CYP3.4: Support children and young people’s health and safety.

Lo1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services.

When planning healthily and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services there are many factors that need to be taken in to consideration. Most importantly, every child has the right to feel safe and free from harm.

A varied learning environment is essential to give a child the best opportunity to learn and develop. Therefore a learning environment can be any area, inside or out. Therefore it is my prime responsibility to ensure these environments are safe, hygienic and comfortable. This may change depending on the age and ability of the child and obviously adapted to suit a child with disabilities when needed.

Factors to take in to consideration are:
Weather
Temperature
Appropriate clothing
Equipment needed
Security
Cleanliness of equipment
Adequate light and heat
Age appropriate
Access
Childs ability
Childs interests and dislikes
Adequate hygiene facilities
Sleep and feed times and facilities to do both

LO1.2. Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely.

Everyday my home is risk assessed first thing in the morning before mindee’s arrive, this is a mental sweep of the property to address risk and prevent them before mindee's attend. I walk through all the rooms and identify possible risks, and eliminate where possible, isolate if not possible. I also do write risk assessments of all areas one a month, these include regular play areas. (Ie, parks, playgroups, library ect) aswell as my home and garden. I also carry out extra risk assessments when my ratios change or the hours I work differ, for instance school holidays to ensure I meet the needs of the children. I do not have anyone who works with me, however if I did,

    At birth surprisingly a child has intellectually learned to do things already such as smell their mother and recognise her voice. They have also learnt that when they cry it lets people know that they need help and within the first few days of life they learn to use their senses particularly touch, taste and sound. At infancy a child is expected to weigh around 3.5kg or 7 1/2lbs and 50cm long. Bonding is very important socially and emotionally for both mother and baby, helps relationship in later life because they become closer. The babies reflexes are now improving, some of them are automatic responses. E.g. sucking a nipple or a bottle. Grasp reflex is when a baby automatically grasps a finger if it is placed in their hand and also a startle reflex which is when a baby will hear a noise and clench their fists and move their head towards the noise. Walking and standing reflex is when baby is held upright and automatically make stepping movements following this is the moro reflex which is known as the falling reflex which is when a baby falls they know that they should grip something in front of them before falling or putting their hands down onto the floor to save their fall. Babies at one month physically their reflexes have now become much stronger and are starting to progress onto different reflexes. Intellectually and socially the baby will learn a familiar voice, this sometimes stops them from crying because they know that someone they know is around them and enjoy being around that person. Emotionally the baby will stop crying when they are picked up but cry when they are put down. Start to relax when they are put into the bath or put to lie down for a nappy change. A baby at three months will now physically lift and turn its head to a stimulus in the room around them and will be interested in playing with their finger or other body parts.     Our pre-school room is one large room in a general childcare facility, located at the rear of the building adjacent to the after-school room, and opens out onto the outdoor play area. The development of a learning environment which supports children‘s learning, socialization, interests and needs, is one of the foundation stones to quality early years curriculum and service. According to Aistear, taking time to develop a good indoor and outdoor learning environment will assist in the development of your curriculum and provide a welcoming and supportive learning atmosphere for the children. There are two roles for the adult in preparing this environment: organising it and resourcing it. In a pre-school room the space should be divided into interest areas i.e. child-sized areas rather than in a single large group space. The supervisor should create well-defined areas of interest that encourage a variety of types of play and helps children see and experience the choices on offer. As you enter our room, the room the sinks and wash up area are to the left, as are the toilets. To the right is the table top area and arts & crafts corner. To the rear of the room, the book and reading corner is on the left hand side adjacent to the construction area, the dress up stand is along the back wall, and the home corner is a separate area on the right hand side.
