Planning the Day. a Visit to an Orphanage
It was August the 15th, our Independence day. The day on which we had planned to do something special, something different, something we haven’t done so far. So we started thinking about what can be done which could make us and others happy. And suddenly this idea popped up in our mind, to visit an Orphanage and donate groceries, clothing’s, stationeries etc.

So we started to plan, asking our friends if they would be interested, because we believed that more the people more we can contribute to them. And believe me this idea was damn good, every person we called up and asked agreed to this and made his contribution. So we started to find out orphanages which are situated nearby. And we found some so we went there and fixed our appointment to visit them on 15th of August.

Now we had everything perfectly planned. Our appointments were fixed. Next we started to work on things to be bought to donate, and things to be brought from home. Since we had good number of people somewhere around 20-25, so the contribution was good and we could get good amount of things.

We bought pen, crayons, pencils, erasers, scales etc in stationary. We bought rice, lentils, wheat etc in groceries and we got clothes from our home. So the contribution made by us was good enough.

Finally the day arrived; it was 15th of August, our independence day. We reached there in the morning. When we reached there, I was happy to see a lot of decorations to welcome us. The children were already prepared for our arrival and were sitting in lines orderly. We tried to be cheerful and friendly to the children by waving and smiling at them. They looked happy and excited about our visits. They smiled, laugh, and clap when we talk to them. We gave all the things we got for them and then had fun with kids. They had a painting competition and an essay competition that day. All of them did well. Their names and cheers were creative and meaningful. They were energetic when shouting their cheers. We

Some really effective moments when we worked as a team was when we had to organise the fish and chips and when we had to set up for the quiz night, we all stuck together and set up the hall in under an hour. I think that at the end of the event once we had counted how much we had raised, we all felt proud of ourselves at what we had achieved and this really showed as we were excited to let our guests know how much they had helped us and the charity.…

Sunday is the main events so the runners for the half and full marathon came in to retrieve their information packets, and shirts which they will wear during each run. Before I was assigned to work with a few other ladies behind the Shirt Distribution stand, the staff explained to all the volunteers about the water pouches that will be available to use during the events, and briefly demonstrated how the new water pouches worked, and how we should hold the water for the runners as the passed by. At the Shirt Distribution stand, we handed out long sleep shirts for each race, and collected the Shirt tabs which were located on each runner’s bibs. Once we collected the tabs, we each placed them in a clear plastic tub, which the head of staff would use to count if they needed to know how many shirts were distributed. We each took on equal responsibilities for the shirt distribution tasks, and when we were not busy; we conversed and got to know one another a little better. Pizza and burgers were provided for lunch, along with some water or soda to drink. Starbucks was available for everyone to drink freely, and cupcakes were being donated for two dollars towards charity. One of the supporters was a ballet company touring for the holidays, so they chose to put on a free short performance for the visitors at the Freedom Marathon Exposition, while giving the children a free lesson on how to properly stretch the muscles in their body. I thought it was great way to market the business and to get local patrons interested and eager to see more. I found it interesting to see that all ages were running or walking the marathons and it open my eyes up to how many people are actively involved in the community. Everyone was really humble and patient while waiting to receive their shirts which allowed the…

I did not really know what we would be doing until I arrived at the hospital and their community service coordinator was talking to us. We spent time collecting donations and using some of the money Psi Otes had in their funds, to go buy coloring books, crayons, and various other little toys to put together a fun little package for children who are receiving painful and extensive treatments. This was very touching because the coordinator expressed how much this meant to the doctors and the children that we were putting in some of our time to help others. She was so happy that she started to cry and this made me feel really good about myself and very much appreciated. After this event and knowing how much my volunteering helped them made me want to continue to help Riley’s Children’s Hospital.…

It was my favorite activity because it was a celebration for the homeless. It gave them hope and essentials before they had to endure the cold winter. A group of us were able to pass out clothing, bedding, and toys to those who waited. I also helped serve holiday meals to people, which included turkey, macaroni, and pumpkin pie. It was rewarding to see everyone eating nice meals while a band played holiday music in the background. For a moment, everyone could forget their situations and enjoy the presence of others. At times, it was overwhelming because we were helping hundreds of people, but in the end I enjoyed it all. I learned the most from this event because I saw parents that were trying to provide for their infants and people who had homes but could not pay for their basic utilities, all desperately waiting in line to receive clothing and bedding. This gave me a new definition of what homeless means.…

Our escorts, Fahad and Arpit, were so welcoming that we actually forgot that we had met for the first time. It was Saturday morning and everyone was so excited about the outreach activity. As we gathered, everybody went to their selected jeepneys as we go to our destination. I was very excited as I stepped down the jeep with all the things that we needed for the activity. We need to cross at the bridge for us to go to loob, Gainza . I was very afraid as I stepped on the bridge. It feels like I’m going to fall into the water, but I still try to overcome my fear. As we go by, there are tricycle that’s waiting for us. I saw children who are taking a bath, maybe because there are too excited about the activities at the same time for the feeding program. Finally, we already arrived at our destination. I’m so overwhelmed because the people there are so generous. They help us carry out those things that we bought for the activities. We went to our place to prepare the food for the children. I saw several children sitting on the branches. I feel pity on them because they are too thin; in short some of them are malnourished. Our tribe prepared the ingredients for macaroni soup. Some of us chopped all the ingredients that need to be cut and some of us prepared the material to be used in cooking. It’s kind an awkward because don’t know where to start and how to approach them, but I still try my best. As I look for the other tribes to take some pictures, there are a lot of children almost a hundred pluses and above and I was shocked. I take pictures of them, I feel so happy every time I saw children who are smiling. There are very kind because they keep on participating and listening to their kuya’s and ate’s. I really love kids, so I also help the tutorial committee. I teach them on how to read and write, and there I realized that some of them don’t really know how to write and read. It’s not that easy to manipulate or control those kids for some of them are 5 years old below. Some are naughty and some of them are like they are just out of this world. I also saw those parents whose…

The first thing we did in our community was to identify the problems in our area. Then, we prioritized and ranked them. The highest is sanitation family planning so we focused our heath teaching on those two. Majority of the families we interviewed have three to five children without proper birth spacing. Based on our survey, we came to realized that most of them are not aware of the different family planning methods. We did a research on the different contraceptives and made leaflets that shows them the different methods. For sanitation we bought broomsticks, sacks and rugs. We also bought groceries for prizes. We also prepare sandwich and juice for them. We coordinate with the officials in the barangay hall for the sound system, chairs and for the security of everybody including us. We went to the association president and ask her help for the invitation and we gave out some invitations to the families in our community including the families we didn’t interviewed.…
