Why Do We Learn English
Why Do We Learn English The phenomenon comes into vogue that Chinese people receive English education at an early age. Even the Chinese students are willing to show off their English skills or are proud of specializing in English, while what the most veritable motivation for studying is English seems to be confusing. And I, as a typical Chinese student who has been learning English for a long time, was also curious about that and explained it basing on two aspects; one for the society and one for every individual. English now is treated as a tool to connect China to other countries in Chinese society. It will be required to take part in the flow of globalization if a state or an area is expected to become well-developed, so it's essential to communicate with the other states. In this way, English can serve as a bridge of communication for it's the most widespread language in the world, so we study English. For the part of the individual, it has become a mainstream that it will be much more competitive for an excellent English learner when facing the fierce competition. Nowadays the employers are more demanding than before so that they require the employees to be versatile, which extremely encourage a great many people to study English. In addition, the innate curiousness on other civilization also evokes great interest of many people to study English. Just like Apollo visited Qin dynasty, Chinese people are also eager to learn the western culture. In this case, English has become a carrier which leads us to understand the western literature, art, and so on. So we study English and some of us have become specialists contributing to cultural exchange like Fu Lei, who was a prominent translator and translate lots of western literature. To sum up, English do has a permeable effect on the Chinese society and every Chinese. It actually play a important role in our modern life, which, I think, accounts for the reasons why we study English.
