This is just one example of poetry to use in a unit. I thought a very interesting poem that Tompkins (2013) notes in the textbook that would also accommodate ELLs was a bilingual poem (p. 326). By having the students do this type of poem, the ELLs would feel more comfortable being able to use, and even share with others, their home languages and the other students could use this as an opportunity to research certain words and expand their vocabulary. I also liked how J. Cannon (2013) used a Who Am I poem (Livetext posting). I think these types of poems not only get students involved in poetry, they also get the students to think at a higher level. The types of who am I questions are…

Activity 1B: The students will be provided with a list of vocabulary words. They will be required to put each word on a separate 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 card. The students will also need to look up the definition of the word in the back of the textbook. Using the definition, they will restate it in their own words and use it in a sentence on the notecard as well. Each notecard will be put in their 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 box. This box is used so they can look up words while reading the text if they need to review what the word means. To do this easily, they will be required to have all words alphabetical in their box.…

P’s classroom are a small group writing center, a vocabulary finder center, and art center. At the writing center, the student has to write a short fun sentence correctly using the vocabulary word. For the vocabulary finder center, the student is provided with five to ten words and definitions. The student is to match the words to their correct definition. The art center consists of the student putting the word into action using visualizing; a strategy Maureen Mc Laughlin mentions in the book Reading Content Area Reading: Teaching and Learning for College and Career Readiness. This process occurs when the student draws a picture demonstrating the word in motion (pg. 82). At the end of the week, Mrs. P takes all three parts and makes a study book for the student to use as a reference.…

The students get the initial input from the lecture, which is kept short to ensure they don’t lose concentration. It is during this lecture that the learning outcomes are stated, what form the assessment will take and what standard is required to pass. Then practical demonstration by the teacher gives the students another opportunity to take in information, then the group is divided into smaller groups where they can practice the skills they have learnt to build confidence. The teacher then can move amongst the groups offering encouragement, positive…

It was obvious that Ms. Brown had created a plan for this lesson by observing the progression of the skills that were being taught and that they were presented in a logical order that aided student comprehension. Both the students and the teacher were familiar with the skills and the delivery. She also posts lesson plans online. Objectives and expectations of the lesson were communicated to the students on a special place on the board, at the front of the class with essential questions and " I can" statements. Ms. Brown was able to gain the students' attention for the lesson with a hook type activity. It was an engaging question for the student to answer that was related to the topic. Students worked independently, in pairs and in groups and read a selection either by themselves or with another student. The material was then presented in a graphic organizer by the teacher with illustrations and relevant examples provided by the students. They also read the selection (either our loud to a partner or to themselves) and then the material was displayed in the form of a graphic organizer for the visual learners. Ms. Brown used PowerPoint to present the material.…

    2. Who is the speaker in the poem? How would you describe this persona? Ms. Laux has worked as a sanatorium cook, a gas station manager, a maid, and a donut holer before receiving a B.A. in English from Mills College in 1988; therefore, I think she used her own life experience to write this poem (Dorianne). In an online posting, Dorianne Laux explains, “’Every poem I write, I write for myself, to relieve some pressure, to try to get something right. I want the viewer, or reader, to see what I’ve seen, to know it the way I’ve known it…’” (Guest).…
