College Campus
Assignment-5
Designing a Campus Network
Total Points: 20
In this assignment we are going to design a campus network. Delta Community College (DCC) is a small college. It is attended by 600 full and part time students. The students do not live on campus. There are three dormitories for the students and each dorm can accommodate 400 students.
Distance from the college campus to the dorms are:

Dorm1 <---> College Campus = 22KM
Dorm2 <---> College Campus = 5KM
Dorm3 <---> College Campus = 15KM

Numbers of students are expected to be doubled every 4 years. There are 4 departments:

Arts and Humanities
Business
Social Sciences
Mathematics

Every department has an average of 150 Students and an average of 10 professors each. There are approximately 20 Administrative personnel available. It is expected that everyone in the college should get access to the network. Students when they are in the dormitory should also get access to the college network. We need to design a computer network so that it is good for next 4 years. Now do the following:
A. Every department and dormitory should be put on their own subnet. When you design the subnetting make sure your design support the following: 10 Points
i.
3 subnets for 3 dorms each should support 400 hosts ii. Different subnets for 4 departments
• Students and professors should be in different subnets. There are 300 students and
10 professors per department iii. A subnet for administrative department which should support at least 30 hosts
The assigned IP address is 10.5.3.0/20. So do you think using this IP address we can design all the necessary subnets with at least the required numbers of hosts? If yes then design the subnet structure by showing the assigned IP address range for every subnet. If no then say why.

B. Apply a hierarchical approach to design this network. Your design should include:7 Points
i.
Core Layer ii. Distribution Layer iii. Access Layer
In the designed network you need to mention what

    A simple design you can consider is 1 floor with a single data closet serving 150 users. You need a core network, networks for your firewall, DMZ, remote VPN clients, switch MGMT network, server network, voice network, wireless network and networks for other services you have not yet identified, like security, cameras, fire, door and video. You should have multiple domain servers and DHCP servers. While you can get away with using high end switches for DHCP, a couple windows servers will do the trick and give more insight when you are troubleshooting. Most systems can get along with DHCP, so that is fine, (some older systems still need host files) but there are support benefits to statically assigned addresses. In any case, you will want reserved space in these networks for your network devices, in exception to VLANs, redundant or clustered systems. For design, you could use the 10.1.0.0 address space using /21 (10.1.0.1 - 10.1.7.254) and for your subnet masking on the devices will naturally be 255.255.255. Reserve the first and last 20 or so addresses in each DHCP scope for statically assigned addresses and network devices / gateway addresses. Some examples would be, 10.1.0.0/24 for servers-all static, 10.1.1.0/24 for pc's printers usable for DHCP 10.1.1.21 - 10.1.1.230, 10.1.2.0/24 for wireless usable for DHCP 10.1.2.21-10.1.2.230, 10.1.3.0/24 for VoIP usable for DHCP 10.1.3.21 - 10.1.3.230 and 10.1.4.0 - 10.1.7.254 for future use. While you can cut back each network to a /25 giving 126 hosts per network, you may find yourself changing this sooner than expected.…

    Write a paragraph (a minimum of five college-level sentences) below that summarizes what was accomplished in this lab, what you learned by performing it, how it relates to this week’s TCOs and other course material, and just as importantly, how you feel it will benefit you in your academic and professional career. (8 points)In this lab the router baseline configuration was erased to begin configuration on a router from scratch. In the lab we chose to enter a basic management setup on the router to place an IP address on one interface, and set an initial configuration dialog for ease of use. A secret and enabled password was created to provide security that avoids others from make configuration changes without the password. A virtual terminal password was also created for authorized users to access switches remotely. In the subnet…

    II. Central University Suppose you are the network manager for Central University, a medium-size university with 13,000 students. The university has 10 separate colleges (e.g., business, arts, journalism), 3 of which are relatively large (300 faculty and staff members, 2,000 students, and 3 buildings) and 7 of which are relatively small (200 faculty and staff, 1,000 students, and 1 building). In addition, there are another 2,000 staff members who work in various administration departments (e.g., library, maintenance, finance) spread over another 10 buildings. There are 4 residence halls that house a total of 2,000 students. Suppose the university has the 128.100.xxx.xxx address range on the Internet. How would you assign the IP addresses to the various subnets? How would you control the process by which IP addresses are assigned to individual computers? You will have to make some assumptions to answer both questions, so be sure to state your assumptions. The best way to address the following issue is to first identify the network requirement for Central University. The establishment of the solution must consider the various buildings, and departments as well as future growth expectation. When establishing a large network between buildings and departments, it is essential for the network manager to identify what parts of the network are available, requiring upgrades, and or facilitates space for additional equipments. The first assumption is that every building has sufficient routers, switches, and network fabric to handle the traffic on this scale. Acquiring subnets for privacy to keep frivolous student traffic off their subnets along with maintaining the faculty and staff on separate subnets for privacy. These subnet breakdowns will not be sufficient enough. Using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol servers to assign individual IPs and alleviate the issue of having to assign static IPs to people will be the right choice for securing, and facilitating the…
