Abstract
The Jawahar Nagar dump yard was started in 1987, when an area of over 700 acres of land was declared a dump yard. The Andhra Pradesh (AP) Government had permitted garbage generated in the erstwhile Alwal, Uppal and Malkajgiri municipality to be dumped here. Presently, the entire city’s garbage, about 4,000 Metric Tonnes, is being dumped daily in Jawahar Nagar for the past 7 years, after the closure of the yards in Autonagar and Adhibatla. The dump yard is presently being operated by the Ramky Group, which is in-charge of the waste management here since 2009. The wastes from all around the city is collected and dumped daily in the Jawahar Nagar dump yard. The wastes get accumulated and when around two-thirds of the dump yard is filled, the staff on site ignites a fire in a corner.
