Eggshells as Hardiflex
What are eggshells made of?

The main ingredient in eggshells is calcium carbonate (the same brittle white stuff that chalk, limestone, cave stalactites, sea shells, coral, and pearls are made of). The shell itself is about 95% CaCO3 (which is also the main ingredient in sea shells). The remaining 5% includes calcium phosphate and magnesium carbonate and soluble and insoluble proteins.

A paint thinner is a solvent used to thin oil-based paints or clean up after their use. Commercially, solvents labeled "Paint Thinner" are usually mineral spirits having a flash point at about 40 °C (104 °F), the same as some popular brands of charcoal starter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint_thinner Polystyrene (PS) /ˌpɒliˈstaɪriːn/ is a synthetic aromatic polymer made from the monomer styrene, a liquid petrochemical. Polystyrene can be rigid or foamed. General purpose polystyrene is clear, hard and brittle. It is a very inexpensive resin per unit weight. It is a rather poor barrier to oxygen and water vapor and has a relatively low melting point.[4] Polystyrene is one of the most widely usedplastics, the scale of its production being several billion kilograms per year http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polystyrene Styrofoam is made up of polystyrene foam. When the polystyrene dissolves in the acetone, the air in the foam is released, causing it to look like you're dissolving this massive quantity of material into a small volume of liquid. You can see a less-dramatic version of the same effect by dissolving other polystyrene items in acetone. Common polystyrene products include disposable razors, plastic yogurt containers, plastic mailers and cd jewel cases. The plastic dissolves in just about any organic solvent, not just acetone. Acetone is found in some nail polish removers. If you can't find this product, you could dissolve styrofoam in gasoline just as easily. It's best to do this project outdoors since acetone,

Prior to the lab, the egg whites were yellow, clear, and slippery. The baking soda was white, powdery, and clumpy much like flour. The citric acid was also white and clumpy but the particles were much larger than baking soda, much like salt. After everything was combined and stirred, the outcome was completely transformed. They have combined together to become a foam like substance that grew all the way up to the rim of the beaker.…

In order to complete this experiment, one of the most important things you need to know how to do is how to take the outer “shell” layer off of the egg. The egg shells contain an element known as calcium carbonate. This element can be turned into carbon dioxide when combined with acetic acid. You can find acetic acid in vinegar. {Guenther, Leanne. “Soft Shelled Eggs.” Kidzone Science, Kidzone Science, 1998, www.kidzone.ws/science/egg.htm.}…
