Volunteering Reflection At Oak Trace Elementary School
Since the beginning of the trimester, I have been volunteering three days a week in a second grade classroom at Oak Trace Elementary School. I have enjoyed every minute of my time here because I feel so appreciated by everyone that I help. Every day I walk in, I am greeted by the women in the office, and then I am usually waved to by a student in the hall on the way to my classroom. Once I get to the classroom, I am greeted in the best possible way by the students. Most of them will run up and hug me, and Mrs. Hall will always greet me and then put me to work. Lately, I have been leading math stations in the hallway. Mrs. Hall says that the kids often get very rowdy in the hallway, but that she trusts me to take authority in this kind of situation. …show more content…
I truly do feel as if it takes a certain person to be successful at the kind of volunteer work I do, and I have those qualities. I care for people a lot, and every second grader wants to feel cared for, especially when it comes to learning and they cannot pick up the skill. I always make an effort to ask how their days are going and how their previous nights/weekends because I recognize that there is more to life than school too. Many times, the girls will get in petty arguments, and both will come to me crying or asking what to do, and I think it takes a certain kind of person to deal with that – a person with a lot of patience. It is especially difficult when the girls are upset because “so and so was talking about me behind my back” or “I have a crush on so and so, but he likes her more.” It takes a certain kind of person to hold back the laughter and not look that little girl straight in the eyes and say, “get used to it honey!” All in all, I think that my time at Oak Trace has been impactful for me and the students, and I think that everyone appreciates the work I am

Although, the volunteer work is part of the requirements for the Honors program, it is a way of life for me. I know the importance of helping those who are less fortunate or who are simply going thru. It also teaches our children how to have a giving heart, and to always be thankful for the blessings in their…

The school faculty completes their part by keeping up with the students and making sure they get home correctly( e.g. bus, walker, or car rider), making sure that the teachers do not have too many students that they cannot handle, and organizing a positive behavioral support system that can be used school-wide. The students have the duty of adapting to the rules and procedures of a new teacher, and completing harder work after their summer break. Students that have caught my attention are students who that are academically…

Once again, I was placed in Mrs.Metcalfe who teaches second grade at Bens Branch Elementary. Mrs.Metcalfe took attendance while the students waited patiently on the carpet. After she took attendance, she addressed that she had taken some privileges away from the students because the students did not picked up their mess after having centers and would not follow instructions that the teacher gave. She explained that centers might return for the upcoming school year if they behaved properly. After she addressed the issues of the students, she instructed everyone to go back to their desks and waited till they put their thumbs which meant that they were ready for the lesson of the day. Mrs.Metcalfe went up to the front of the class to use the projector and expected her students to follow what she was doing on their worksheets.…

Over the past several years I have worked as a substitute at Hindman Elementary. During that time I have filled a variety of positions, giving me the chance to become very well aquatinted with both the staff and the layout of the school. i was given the opportunity to work in the office quite frequently last school year, so much so, that I was given my own log in for the school's Infinite Campus, with limited access. From my substitute experience I know the daily routine of the school and have learned how to do a few things in the office such as, using the intercom, fax, and taking and transferring calls. I consider myself a friendly, hardworking, and trustworthy person. These qualities are desirable for any job, especially those working with…

I have had experience volunteering with the Urdd, supervising groups of primary school children at Glan-Llyn; where another member of staff and I were responsible for a group of children while they took part in various activities. Each Tuesday morning for the last year, I have volunteered at Ysgol Gynradd Cemaes at the Infants' department, where I helped the children with their work and spent time with small groups of children on specific tasks. During my time volunteering at Ysgol Gynradd Cemaes, I also spent time with pupils who suffered from learning difficulties, and this helped me to see how certain tasks have to be adapted in order for pupils of varying abilities to succeed. I have also played a large part in the process of transferring pupils in my school's catchment area from primary school to secondary school, by volunteering as a Year Twelve buddy, providing a point of contact at the school for the pupils if they felt in any way uneasy or upset. I was also part of a group of Year Twelve students who ran an arts club for pupils from years 3-9 where primary school children were introduced to the school and some of its current pupils and students through a series of arts and performance workshops. Through…

In addition to my enthusiasm for investing in young lives, I have done some volunteering as a teaching assistant to get some hands-on classroom experience for formal teaching. My experience at the school allowed me to acquire a number of skills and also help enhance my weaker ones. The key skills and strength that I possess for success include my enthusiasm and dedication to my assigned duties and my ability to support and inspire young people through being a good listener to them and offering appropriate advice. I am also highly skilled in assisting the instructor in supervision of students’ arrival and departure time, performing clerical and record keeping tasks and maintaining discipline of the classroom in the absence of the instructor. One of my greatest strengths is helping maintain a well-disciplined learning environment, with minimal interruptions and maximum productivity. This is achieved by pulling misbehaving students aside, reinforcing positive behaviour, and implementing a reward system.…

During my semester in Nature of the Learner I was placed in a second grade classroom at Johnson Street Elementary. This was a global studies school. I was very hesitant on my first day of going into the school. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I was excited to be in the classroom because second grade was my favorite age group to work with. During this placement I assumed that I would help out the kids within the class but I didn’t. My teacher had me help out this one little guy every week. I was able to help him with his writing and math. I enjoyed doing that but that left me with about five minutes in the actual classroom to observe. During this short amount of time I would walk around the room and ask the children if they needed help.…

At my volunteering place I welcome not only the children but the parents with a smile. Every morning when the parents drop their kids off to the playground they stay after and turn in their child’s homework and sign them in. They try and reach for the new homework for that week but I tell them I will do it and that they can go socialize or spend more time with their child before leaving. Every week we have at least three parent volunteers in our classroom. Most of the time I am the only high school volunteer so the help from the parents is so helpful, but I want to limit the things they do and make the time much easier for them. They do so much everyday and having to do the same amount of work at a saturday school they are just volunteering? So I make sure that if they want to help with things I let them, but most of the time I just get everything ready to go. This then brings me and the parents closer and if they need any type of help from volunteering to outside of the school, they know who to…

I was granted the opportunity to work with the children and teachers of Coal Pit Learning Center for community engagement week. I worked with the children throughout the week to provide relief to the exhausted teachers and be a person who can look over the children. I was gifted the opportunity to work with a variety of children of ages from 3-5. My first day was tiring, but full of excitement. The children were a mix of shy and excited as we walked into their classroom for the very first time. I thought to myself, as my 3 classmates and I were thrown into the chaos of a group of 3 and 4 year olds, what I should be doing to help. But there was no need for the teachers to explain to us what to do, the children immediately gave us jobs of playing with them or making us watch them race their cars around the room. The week turned out to be a wonderful learning experience for me and the people I worked with.…

I blended easily with the other employees because most of them were college students as well. When I arrived at 8:00 a.m., the center only served a few children at a time; however, by 10:00 a.m. the room was filled every day to the max capacity (30 students). As a volunteer, I moreso played with the children, kept them on track for any activities that may have occurred, and even read them a story for storytime. Although I was not able to play a huge role amongst the students, I observed a variety of behaviors of both the students and their leaders that easily connected with the topics of this…

Every week at a nearby elementary school, I tutor children from kindergarten to sixth grade as a part of their YMCA after school care program. Typically, I work with the same group of students to finish their math homework, work on a project for social studies, or help them sound out new words. By watching them thrive in a positive environment and develop a love for learning, they constantly teach me new things. After being at school all day and dealing with ample amounts of stress, their innocent and bright minds cause me to ground myself and realize what is at the core of all of my hard work in academics: a thirst for knowledge. Perhaps the most rewarding thing has been witnessing them improve dramatically, such as being able to read a word with ease that we sounded out multiple times the previous week, with a smile on their face and a new sense of confidence and accomplishment. Steadfastly teaching them that by working hard and not giving up they can reach their goals, it leaves me with such a proud feeling when I see them putting it into action. Tutoring has been a two-way street: the children have impacted my life in a positive and meaningful way just like I have impacted…

Last year, I went to Pinetree Preschool, where there is nothing but young children. That was an experience I enjoyed and found so valuable and opened my eyes to the potential and possibilities of children. This year, I chose the complete opposite of Pinetree and I volunteered at Primrose, a retirement home for people who suffer from alzheimer's or dementia. At Primrose, I saw a completely different side of human life. That may seem like an exaggeration but I tend not to spend much time with people much, much older than me, as they were at Primrose. I learned an incredible amount of patience and understanding and just life in general during my time volunteering at Primrose, that I could not had received anywhere else.…
