Personal Narrative-The Joys Of Texting And Driving
I'm here to talk to you kids about texting while driving. I know, I know you have heard this speech a million times before, but I hope that this time you will really listen and learn from my mistakes before it's to late. I was really just a normal teenager. Seventeen. Doing pretty well in school. Had a great group of friends. I had a really great life going for me. My parents always told me to never text while driving and of course I went to all these school assemblies where people came and lectured us about it. But I was stubborn and independent. I thought that nothing bad could ever happen to me. I mean maybe somebody else, but not me right?
October 18th 2003... It was just a normal Saturday night, my friends and I were going to a party, and I had just picked up my best friend Carrie, and her boyfriend Jake. I was driving down the highway to pick up one more friend, Melody, and then we would all go to the party. My phone buzzed. I just grabbed my phone to see who it was, and then all the sudden Carrie was screaming. I looked up, but I couldn't swerve out of the way of the semi truck in time.
I remember waking up in the hospital. There were so many beeping noises and tubes and wires. I just remember being so scared. I

I mean here I am, sitting in a wheelchair. Paralyzed. It took me 3 years to regain most of my memory. I still can't remember everything about my life before the crash. Don't make the same mistakes I did. You may think it's cool now to be rebellious and independent, but it's not so cool when you can't remember your what your parents look like. You might be thinking right now that this could never happen to you. I thought the same thing. Did you know that over 1,600,000 accidents are caused, each year, because of people texting while driving? I hope that you will all take a few minutes to think over what I've been talking about. Thank you all for taking the time to listen to my

I know not to take any life-threatening risks. I understand how dangerous texting and driving is. According to Strayer, a researcher who studied distracted driver for 15 years, “a crash risk that is eight times greater than someone giving the road their undivided attention” (Strayer, “The Science behind Distracted Driving”, pg 139). Obviously, no one wants to increase their crash risky why 800%. In another source, Just/Keller said, “deterioration in driving performance that occurs when one is also processing language [such as texting]” (Just/Keller, “How the Brain Reacts”, pg 147). Additionally, I recognize how texting and driving can devastate families. In the film, “From One Second to the Next”, one of the victim’s sibling talks about how terribly the accident affected her family, “It’s heartbreaking to see my sister like this”(Elizabeth, Debbie’s sister, Herzog August 2013). I know that I’m not always responsible or cautious, but I will always be sensible and attentive when it comes to texting and driving. Because you know I would never want to hurt our family or break the hearts of anyone I love and care about, you also know that I would never text and drive. I would never ruin a family’s happiness or cause anyone pain. I would never hurt a family, I promise you this. I am also very careful when it comes to making meaningful decisions. I am mindful of what I spend my money on. I only buy what I need such as school supplies or medicine. As you also know, I am currently saving up for college. As for my health, I am in very healthful shape and I rarely get sick or injuries. I don’t do damaging drugs that negatively affect my health. I also exercise daily so I don’t run out of breath while walking up the stairs. On top of exercising, I eat my recommended amount of fruits and vegetables and never eat too much sugar than advised. Along with health and finances, I am cautious and responsible when it comes to my…

The number of people who have been affected by texting and driving is dramatically increasing. Clearly the laws, punishments, and education up to this point have not done much to change how people view texting and driving. Due to the facts that have been revealed about texting and driving, it is imperative that the government takes strong action to fight this rising epidemic. Although it may be near impossible to keep people off their phones, it is vital that stricter laws are put against it. Law enforcement, including police and the judicial system must put their foot down and stand by it. All ages must be targeted as well. Even though older people may think they are more experienced behind the wheel, accidents can happen and they should not be able to use their phones either. It should also no longer be a question whether it is a safe time to pick up the phone and send a quick text. The punishments must be toughened, forcing people to face harder consequences if caught texting while driving behind the wheel. License suspension would be a strong preventive in order for people to keep both hands on the wheel. On top of the new laws that should be put against texting while driving, drawing attention and focus to people who have suffered tragedies from texting and driving could be a key part to prevent more from happening. Making sure people are fully educated, enforcing stronger laws, and following through with stricter punishments are the first things that need to be done in order to keep people off their phones. Do you want the last thing you see before flying off the road to be “What r u doing? LOL”? There is nothing so important in a text message that cannot wait until later. Do not let any more young individuals lives be taken from texting and driving. Do something about…
