscious or not, limits an organization’s ability to get the best from its workforce. • Employers who promote equality of opportunity among their workforce can draw on a wider pool of talent and experience, and create an environment where employees are valued and supported, and appreciate their colleagues’ contribution. A climate where unlawful discrimination is fostered, condoned or ignored cannot provide these benefits • Employers who are not convinced of the benefits of promoting equality for its own sake must still consider the possibility that an employee or former employee will seek to make a claim against the organization. • Employers who directly discriminate are obviously vulnerable, but so are employers who act capriciously and arbitrarily, who cannot objectively justify their decisions and who conduct themselves in a manner which falls below that generally expected in a modern employment context.
9. Describe the consequences for your chosen organisation of failing to create and maintain a diverse and equal environment. You should consider aspects such as:

• Legal • Economic • Social

Legal
Legal proceedings can be taken against a school who does not keep to Equality law. E.g. not giving SEN pupils support that they are entitled to, not giving employee equal opportunities for promotion. Legal proceedings can be started if pupils are not attending school. This is because the student must go to school and get an education, since the government provides the education the student must go and if they don’t go then they phone calls home, letters then if they still refuse the police gets involved .Legal costs the school money and legal proceedings can be against a school who do not keep to Equality law. E.g. not given SEN pupils support they are entitled to, not giving employee equal opportunities to, not given employee equal opportunities for promotion.

Economic
Any legal proceedings can cost the school a lot of money from paying compensation. If pupils don’t turn up to school then they will not achieve as much as they could do, so they won’t be able to do the jobs they wanted to do. Parents wouldn’t send their children to the school because of less funding from the government and the parents wouldn’t want to get involved in fundraising for the school (PFTA). Organisations that are linked with the school may not want to come to the school; organisations such as 3M and GE meaning that the school wouldn’t get support from them such as giving out awards and students can have trips to the company’s events as well as allowing the student to get apprentships and taster days.

Social
Stress and unhappiness amongst pupils and staff would cause poor relationships between the two parties this would cause less learning and teaching there’d be friction between staff and pupils with no trust or respect from either side.
Teachers and Students would be at each other’s throats, since there are more students in the college than teachers, the teachers might feel outnumbered and powerless to stop the students from leaving.
College would divided; teachers against pupils. This will be a bad constructive learning environment. As well as the college’s reputation would be destroyed and no-one will want to send their children to the college.
Staff turnover would greatly be reduced and with no-one to teach, teachers will be at a loose end and so they wouldn’t be paid, many would move away from college and apply for different jobs. That will pay them well so they will be able to support their families and still pay the bills for all their things that need to be paid for.
