Characters:
Joe Walsh - the father of the Walsh family and is unemployed. He is a drunk and went to jail many times and used to serve in the navy when he was young.
Rita Walsh - The mother of the Walsh family and is also unemployed, but sometimes cleans peoples carpets for money or taking care of their children. She cares for everyone in her family.
Adele Walsh - considered to be the main character in the story and is the daughter of Joe and Rita Walsh. She is always angry or upset at her family. She wants to live on her own and wants nothing to do with her parents. Only wants to be accepted by others.
Milly Walsh - Also the daughter of Joe and Rita Walsh and is the younger sister of Adele. She is always happy and has the innocent face on. She doesn’t know what’s going on most of the time, but enjoys life anyway.
Ralphie Pillar - a very intelligent young man that gets very high grades in his classes. He gets bullied sometimes and Adele is his girlfriend. Just like Adele he wants to get accepted by others.
Myhrra - is the neighbour of the Walsh family. She would always visit once in a while and take Adele’s side in any argument. She is a very nice lady but very talkative about others.
Byron - The son of Myhrra. He is a very spoiled child that gets everything he wants. He is a bully to other kids and if he doesn’t get his way, he gets very angry.
Setting:
The setting is in a small northern New Brunswick Mill Town, usually in the Walsh’s house in 1972.
Major themes:
Depression - Walsh’s house is the main focus in the story and their place is always depressing. Adele especially hates the place and wishes to leave.
