Two Ways To Draw The Chemical Structure Of Toluene
Description

If you ever painted a wall, then, you have encountered toluene. Toluene has many uses, and it is a chemical compound we use more often than we think. In this lesson, we will be learning all about toluene, which is an organic chemical compound.

!!!Toluene: Structure and Formula

Have you ever used or smelled paint thinners? If you have, then that is how we can describe the smell of toluene. Toluene is one of the ingredients used in manufacturing many commercial products, like paints and glues, so if you ever like crafts and have painted the walls of your house, then, you encounter toluene a lot.

In the explosives industry, it is used to make the flammable, explosive compound, trinitrotoluene (TNT). In the plastics industry, it is used to manufacture nylon and plastic bottles. In the cosmetics industry, it is an ingredient in hair dyes and nail products. It is also used to manufacture inks and paint thinners.

For gasoline, the higher the octane rating, the better. The __octane rating__ of gasoline tells us how much compression gasoline can take before it ignites. When gasoline ignites, this can damage the engine, and that is something we do not want. Toluene is mixed in gasoline because it improves octane ratings. Toluene is also used as a component in jet fuel.

!!!Lesson Summary

__Toluene__, also called methylbenzene, is an organic chemical compound, with a chemical formula of C7H8. It is a colorless liquid that is insoluble in water, with an odor similar to that of paint thinners. It is an __aromatic hydrocarbon__ because benzene ring is present in its chemical structure and the chemical formula consists only of carbon and hydrogen

Objective: The main goal of this lab is to learn how separation of binary liquid mixtures is performed. Especially when the two liquids have boiling points varying by about 30° C. Hexane can be separated from toluene in this experiment because of the difference in their boiling points. Since toluene has a higher boiling point, it will left at the bottom while the hexane starts to boil out and collect in the Hickman still. GC measurements help us in determining how accurate our data is by making a graph of the amount of hexane and toluene in each fraction. Also this lab gives experience with semi-micro distillation in order for experiments in the future that might need this purification setup.…

The goal of this experiment was to separate Toluene and Hexane by distillation and gas chromatography based on their difference in boiling points. The boiling point of hexane is 69 degrees Celsius and the boiling point of toluene is 110 degrees Celsius. Three fractions were collected for both simple and fractional distillation. The first fraction was hexane since it had the lower boiling point. The second fraction was a mixture of toluene and hexane. The third fraction was toluene since it had the high boiling point of 110 degrees Celsius. Gas chromatography was also preformed on each of the fractions from simple and fractional distillation. In the gas chromatography process, the compounds are carried through a stationary phase, and pushed…

Cyclohexane is a saturated hydrocarbon and cyclohexene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon due to the presence of double bond. Both hydrocarbons produce carbon dioxide and water during combustion test. When the oxygen is limited, the product will be carbon monoxide and water. The alkenes are highly flammable and burn readily in air, forming carbon dioxide and water. In this experiment, the combustion of cyclohexene burns in an orange flame and produces relatively high amount of black soot.…

It can be used for things like body armor; body armor made from kevlar is much lighter and yet much stronger than its earlier predecessor. This made the Kevlar body armor a much more desirable piece of equipment. Kevlar is so strong that even a direct shot from a high caliber bullet won’t even dent it. This high tech polymer has saved the lives of tons of people in war fare and even within police forces around small towns just like Greenfield. It has been used in many wars around the world including all the way back to the Vietnam war in which took place in the 1970s. Even today, kevlar mostly used in the form of Kevlar-49 is still used by the military and police officers. This can make a great impact on society in a major…

The chemistry for carbon is vast; there are in excess of ten million known carbon compounds. It is estimated that 300000 new carbon compounds are discovered each year. Organic molecules contain functional groups that are responsible for their chemical properties. Functional groups will react with certain regents in predictable ways, making it possible to develop diagnostic reactions to test for their presence in an organic molecule.…

The simplest organic compounds are hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons contain only two elements, hydrogen and carbon. A saturated hydrocarbon or alkane is a hydrocarbon in which all of the carbon-carbon bonds are single bonds. Each carbon atom forms four bonds and each hydrogen forms a single bond to a carbon. The bonding around each carbon atom is tetrahedral, so all bond angles are 109.5°. As a result, the carbon atoms in higher alkanes are arranged in zig-zag rather than linear…

Amines are a type of hydrocarbon derivative, and they are used in many ways in society. Several companies use amines in products such as drugs and medicines. Also, in nature, amino acids help the body make proteins, and amines are found in many vitamins. For example, DOW Chemicals “plays an important role in commonly used products found around the world” by using amines in the manufacturing of energy drinks, detergents, insulin, etc. This is a very large industry, because it produces necessities for everyday activities. Amines are commonly found in addictive products like caffeine, benzene, any many other common substances. Not only is the industry large, it is very profitable. DOW Chemicals saw a 63% increase in profits 2011 and performance products, such as amines, “also recorded strong sales increases since 2010”. Amines are very important and successful in society, but there is more to learn than how they are used.…

Organic compounds hexane, heptane, cyclohexane, cyclohexene, benzene, and toluene were subjected to different physical and chemical tests todifferentiate their intrinsic physical properties and chemical properties in terms ofstructure and behaviour. Nitration test (test for the presence of aromatic ring), Bromine test (test for the presence of unsaturation), and Basic oxidation test (test for an alkyl substituted benzine) were done. We were given an unknown which we tested (Nitration,Bromine, Basic oxidation) and found out that it was an aromatic unsaturated hydro carbon.…
