As the day goes by the students are embracing the class routines and procedures more and more. Later in the day, during reading we continue reading the Magic Treehouse book, Dinosaurs Before Dark. After reading two chapters, we discuss as a class what has happened so far in the book and what could possibly happen next. Then the students worked on their interactive reading notebooks and cut out the handouts we passed out and glued them in their notebooks. Once the students finished, they were allowed to read and, or work in their interactive notebook.…

Reading Task: Students will silently read the passage in question on a given day—first independently and then following along with the text as the teacher and/or skillful students read aloud. Depending on the difficulties of a given text and the teacher’s knowledge of the fluency abilities of students, the order of the student silent read and the teacher reading aloud with students following might be reversed. What is important is to allow all students to interact with challenging text on their own as frequently and independently as possible. Students will then reread specific passages in response to a set of concise, text- dependent questions that compel them to examine the meaning and structure of Pollan’s reporting. Therefore, rereading is deliberately built into the instructional unit.…

On Scout’s first day of school her teacher, Miss Caroline Fisher, wasn’t too pleased with the fact that Scout could read. Scout narrates, “...and after making me read most of My First Reader and the stock-market quotations from The Mobile Register aloud, she discovered that I was literate and looked at me with more than faint distaste. Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me anymore, it would interfere with my reading.” Miss Caroline doesn’t like Scout knowing how to read already because she says, “It’s best to begin reading with a fresh mind.” She thinks Scout has been taught the wrong way because it wasn’t following the school’s way. Miss Caroline later catches Scout writing a letter to Dill. She told her, again, to tell her father to stop teaching her, Miss Caroline says, “We don’t write in the first grade, we print. You won’t learn to write until you’re in the third grade.” Scout blames Calpurnia for this because writing kept her…

Everybody at the school is expected to perform from day one where there will be no mercy. That’s the way it works. It is as David described with figurative words “It´s everybody into the language pool, sink or swim”. It is a rapid way for the teacher to see how the students perform. The class begins and the teacher walks in. From now on the teacher is judging every move and every mistake. You get the impression that this teacher is tough and also a little bit evil. The teacher asks the students one by one which things they like and which they dislike. A student called Anna is asked and answers that she hates mosquitos. The teacher is quick and respond with sarcasm “Oh really, how interesting. I thought that everyone loved the mosquito….” This illustrates pretty much how the teacher’s personality is. She isn’t a sweetheart who thinks the students need some good care and help because they are unsecure in the…

There were multiple students who wrote something like, “Third grade is fun when Mrs. Neal is here,” or “Third grade is fun because Mrs. Neal is my teacher.” Students could raise their hands and tell their classmates their sentence. If they had something wrote about Mrs. Neal she gave them a sticker. She later told me the week before, one person did it so she gave them a sticker and that week about 15 students wrote something nice about Mrs. Neal in their sentence.…
