PROJECT PROPOSAL

1.INTRODUCTION

1.1Motivation
My friends and I use to do our movie rental at DVD King video shop based in CBD of Windhoek. One day I noticed that they write down the name and the phone numbers of each customer and also which movies are being rented out, and again customers taking time in the shelves searching for the desired movies to rent. This incident got me thinking as to how can I make a video rental system, make it very easy to use, and implement it on any system if possible, so I came to conclusion to make a web-based interface system that would be platform independent.

1.2Definition
The project is aimed at developing an online (web-based) computerized system that would facilitate activities of the video shops and bringing together individuals to rent movies at their convenient place and convenient time (office or Home). It will take an advantage of the internet and World Wide Web to radically improve the video rental business process.

1.3Problem Statement
The complex nature of the existing rental process can be attributed to a number of factors: a. Most of the operations are done manually (a new customer have to fill out an application form before a clerk enters the information into the system) this results in a lot mistakes being made. b. The manual movement and distribution of paper-based transactions resulted in substantial delays within the process and significantly limited the company’s ability to prioritize and improve performance. c. Processes requiring precise coordination between groups in different departments tend out to be very challenging. d. There is no centralized repository, hence change in data by one department may not reflect in another department. e. Customer transactions (i.e. requests for statements, incorrect information, address changes, etc.) were frequently lost due to the mobility of information from one department to the other. f. Tracking and evaluating the rental process by management to determine areas that need improvement is almost impossible.

1.4Objectives
By implementing this system, the video store will gain competitive advantage over other video stores and greater overall productivity in terms of business process. The proposed video rental system aims to achieving the following: a. Developing a new system better than the current system. b. Manage to build-up a friendly environment to customers. c. Enlarge the marketing of video rental to near-by towns. d. To create a movie rental store whose goal is exceed customer’s expectations. The primary objective of this project is to address the common problems which video rental system experience. The objectives include: • Ensuring that the rental system is in the real time performance. • Increase the number of customers by the end of the year.

1.5Justification
The whole system is compliant with W3C for HTML and as well as CSS. The basic site design will have a very clean interface and won’t have too many things shown at once (which will makes it look more relaxed and not so busy), also the interface incorporates tab features to have all the options in front of the end –user to make a very easy experience when using the software. The customer and various activities information will be stored securely, and every person who is entitled to have access to information on the system will make use of password ensuring the security of data. There will be no or very slim chances of records going missing or being misplaced. Access to information will also be faster eliminating the...
