The Tiger Got His Stripes: A Short Story
How the Tiger got His Stripes In the beginning, the animals in the jungle had plenty of food. They all walked along the ground and had no need to search for anything. Then one day they suddenly discovered they were low on food. The larger animals ran out before the smaller ones. The Tiger was the first to go on the hunt. The bright orange fur did not camouflage well, yet none of the animals expected to be hunted to pickings were easy for the Tiger. The Monkey noticed the Tiger stalking him one day. He prepared for the day that the Tiger would strike. “That silly beast, his orange fur is so noticeable. I can see his stalking trail, and he is mine.” That night the Tiger walked around the Monkey’s ground shelter. He went his usual route. Nothing was different until, snap! We were fine before you decided to eat other friends for food!” The Monkey said. “You do not know the pain of hunger like I, little rodent. I do what I must to survive.” He snarled back. The Monkey pondered his words for a moment. “Well, since you need the food, I must look out for the needs of the Jungle. If you sleep there I cannot eat you.” The Monkey thought about his proposal. “This is the best thing for me. You will not ever look in trees for food from this day forward. Aside from the fact that they are beautiful and lovable animals, they are first and foremost important to the health and natural structure of the rainforest. Because of their diet consisting of those wonderful ripe fruits, these monkeys are seed dispersers. This means that they aid in the distribution of seeds of the fruit trees that they feed from. A seed can pass through the digestive system of a monkey completely unharmed. It takes about three hours for the seed to go all the way through the digestive tract. This ample time allows the monkey to carry the seed far away from the original tree. This in the end means that the seed the monkey eventually disperses back into nature is able to grow into another fruit tree that the Panamanian Spider Monkey and the other fruit-eating animals are able to subsist on. Without this monkey’s special ability of transporting whole and unharmed seeds to other areas of the rainforest, those fruit trees would not continue to thrive in the areas where those seeds may not have reached before. This would mean less new trees growing which would be stunting the conservation and flourishing of the rainforest…

Every year wild animals seriously hurt or kill people, usually their owners or family members. Big cats have killed many children and even grown men, not to mention the dogs’ people think their cougar will be friends with, they never survive. Monkeys are always the pet people wish they could have. However, they can never be trained, tamed, or basically domesticated like people think. Take Louie for example, a Black-capped capuchin born in August 2004. He was bought by a family in Chicago when he was just a baby. Within months he had bitten their daughter several times severely, but when he finally bit a child outside the family, his life was in danger. Louie's owner found herself in court fighting against the parents of the child who demanded that his head be sent off for rabies testing.…
