Personal Narrative-Intellectual Analysis
“Attention all passengers, Flight JJ8094 to Miami, Florida is preparing for boarding. Please have your passes ready.” As I navigated through the congested São Paulo International Airport, a potluck of feelings took over me. Although wary of the perils that come with leaving home, it was a surprise that my lifelong, haunting feeling of failure had vanished. I was taking my first step towards a better life for my family.

While waiting to board the plane, my mind spiraled into introspections of my past. Despite having two college acceptances in Brazil, I could not attend either. One was too expensive and the other demanded full-time commitment. However, I had decided that I would improve my English and get a job back home to pay for college and

Unfortunately, my new host parents ostracized me because of my Hispanic origin, whereas they celebrated the other Au Pair with a French heritage. I chose to ignore this to focus on my primary goal and registered for English as a Second Language course at Colorado Mountain College. Here, I met a phenomenal person in my Speaking and Listening instructor. Her classes helped me improve my English, while her compassion made me value my efforts in class. Within a few weeks, my command over English improved exponentially. I actively participated in class discussions and helped my peers with their assignments. However, the circumstances at home were unchanged. Although the children loved me, the host parents disregarded my efforts and passed snide …show more content…
Encouragement from my instructors and my desire to study led me to enroll in college-level English courses, but I needed a nearly perfect score on the Accuplacer test. Thinking of home and the struggles that brought me here, I began preparing early for the test. Every night after work, I spent my time working on practice problems. Concurrently, I enrolled in advanced English courses while skipping a few basic

In august 2009, I had my first international trip from South Korea to America; Tucson, Arizona. It was actually immigration. At that time, I only knew basic English and used it for survival; I knew only the minimum. I entered a private school, called Desert Christian High School, in my sophomore year. The school’s counselor put me in regular classes and as expected, I fell behind. Math class was fine because it didn’t require reading skills much. However, the rest of the five subjects out of six were problems.…

I had finally been given the opportunity to continue my higher education at an American institution. I knew that this was the chance I had been waiting for: the chance to study dentistry in a country where oral hygiene is incredibly important. However, there were several hurdles along the way I needed to overcome. Initially, I was completely unaware of how the American education system operated. My poor background in the English language made it even harder to overcome this obstacle. To add to this stress, my father was diagnosed with acute arthritis in his neck; a cervical spine fusion in C6 and C7 was pinching the nerve in his right arm, which was causing it to go numb. He wasn’t able to work and went through an extensive amount of painful physical therapy. The circumstances made it harder for me to focus on my dreams. Unfortunately, I had to work fulltime while I was still a fulltime student in college, which was detrimental to my grades. However, I worked even harder and by the time I was a junior in college, I was maintaining dean’s list as a full time student, while working…

In the beginning of the semester I was very scared and very nervous about this new step in my life, which is college; at the same time I just wanted to get it started, and then the time came by. I had bad times in my high school’s English class because since my first language is Spanish all I could do in my exams was pray to god .In my SAT and ACT I didn't get a pretty good grade in English, so I had to take this remedial class, But As a matter of fact I took this class as an advantage of getting into the “college essays life”.…

As the week went on, I did not grow any fonder of Spanish class. I was discouraged and ready to give up. While sitting in study hall one day, I sent my mom a desperate email, begging her to request that I be moved down to Spanish I. She agreed to contact the school. When I returned home, she relayed her conversation with the Dean of Studies to me; the Dean believed I was capable of remaining in the class, but she…

Three years ago, I came into a world full of dreams, but these dreams can take you down if you don’t pay good attention. I am the first born in my family. Before I came here, I was so afraid to come to a new country, which I didn’t know any thing about. I was somehow confused, and the biggest fear that I had was about adapting to a new culture. After some days of being at home, I was taken to school where I met so many student, teachers, and other nonteaching staff. Although I didn’t know anyone, all the people I met welcomed me, and I really appreciated the welcome. The school counselor called one of the students and told him to show me my classes. Then the boy took me to my new class, and when I entered, all eyes were on…

I could have easily succumbed into the clutches of despair, loneliness and laziness if I did not put enough effort into quickly learning the native language. Due to my hard work, I was able to enter a specialized middle and high school, both renowned in New York City. From an ELL student to a scholar who appreciates the intricacies of this beautiful language, I would go on to taking many vigorous, challenging English courses and electives. While it may not seem much to many, and not taken for granted, speaking English did not come firsthand for me, and only through hard work and tenacity that I could be proud of where I am at…

During the early years of my high school education, I have been faced with multiple challenges. The most difficult of these took place early June 2014, just after the conclusion of my ninth grade scholastic year. My mother was offered an appointment at an international organization in Washington DC, USA, because of this, my brother and I had to move with her to settle there. The move took place within a very short notice and to me, it felt like an adventure to the unknown. It was not like moving from one school to another, or one country to another. It was rather moving to a totally different continent and life environment. I will not deny the fact that I was overwhelmed by the many challenges I had to face and overcome during our move and…

I experienced the biggest change in my life when I was 10 years old which I believe turned my whole life around from a person prone to failure and disappointments to a person who exceeded personal goals. My family and I immigrated to America to have a better life and a better future. I have 2 sisters and 1 brother. Being the youngest of the four my parent’s didn’t expect anything less from me. My parent’s sacrifice extra long hours of work just so we can all attend the appropriate education to succeed in life. Unfortunately I was a failing student with not much of interest in school. The only reason why I attended school was to see my friends and play during our break time. In class I would get in trouble for talking much and not listening to lectures. I did not excel in Math, Literature or Science, but I love finishing first in Physical Education whatever the activity may have been. On the first of August 1997 my parent’s received an important envelope. The envelope consists of a letter stating that our sponsors from America had been approved to bring us to the states, I knew this letter would change my life forever.…

I enjoy this essay because it is great to read and I am able to relate to myself. My situation, however, is a bit different from the author's as I did not meet an intimidating teacher, but I had a trouble learning a new language. Learning how to speak a new language is be very easier said than done. In retrospect, I remember when I learned English to take an IELTS exam and it was quite confusing me. Until I started to have confidence in myself and studied more just like David Sedaris. After taking an Entrance University exam, I planned to continue studying in my country like most of my friends since the university I went to was the qualified one in my city. However, one day, I accidentally heard about a chance to study abroad and I had an idea, why not? I could try. I also…

My brother mentioned me to enroll in the Intensive English Language Program at University of New Orleans, that’s where he used to study. I agreed him and enrolled in this program. There was a placement test in the first day of school to choose the levels for students. I did a good job in my Grammar, listening, and reading, but bad in writing. It was my first time writing a paragraph or a sentence in English that day. I had placed in level three in writing and grammar, and level four in listening and reading.…
