Study Shortcuts
Helpful or Harmful
A recent threat to our education system is the rapidly spreading trend of five (5) years, guidebooks, guess papers and coaching centers. 5 year is a booklet containing past papers of last
5 years of a particular subject or of all subjects in a group. 5 years are available both in solved and unsolved forms. Guidebooks are books containing solved objective and subjective question answers based on the past papers. Guess papers are the question papers various publishers publish few weeks before the board exams. They contain up to hundred questions which they guess will be included in the board examination paper. Coaching centers are the private institutions which grantee their customers (students) to secure A+ grade in the board exams and receive a handsome fee in return.
The language, grammar and composition of five years, guidebooks and notes provided by coaching centers are ridiculous. Plenty of mistakes including spelling errors can also be witnessed in them. They provide selective material and discourage thorough study. They spoon feed students and prevent them from mental exercise. They prevent students to innovate and make them a habitual follower.
The sole objective of education is to gain knowledge and attain skills. All afore mentioned mediums of education are ruining it. All these study shortcuts have minimized the goal of education to pass the examination only. Students memorize whatever these shortcuts provide them. Spit it out on the examination answer sheets. Get grades and that is it. Students unfortunately, find it convenient to follow five years, guidebooks, guess papers and coaching centers but as they say if the going seems easy you are going downhill.
As a result, these study shortcuts are producing repeater parrots instead of educated people. They are looting students by providing

To all students and teachers studying is the fundamental path to mastering a subject or lesson. But studying is no longer the simple definition of opening a book and reading with notes being taken on the side. Because of our current understanding of the human mind and the way the brain functions we have discovered that many students who would be originally dismissed as “lazy”, “unfocused” or more harshly described as “stupid” are in fact people who do not process data the traditional means. For these people using the simple and archaic form of studying does not truly benefit them, for people like myself the simple opening a book and reading it is not as helpful as watching videos or demonstrations about the subject or listening to someone explain…

Firstly in the article “Your So-Called Education” Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa adds substance to the point they are trying to prove by inserting statistics into their article. For example the first point being communicated is that students aren’t making the progress they are supposed to make. The reason the authors give is that institutions rely primarily on student evaluations of courses instead of academic departments and professors remaining rigorous. Due to this institutions are becoming less strict and students are just getting without putting in the hours of studying. Arum and Roska state that 36 percent of students studied…

Have you ever felt that lost? Have you ever felt that you know you must finish something quickly but do not know how to start with? Students always feel that when homework’s due day is coming in the next few hours. The teachers always make some dead line to request students to finish their assignments in time. But sometimes those students do not know what information they are studying, they just know that those are requirements for good grade. To a certain extent, students are becoming study machines. As John Taylor Gatto argued in the article “Against School”, “Schools are to establish fixed habits of reaction to authority, to make kids learn, and do, foolish and boring things (P.152).” Also, in the article “Idiot Nation”, Michael Moore criticized that Americans are sliding into idiots because of problem schooling. Those showed there are some problems exist in the American public school system. In order to improve the American public school system, students’ critical thinking skills must be improved. To do so, school administrators and teachers can do some changes for their curriculums, such as school should reduce the use of standardized testing, teachers can use case study method and cooperative learning strategy instead of boring lecture.…

In the earlier days, admission to higher and professional studies was essentially based on the performance in the entrance examinations conducted annually by various High Schools. The gradual degeneration of the conventional examination system manifested in frequent leakage of question papers, manipulation of marks, copying and use of unfair means by all involved. Entrance examinations have been devised by some reputed institutions to screen the large set of students coming from vastly different backgrounds for admission. The traditional manual entrance examination is successful example conducted by INCAT. But nowadays, the population of the students is getting bigger. So with this kind of system, it will be easier for the part of the school and the student to take the entrance examination and to keep record of the students and will show the result immediately. It will not be prone to leakage because it will be stored properly and the school will keep this as one copy to avoid leakage.…
