The late great Maya Angelou once stated that “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends”. While her words indicate that our attitudes, cultures and values can define our differences she also suggest that we all embody a shared sense of humanity that we might come to understand through our interactions and acknowledgments of others around us. In the 21st century we have experienced an ever -increasing diverse population, the re-election of America’s first Black President, polarizing religion wars, and a more encompassing civil rights agenda that includes women’s and LGBTQ communities. So what if we asked ourselves “what does it mean to be diverse?” What are our investments in our diversity? What are our feelings and logical reasonings about diversity? More broadly, what does diversity mean for 21st century American culture? What role does contemporary social movements like Occupy Wall Street, #Blacklivesmatter and other protest movements play as we consider the meaning of diversity and difference? What is the role of the university in defining our discussions about diversity? Through critical reading, writing and thinking we will explore these questions in depth while engaging how diversity and difference shapes our attitudes about the economy, racial and ethnic difference, sexuality,…

When I started this class 9 weeks ago I did not know much about the different types of diversity that we have in the United States. Since then I have been able to learn about different people and how to better relate to them and their needs. Diversity is the relation that holds between two entities when and only when they are not identical. Since people can be identified by several different things it is important for you to know the different things that is considered part of their identity. I have personally always thought that individuals we mostly identified by their race, religion, and age, but I have learned that a person sexual preference also plays a big part today as how people see and group people together.…

From the beginning, Elie Wiesel's work details the threshold of his adult awareness of Judaism, its history, and its significance to the devout. His emotional response to stories of past persecution contributes to his faith, which he values as a belief system rich with tradition and unique in its philosophy. A divisive issue between young Elie and Chlomo is the study of supernatural lore, a subset of Judaic wisdom that lies outside the realm of Chlomo's pragmatism. To Chlomo, the good Jew attends services, prays, rears a family according to biblical dictates, celebrates religious festivals, and reaches out to the needy, whatever their faith.…

During this course I have learned about diversity, race, ethnicity, cultural differences, stereotyping and prejudice. Much of the textbook reading has enlightened me on the immense diversity in the United States and in the world at large. The decisions that I partook in during this course have allowed me to interact with many diverse people from various backgrounds which is much like the way the United States and society is in general work. I really never thought about diversity in the way that was taught in this course; people come from many backgrounds and have rich and full cultures who live right here in my own community. Now that I see these cultures in a different light due to this course I can enjoy them more and not feel like they are so different from me and when they are different I can embrace those differences.…

Standardized testing, every student should be familiar with it, but is it nonsense? Does it actually help schools and their students advance in academic competence, or does it hinder their ability by adding more anxiety and stress to students? Honors College Benefits

I have become fond of the liberal arts education The College of Charleston offers, which emphasizes exploration into all areas of academia. An example of this would be the honors history courses that interest me, as I enjoy learning beyond my focus of science, and into other areas that create an appreciation for society’s diversity. One of the many aspects of the Honors College I find engaging are the academic opportunities unique to the Honors College that allow students to develop in their major interests, but also diversify their knowledge in all areas, as the academic requirements extend from calculus to western civilization. The opportunities the Honors College extends to its students are what make it appealing to me, and my experience so far in college has led me to believe that I am the right fit for the Honors College, as it would help me develop as a person, and help me achieve my…

I am going to be completely honest when I signed up for this course I was just trying to fulfill a core requirement in order to graduate from Towson University. But from the first day I walked into the class and read the course objective I found that wasn’t going to be your typical class where you just node your head and wait for the time to pass as the professor lectures you on the class lesson. This course examines multicultural influences on education. Students will engage in the process of self-awareness and awareness of others. In addition students will explore approaches to…

Levine Sheen and David Stark “Diversity Makes You Brighter” In this century, not only America but to the world, college or higher education is a necessity to be successful. In high school one of the biggest decisions you must make is if you want to go college or not.
