In my setting every activity has to be planned: This means that I plan for the unexpected or unusual to happen. So my foremost plan is to be alert. Therefore, I am alert when planning an activity; making sure the location or setting of what I plan to do with the Children is the right environment for the activity for example if I was using bikes and scooters in the play area outside. Before allowing the children to play outside I would carry out a garden check, I would make sure sure the main gate to the setting was locked and that all other fences and gates were secure, I would clean away any rubbish/ animal feaces, I would also ensure that the equipment; i.e bikes and scooters are in safe and good working condition. During a garden check I check that the plants are not of a danger to anyone, for example, nettles. Once outside I would ensure the bikes and scooters are used in the proper manner and with plenty of space so in my setting we would not use them indoors as there is not enough space they would be used outside. I am aware that a varied environment supports Children and Young people’s learning and development, it gives them confidence to explore and learn in safe and secure yet challenging indoor or outdoor space. In my setting risk assessments are carried out for all activities and regular checks are carried out around the…

When you are planning for a healthy and safe indoor environment firstly you will need to make sure a room checks has been done and there is no hazard noticed in morning and to organise the room to make safety effectively, by ensuring there is enough space for the number of children to move around easily and be comfortable. There should be natural light with in the room to ensure the children work without being uncomfortable. If this is not possible that light sources should be used to help the children feel comfortable. The level of noises should be at a level so you don’t need to shout and the person you are communicating with can hear you. You need to take into account the needs of anyone with a disability such as physical disability, sensory impairment you will need to set out activities to suit their needs as well. All activities should be set up safety so there is not a hazard.…

When planning health and safety for indoor and outdoor environments you need to know the age group and ability of each child you are planning for. For example if you are planning for children who are completely mobile the layout of the room/ outside space must be different to those who have just learnt to walk or are not mobile at all. In our setting we have separate rooms for ages 0-1 and 1-2, I believe this is better than having a 0-2 room for the simple reason when a child reaches 1 they begin to be mobile, therefore have separate needs and room space then with a younger baby where bigger apparatus may not be suitable. Other factors that must be taken into account are children with special requirements that may have an impairment such as limited sight or hearing, there must be regulations put into place so these children are just as aware of the safety risks around them, taking into account the space, light and noise surrounding the specific activity. You must also know what the desired outcome of the activity you are planning is, according to Tassoni et al (2010:136), “Most activities with children and young people should have clear aims and objectives that are based around the required outcome linked to their age”. The key to planning is organisation and knowing the children you are planning for. Remember that each child is an individual and needs an individual care plan. It all comes down to your own responsibility and duty of care, avoiding negligence which would lead to harm in other people, in this case, making sure you check every aspect of planning for environments and that they are safe for the children they will entertain.…

You must make sure that the environment is free of hazards and children can work safely. Everyone should be able to access materials and equipment without their being any risk involved. There should be enough lighting for the children to work comfortably and you should check that any artificial lighting isn’t too harsh and may cause headaches. You should also check that the noise surrounding the room is an acceptable level at all times.…
