Chemical Equation
Three things are usually required for a chemical explosion: a chemical reaction that occurs very rapidly, a large increase in gas pressure, and a confined-reaction vessel in which the pressure of the gaseous products can increase to a point that the gases break violently out of the container. In this chemistry and physics science fair project, you will use the combustion of ethanol to provide energy for a small explosion. The chemical equation that describes the combustion of ethanol is shown below. (Note: Hover over the equations in this Introduction with your cursor to view enlarged formulas.)

Equation 1:

C2H6O+3O2→3H2O+2CO2+heat
Ethanol: C2H6O
Oxygen: 3O2
Water: H2O
Carbon dioxide: CO2
The chemical equation states that ethanol (C2H6O)

The key point about this equation, for the purposes of this science fair project, is that it clearly shows the mathematical relationship between pressure, amount of gas, and temperature. The pressure, P, is directly proportional to n, and T. If you double P in the equation, keeping V, n, and R the same, then T will also double. The same goes for n and P. The equation is precise only for "ideal" gases in equilibrium with their surroundings, which is not the case in an explosion. But the ideal gas equation is a useful approximation of this real-world experiment.

A version of the experimental setup is shown in Figure 1. The apparatus consists of a piece of wood with the top of a film canister glued onto it. The metal ends of a grill spark igniter are passed through a hole in the wood and through the film canister top. The metal ends will deliver a spark when the red button is pushed. When you add a fuel to the film canister and attach it to the plastic top that is glued to the board, a spark will ignite the fuel and send the canister flying. The fuel used to launch the canister is Binaca breath spray (ethanol and isopropane). A tire pressure gauge is used to measure

Note from Equation 3 that you can determine launch velocity if you know the flight time. Time of flight is easy to measure; just use the stopwatch to time the interval from launch to landing. Once you have calculated the launch velocity, you can calculate the maximum height the canister flies using Equation 4. Remember that the equations are approximations and do not take into account the air resistance. You will use the trajectory equations to determine the launch velocity of the canister, its maximum height, and its kinetic and potential energy.

The kinetic energy of the canister gives you a minimum value for the chemical energy of the combustion reaction. It is a minimum value because energy is lost as heat, friction, and in other ways. As you work through the procedure, consider where the energy is flowing. The overall flow of energy when the canister is launched straight up follows this sequence:

Chemical energy: Energy released as heat causes an abrupt pressure rise in the canister.
Kinetic energy: The canister is launched upward.
Potential energy: This reaches a maximum at the maximum height. It returns to zero when the canister

The Ideal Gas Law equation is PV=nRT. “P” stands for pressure, “V” is for volume, “n” gives the number of moles, “R” is the gas constant and “T” is for temperature. The ideal gas constant value is 0.082057 (L x atm)÷(mol x K). The purpose of the experiment was to be able to measure the temperature and the mass of each gas tested, to configure a constant and determine which gas is the most “ideal”. To configure “R” the equation will be, R= PV ÷ nT.…

Next the starting temperature of the water has to be measured. After that the can of water has to be clamped around 5-10cm above the unlit alcohol burner. Then light the burner making sure that it is place immediately underneath the can. Throughout the experiment the water should be stirred using a metal stirrer so the water is evenly heated. When the water gets to around 15 degrees above the starting temperature of the water, put the cap back on the alcohol burner. Then weigh the alcohol burner again without the cap on to find out how much alcohol was used. After start the whole method again using different alcoholic…

The materials used were a burner, striker, 250 mL beaker, 100 mL graduated cylinder, glass stirring rod, thermometer, ring stand, ring, wire gauze, and beaker tongs. The bunsen burner was lit with a striker and gas and oxygen levels were altered until a proper flame was created. The original flame was large and yellow but it is not used during experiments because it is inefficient and dirty due to there being an incomplete combustion so soot is produced. Position A was created by twisting the air intake port by turning it counterclockwise which made the flame turn blue. To decrease its size even more they had to turn the gas flow valve clockwise to decrease the amount of gas.…

what is the best height that will give the marble the potential energy to hit the target cup. Energy is the ability to do work. Potential energy is the energy of position and kinetic energy is the energy of motion. In order for the ramp to be successful, the ramp had to have the right amount of potential and kinetic energy. If you have too much potential energy than the marble would have too much kinetic energy and the marble would not land inside of the target cup, it will go right over the top of it. If you have too little potential energy then the marble will not have enough kinetic energy and the marble will not land inside of the target cup, it will hit the front of the cup The hypothesis for this investigation was that 200 centimeters would be the best height for the ramp to succeed and for the marble to land directly inside of the target cup. 200 centimeters is the best height for the marble to have enough potential energy to land inside of the target…

The goal for this experiment is to determine which out of the four balanced chemical equations best represent the thermal decomposition of sodium bicarbonate. The guiding question will be answered with the outcome of the sodium bicarbonates thermal decomposition and it being plugged in into the four balanced chemical equations. John Dalton atomic theory explains two fundamental laws of chemistry which are the law of conservation of mass and the law of definite proportions. The atomic theory states that a chemical reaction is simply a rearrangement of atoms and no atoms will be destroyed or any new atoms will be produced during the process. By doing the correct procedures I identified the II balanced chemical equation to have the correct thermal decomposition of sodium bicarbonate. The II balanced chemical equation was 2NaHCO3(S) > Na2CO3(s) + CO2(g) + H2O(g).…
