Chapter 11
In discussion eleven, we were instructed to describe a way to fit poetry in a unit. We were told to name the kind of poetry it was and how we would formatively and summatively assess it. I chose to do my writing across the curriculum unit on oceans. I incorporated poetry into one of my lessons. I had students write an acrostic poem. I first modeled the poem using the spelling for fish. I wrote a sentence about fish for each letter of the word. After I model the acrostic poem, as independent practice, the students will create their own acrostic poem using the word ocean. As a formative assessment, I will confer with the students as I walk around the room. I will provide positive feedback to those who are on task and doing the assignment as instructed. For those that are not on task or not completing the assignment as instructed, I will have a mini-conference with them to determine what questions they still have about the acrostic poem. For a summative assessment, I have a rubric that I will follow to assess the poem. In order to get “Exceed” on all parts, the students must have created an acrostic poem with complete sentences, stayed on topic by using O-C-E-A-N, used complete sentences, had less than 3 spelling errors, and had correct capitalization and punctuation. This is just one example of poetry to use in a unit. I thought a very interesting poem that Tompkins (2013) notes in the textbook that would also accommodate ELLs was a bilingual poem (p. 326). By having the students do this type of poem, the ELLs would feel more comfortable being able to use, and even share with others, their home languages and the other students could use this as an opportunity to research certain words and expand their vocabulary. I also liked how J. Cannon (2013) used a Who Am I poem (Livetext posting). I think these types of poems not only get students involved in poetry, they also get the students to think at a higher level. The types of who am I questions are

Nurses are one of the biggest demands that I know of in this day and age. For the many people who go through the emergency rooms, in and out patients, regular check-ups or have to be in an environment of anointment, there must be nurses. Aside from the job that the doctors do, nurses cover some of the other procedures that should be performed in the medical field. Nurses, nurses assistants, physicians, pharmacist, and even midwives all play a role in the process of healing a sick person. They are certified in care taking whereas a doctor may not simply have a close relationship with you but will diagnose the illness. Nurses main purpose is to make the patient feel as comfortable as they possibly can. Eliot Friedson claims that these occupations such as nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, physical therapist and etc. reflect four characteristics that speak on the miniscule view on their positions in the practice of medicine.…

This chapter discusses the political and economic aspects that have taken both Canada and the US in different paths which is ultimately shaped by the organization and delivery of care with its recent restructuring efforts. The US health care system is a system of private health insurance where most of the population gets benefits through employment or other benefit plans such as those for veterans. There is public health insurance for those on social security called Medicare and those that require social assistance called Medicaid. But, 45 million people are still uninsured and millions are underinsured. Unlike the US, Canada has a universal system of public health insurance where contracts with private non-profit health care institutions such as hospitals and health practitioners deliver care. The national health insurance represents a sense of clarity between “free market” liberalism and the “planned economy” socialism. Public financing is considered the optimal form of health care financing due to the fact that insurance is affordable to all citizens no matter how ill, effective cost control over health care services, and there’s universal coverage. With such a system, those that are healthy that do not need many treatments support those that require health care service which ultimately offer good cost control and good equity. Canada and the US have different perspectives in access to their pharmaceuticals. Canada has a public health insurance where people over the age of 65 and those on social assistance are covered. Unlike Quebec that has a drug benefit program for everyone, Ontario has created programs to those that have a large amount of drug costs and the rest of the population has access through private insurance through employment. This causes issues with those that are in low paying or have part-time jobs. Pharmaceuticals here in Canada are regulated by the Patented Medicines…

The public view on business ethics has never been high. Many citizens see business ethics as essentially a contradiction in terms, an oxymoron, and think that there is only a fine line between a business executive and a crook. Public opinion may be reported at 2 levels. At a broad level is the general perception of business ethics by the public and at a narrower level are specific perceptions as to what is going on inside the organization. There is no doubt that the media are reporting ethical problems more frequently and fervently. 60 minutes, 20/20, etc. are keeping business ethics in the public eye and make it difficult to assess whether public opinion polls are reflecting the actual business ethics of the day or simply the reactions to the latest scandals covered on a weekly basis.…
