campus life
To Campus (magbiya gana yitekakelal) The following day is the beginning of my adult hood life or at least that is the way I look at it. It was the day I and thousands of students were going to join the Addis Ababa University. It was a very special day for me finally I was on my own no dad or mum behind my back to tell me what to do or how to act. That night was just dreaming about the as the darkness started to be overtaken by the beautiful morning sun, I was just lying in my bed listening to the birds singing and imaging what’s going to happen.
Suddenly the alarm clock rang it was time to get up and get up and ready for the big day. I had a shower and I sat for breakfast. Within about two minutes the plate was empty. I had no idea where it went. Did I eat it all in such a short time or someone has taken it. This was the question in my mind for few seconds. I could not waste my time any longer thinking about my breakfast, I have got a lot to do. I said goodbye to my family and went out to the street heading to get taxi.
While I was imagining about campus, I missed taxi. And then I woke up from my imaginary world and got on taxi to Mexico. When I arrived there to get to 6-killo, Mexico was not like I have known it before. It looks as if the Great Rift Valley has tarred our capital apart or as if there had been a landslide and it divided the city in two. Then I realized it must be the railway project. Suddenly I was in panic again I could not find any taxi to 6-killo. I saw a short guy wearing a helmet standing close. As I get closer to ask him where I could find the taxi I realized he was Chinese. I went back looking for another person that I could ask. I saw an Old women coming toward me and asked her, she pointed me in certain direction. Although I could see where she pointed me I could not figure out how to get there. I wished I could fly. Whenever I thought I got the way it was a dead end. After trying a lot finally I got to the taxi to 6-killo. But

Today is perhaps one of the most important days of my life. It is the day I take my placement exam that determines which major you will be put into at the higher learning institution. Shakily I finish getting dressed for the day, I am adorned in a pair of navy pants and a grey button up with the number 84 on the cuff. Each year the society gives a number to every child born. I was the 84th child of the year so that is the number I was assigned, many of my other classmates have number ranging from 20 to over 200. I slip out of my room and jog to the end of my hall barely catching the last lift to the 97th floor where the test is administered. Not everyone gets invited to secondary school, for 75% of the world primary is the end, they didn’t pass, and would be taught trade jobs with little opportunity for advancement. Due to this pressure of the test looms over me and the memory of leaving my mother and family take over my mind almost daily.…

It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

I then left my hotel room and started to explore the hotel. I was on the top floor of the hotel so I took an elevator down to the lobby area. When I was walking around the only sound of life I saw was these guys talking to each other, but I couldn’t understand a word they said. So I left to go check their outdoor swimming pool. I knew something was going to go wrong at the swimming pool and I was right.…

I sat bolt upright in bed and whipped around to look at the clock. Four thirty AM. I scanned my room. I was glad to observe that it was my room. Yes, the regular blue walls and dirty clothes strewn across the floor. I spit a piece of blond hair, to my relief, out of my mouth. What had just happened? Whatever it was, I decided, happened for a reason. Whether I decided to dismiss it as a dream was up to me. Later that morning, I fixed myself some bread and jam and a cup of coffee, which I found I had acquired a taste for. On the way out the door for school, I gave my mom a peck on the cheek.…

As I got closer, I realized that it was my cousin with large ears and chubby cheeks who came to pick me up in his black, with red strips car. During the car drive, I saw how clean and beautiful the roads were. I also saw that all the people walking on the street had different way of dressing with a hat on their head, long t-shits and baggy shorts. As we drove through my cousin’s neighborhood I saw that most of the house looks the same with v-shaped roofs. My cousin pulled into the driveway and carried all the heavy black bags in to the house through the tall and wide front door. As I entered into the house I saw how beautiful and different the house was. The house was way different than the house we had in India, the houses here were made of wood with carpet all over the house and a v-shaped roof while the houses in India were made of grey cement and bricks while cold and slippery tiles all over the house and with a flat roof. After eating delicious, home-cooked, Indian meal we all went to bed. The next morning, we went to the High School that I was going to be enrolled into and was starting in December.…

College is a big transition from High School. College is there to teach students knowledge, and to prepare every college student for the next chapter of their lives. Most freshman that go to Western Michigan University (WMU), decide to live in the valleys. “Valley residence halls feature suites where two student rooms share a connecting bathroom. These large, coed halls have a picturesque peaceful setting and are close to the Haworth College of Business, Intramural Fields and Goldsworth Valley pond” (“Residence Halls”). There are a total of three valleys that are about a twenty minute walk from main campus. There have been many problems with the dorms such as the noise, the size of the rooms, hygiene, the water, and the resident assistants.…

College is like an unopened book with no title; you haven’t the slightest clue as to what’s to come, but you know you’re going to learn something new. I remember stepping into my first college class. I was filled with terror not knowing whom to expect in my class. As I walked in and looked around, I saw about twenty other people scattered about the room staring directly at me. I tried not to make eye contact with anybody, so I walked straight to an empty desk in the back and sat down. About twenty-five minutes after the professor began his lesson I had become drowsy and about to fall asleep. I tried to stay up but couldn’t resist. I awoke thirty minutes later to the ringing of the dismissal bell. The class was over, and I had felt horrible knowing nothing about what the class just learned. College can be a pretty tough place to get through, so know how to survive.…

I will talk about something about my university life and how they shape my view of the diverse worlds. I was born in a small town which is created for a big chemical factory. Nearly all of our parents are work for the factory. The life there is simple and kind. The only thing we care about is to get better grades. At that time I think the world is so simple. Go to school then work like my parents in the factory. Married with a people who also in the same small town. Retire from my work like my grandpa and then sleep under the earth for a long time. But after enroll my first university which is in a big city everything changed. I found that the people there are worried about the future. They would like to make friend for the future work or earn money but not just for making friends. Some people do not study in the university but just make it like a society place. The people who live in that city are all different and have their own ideas. They all looks like so busy and to learn a lot of other things. Most of them want to talk about something like how well the others or how bad they does. Someone just think about themselves and care nothing else. I cannot tell how much I change the view of the world but from that I never think the world is simple like before. One year later I choose to study aboard and go to the city Ames here. I find different countries have different cultures and living styles. They know what they really want and enjoy. They know better of how to balance the life and what is the most important things in their lives. And a thing which comes to my mind first time is the race. Racial discrimination is the tings which all the people are sensitive about. And that make all the people think about the race. That is the thing which I never think before. And there are a lot of countries come to my mind. And all of those things in my mind separate the world into a lot of pieces. And I have never felt so confuse like…

The alarm loudly buzzed off at exactly 5:00 in the morning. Though my head ached because of lack of sleep from the previous night, my feet searches where my bedroom slippers are. Finding them, I quickly arrange the bedcover and folded my blanket. Eyes half-open, I slowly made my way to the kitchen and filled the kettle. While waiting for the water to boil, I prepared two cups with coffee, sugar and creamer: one for me, the other for my father who is already physically incapacitated because of the head trauma he suffered from a vehicular accident some three years ago. Coffee prepared, I went to my parents’ bedroom and called them up. Slowly and unsteadily, my mother helped my father to get up. We had coffee together while engaging in our usual morning conversation. Thirty minutes later, I am pulling out from the cabinet my sangria red uniform. Done with dressing up, I made my way out of my bedroom and bid goodbye. I went out of the house and started my journey to where I worked. On the way there, things played on my mind: is the allowance I gave to my brother who is enrolled in a state university as a freshman enough for his meals and other miscellaneous expenses, mother has to go to the doctor for a check up, father is not eating well, electric bill is coming, the fridge is almost empty but for the bottles of water and medicines, payday is nowhere near. All these played in my mind, unmindful of the traffic and the number of pupils, employees, teachers all in a hurry to reach where they are headed.…
