Sustainable Design Versus Aesthetic Design
Design is that area of human experience, where skill and knowledge is concerned with man’s ability to mould the environment according to his material and spiritual needs. It is used to analyse and identify problems to find an appropriate solution. Designers have created all kind of functional designs to help improve people’s lives. They were interested in the nature of beauty, art, and taste and with the creation and appreciation of beauty. Although there are examples of pre-historic art, they are rare and the guidelines that they followed are not so clear, Thus the aesthetic doctrines that guided their production and interpretation one mostly unknown. However, recently designer notice what happing to the world such as global worming due to human action. Then they set some laws in designing for the environment benefit only regardless of what the design look like, where this is not existed before.

However, defining and judging a good design have become rising concern between designers. Some believe in design just for design’s sake and that a design should stand alone and be judged mainly on its aesthetic merits. Others believe that a designer’s role is mainly one of social responsibility and that a good design should be judged by the degree to which it promotes human welfare and environmental sustainability. This essay will explore the functional and environmental concern of The Designers Accord first and then discuss the aesthetic centred approach and will argue that the primary obligation of a designer is to promote the wellbeing of society and the environment without ignoring the aesthetic value in which it is as important as functional and environmental values.

From a concern community of designer, The Designers Accord was born. Swan (2008) defines The Designers Accord as “a coalition of design and innovation firms focused on working together to create positive environmental and social impact” which can be shown by either promoting new products or

    STEP 1 Question A: George Marcus expressed that there is no one proper meaning of design, instead articulating that it implies to all objects surrounding us; “the clothes we wear, the products we use, the vehicles we ride in, the media that communicate with us graphically” (Marcus, 2002, P.7). Influenced heavily by shifts in design movements, and individuals own interpretations, the meaning of ‘design’ has continually changed and it has become almost impossible to pin point one ‘true’ meaning.     The presentation begins with a reference to Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring, which is famous for and regarded as the catalyst for society’s environmental awareness. Following this introduction, McDonough illustrates how society has yet to take into consideration the harmful effect their products have on not only the environment, but on our very children as well. He clearly articulates the problems designers are facing, but are ignoring, through his “rubber duck” example. Upon describing the problems of the present mentality behind designing products, McDonough shows a short clip which suggests that there is a solution. He then goes into asking what the fundamental question for designers is. In other words, what are their intentions? Once their intentions are clarified, then steps can be taken to pursue projects which complement their intentions. The intention of a designer must be to create something that promotes economic and environmental prosperity; anything short of that will lead to problems, as we have clearly seen. The main focus is then turned onto architecture. McDonough uses examples to illustrate how the structures of buildings are environmentally unfriendly; they do not satisfy the designer’s intentions. Therefore, change must be implemented. To fully satisfy their intention, designers are challenged to create products that are essentially alive, i.e. it must be able to grow, use free energy from sunlight, and have an open metabolism. McDonough then goes into breaking down each of these elements of life, and how they influence the designers work. To conclude his presentation, McDonough shows some projects that…
