Unforgettable Experience
An Unforgettable Experience

It was a very tough year. When I look at the menu written by myself, vividly, the small tidy noodle restaurant crosses my mind. The menu seems to smell of Kung Pao Chicken?Mapo Tofu?Anyway, just dishes cooked by Mom.Mom is so good at cooking that one day she decided to set up a restaurant on a sudden impulse in the spring of 2009. "Xi Yang Yang, like the Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf!"Mom put it when we thought over the restaurant's name.To support her,I volunteered to work as a waitress if I had free time.It proved a very hard part-time job because I was supposed to do all kinds of things and there was no salary at all.Xi Yang Yang was located at a road close to the residential area.Accordingly, most of the customers were residents living nearby, and sometimes they ordered take-out.In order to reduce cost,Mom only hired a cook and a helper since she herself was the chief cook and her daughter,me,was a multiple-role waitress. Except for basic duties that a waitress had to do including serving customers with tea, dishes and extra rice, cleaning up all the stuff in the restaurant, and doing accounts,I had to do delivering when the deliver man's hands were full.Owing to this,I became so familiar with that place and dealt with people from all walks of life.Every time when the restaurant was filled with customers, which I feared most,I had barely any time to take a breath and just kept serving, serving and serving! Sometimes I couldn't avoid being teased by uneducated men.I still remember the oily skinned and clown-looking balded head who called me impolitely questioning why there was a fly resting on the table. Some complained to me that Mapo Tofu tasted strange even if Mom cooked it with authentic Sichuan cuisine flavor. The most happy and relaxing moment for us was about 2 hours after the noon. There were few customers coming and we could watch horror movies in a poky room behind the restaurant. They were all young migrant

Third, the whole place was extremely loud. The waitress couldn’t even hear what our orders were. I understand that a large restaurant will have a lot of people that will talk, but we weren’t even able to talk to people at our table without having to yell. We could even hear other table’s conversations near us about disgusting things. I probably will never…

Every time I go to this diner the service is the first thing I notice. Normally after walking through the door and finding a seat, a server is with us in just a minute or two. The server is right there for us, if we need anything. We find that the staff is fun to be around and they treat us like we are friends or family, joking, laughing, and having a good fun time. Since they are open throughout the night there can be some issues that arise because of crowds from the bars and clubs. Sometimes it can be a loud place and if there are a lot of people then we may have to wait for service because there is only one server. The crowds from the bars and clubs can get unruly at times and cause problems with other customers but the staff tries to keep it a calm and fun place.…

Last weekend, I went to Suwanee, GA to see my father and stepmother because it had recently been my stepmother's birthday. In celebration we chose to dine out at a restaurant called Gulf Coast Grill. It was the first time my family had eaten at the restaurant, but will not be the last. Once stepping inside, I knew it was going to be interesting because the restaurant had a very strong beach theme as well as a live band playing. After being told it was going to be a fifteen to twenty minute wait, I was surprised when our table was called after less than ten. The restaurant experience was already off to a good start, and only continued to get better.…

The first visit, was with my entire family, making it a party of nine. There was no room for such a large party, but the manager made it work and got us a table within ten minutes. One of the waiters went over quickly and noted our drinks down, and under five minutes everyone was sipping on their drinks. After ordering, the food took about fifteen to twenty minutes to arrive at our table. Everything looked and smelled delicious, my mouth got watery instantly. The tortillas and guacamole were made right in front of us. From the host to the waiter, service was wonderful. They smiled genuinely every time.…

Inside, I saw American vending machines, Italian waiters, all plastic golden cutlery. I knew immediately this is not a real Chinese restaurant, but one that caters to other people. This is what others think when they talk about Chinese food, the mere shell of Chinese that is revealed to others. My daughter turned to me. “ Do you like it, Ma? I picked it out just for you.” she said proudly. I realized that this faux Chinese culture is exactly what my daughter has become. She wears her identity vainly, open for everyone to see. If only she could see herself from my view.…

“Hello, my name is Stephanie and I will be taking care of you tonight.” This is my routine that sounds rather scripted. Waitressing is just one of the many roles in my life. Wait staff almost have a script for how to handle customers. Being a waitress is a positive role in my life. It is something I can enjoy while doing and work with people who appreciate working with me. This is one of my favorite roles that I have had in my life. Waitressing has made me a more open person. I have learned many different things in these two years of waitressing. There are certain expectations that all customers have upon entering a restaurant. Within waitressing, my role consists of serving customers, working with other wait staff, cooperating with the kitchen staff, and fulfilling my mangers expectations.…
