Definition Paper on Honor Essay Example
Reed Kolany

Ms. Richardson
Period 1 Honor. There is a little bit of it in each of us. Some more than others do, but they earned it. Honor. Or it could be honour. It does not matter how it is spelled, it means the same universally. Honor. Great men and women earned it. They have gone beyond their normal duties to earn this. Honor. Local heroes have this too. They fall under the same category as great men and women. Honor. I think you get the point. I could keep going, but I need to get to the meat of the meaning. So here it goes… “Hey! You in the back turn around! Yes, you, turn around! All right then, now that everyone is here, we can get started. I know that none of you want to be here, but I am here to change your minds, more like change your lives. Doesn’t everyone like story time?” He says. The room seems to be empty, but then again it just so happens to be filled with 15 of New York’s finest delinquents. “I’m not asking you to give me a limb, but I’m just asking for you to listen to me. I only get half an hour before you get carted back to wherever they keep you, so let’s get started.” He exclaims. After seeing the group of kids he got today, he thinks to himself, oh god, how I am going to convince these kids to change their ways. There is no way I can, but I can always give it a shot. “I was going to start with ‘Once upon a time’ but I know you don’t care for that very much, so I’ll start from the beginning. It all started when I was real young, well actually right around your age. I was your typical dorky Boy Scout, but then again, I really wasn’t. I wasn’t really ‘Normal’ by anyone’s standards. I was on par with everyone else my age in my troop. I was in a few honor’s classes, but not too many to make me a nerd. What balanced all of this dorkiness out was that I played three sports and was good at them too. But this is not a story about my life as a child, it’s about something else. Something all of you need.” “Is

Honor is unique for everyone. Each individual has their own perspective on what the word “honor” means. Several stories help describe honor in their own way, but they share a common idea. “Autumn Rose” by Kevin Kyung, describes honor through a teenage girl and her relationships. Another short story called, “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan, demonstrates through a young girl and her passion for the game of chess. An additional piece of writing is a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald called The Great Gatsby. The novel illustrates honor through the actions and eyes of its characters. Throughout each piece, they all demonstrate honor. Being nominated to become a member of the National Honor Society is a highly prestigious honor, and I am very grateful to be a candidate. I have always strove to do the best that I can to achieve the highest grades possible and to stand out amongst my peers. Not only do I focus on my academics, but I strive to be an outstanding asset to the student body throughout my years here at East Clinton High School as well. Getting admitted into the National Honor Society has been one of my goals since I first arrived here at high school, and I have recognized the standards for entry into the organization. I understand that to become an official member of the society, I need to acquire and demonstrate four key characteristics of an ideal National Honor Society member: scholarship, leadership,…

The supreme good to humans would be happiness. But what constitutes happiness? Humans would be more driven to say a sensual pleasure but this is not all true. This would be only the animal instinct but humans equate happiness with so much more. There are three types of life—that thriving on sensual pleasure, the political, and thirdly the contemplative life. Most prefer the sensual desires of happiness. Honor shows recognition of goodness therefore being honored cannot be the highest goodness.…

Honour and certainty are both qualities an individual may desire having. To be honoured by one’s name, or to be certain that through life they’ve made the right decisions. Honour is a clear sense of what is right and proper while maintaining great respect; certainty is freedom from doubt. In a sense these two traits are connected; with honour comes certainty, and with certainty comes honour. People want to be certain that what they are doing is right and will be satisfying in the end. With certainty in actions comes pride and honour with the results. Although before the pride and honour come into play, the right decision must be made and making this decision is a struggle for most individuals. Deceiving and conniving may seem simpler than being honest and working hard. There may seem like many quick and easy ways to do things at the last minute but they aren’t honorable. In Hamlet, William Shakespeare suggests that individuals struggle to restore honour and certainty because of procrastination and deception.…

There are many concepts, that Americans are exposed to- and even use- in their regular day to day lives, that are not very clearly defined. Maybe these concepts are too confusing. Or too broad to clearly understand. Or they’re just vague. Or, perhaps, maybe these concepts simply are not valued enough within that American “go-go-go” mindset to have time taken to really think about and understand what they mean. One of these cheapened, romanticized concepts, is honor. Honor always has, and always will, exist in some way or form in every single society, including America, however morphed and faded it might be.…

Honor is the first of the Marine Corps core values. Honor requires each marine to exemplify the ultimate standard in ethical and moral conduct. Each marine must exemplify an uncompromising code of personal integrity, be accountable for his or her actions as well as holding other marines both junior and senior to their actions. We failed our fellow marines in this aspect by not encouraging them enough to complete the training course and allow them to fail.…
