Although his character was written in a small part of the story, he plays an important role. He was the White family’s voice of reasoning and warning. Sergeant Major Morris talked to them of his experience with the Monkey’s Paw and what happened to the first man who had it. The author uses a bit of imagery, describing to the readers how Sergeant Major Morris’ “blotchy face whitened” when he replies to Herbert about getting his three wishes. That use of imagery shows how nothing good came from his wishing on the Monkey’s Paw. John meets Polly. She was the type of person everyone gravitated towards and wanted to be around because she had such a sunny disposition and warm brown eyes that were trusting. After a year he began to court her and they fell in love. He eventually asked for her hand in marriage and they got married. Soon after the wedding, John and Polly moved into a house together and in May they had their first child, whom they called George. Alex Wilson was not a very determined or highly motivated person. He may work in his parents’ business but his laziness burned it to the ground. In order to salvage what he lost, he scammed various people for their money, including his own family. John took money out of his own business to help but things continued to get worse. He started stealing money from his brother-in-law, Jim Hutchison to pay back the creditors but his attempts were futile and rendered useless. The Wilson’s good reputation was ruined and John was humiliated. He wanted to let things die down for a while so he decided to go to Canada for a year. He told Polly it would be just enough time to let the townspeople forget about the scandal. John promised to write lots of letters and then he was off, leaving behind his 6-month pregnant wife. Saskatoon was where John chose to go. He was intrigued by this prairie city because it was “The Fastest Growing City in the World”. All it needed were more people. In the movie Sergeant York my group and I decided to do the scene in which Alvin York gets struck by lightning. In my opinion is the turning point of the character, because Alvin is known as the “bad boy” in town. He does not have very much respect, and this scene is completely life changing to the character. The scene first starts off Alvin riding his horse in a very bad thunderstorm. The sound is a non-diegetic orchestra that is playing immensely loud. The orchestra music builds a lot of tension because while its playing there is lighting striking. The music perfectly captures the audience attention because viewers will be sucked in thinking that Alvin York is gonna die or get struck by lighting because the music is emphasized with its weird medallic tune that creates the eerie feeling of “whats going to happen”. Coincidentally Alvin ends up getting struck by lighting. Almost immediately after he gets struck by lightning, the orchestra music is switched to the background with a different tone. Initially the tone of Alvin riding his horse during the storm was very unpleasant and suspenseful but the aftermath of being hit by the lightning changed it from being a dark atmosphere to a light. John Wilson in the beginning is an honest man trying to make a better life for his family back home in Scotland. My opinion of John Wilson started out as him use being a nicenguyntrying to help everyone out. John starts life out in Canada pretty rough, he can't find good work and the climate is hard on his lungs. In an attempt to get back home he applies for the army but is turned down because of his lung condition with a little luck he lands a good job with the Police force. John meets Jessie Patterson, who he immediately takes an interest in and John being all bright and using his brain has a wife and 2 children back home but that doesn't stop him for going for Jessie. John's feelings toward Jessie turn serious and shortly after a rumor that the Mountie in fact is still married appears. When confronted about this by Jessie's dad he says that he was married, but his wife died after he left the old country John lies to cover up his old marriage and i think that is completely wrong and makes him a huge liar!…

A quaint family of three receives an unusual monkey paw that is capable of making any three wishes come true. Despite the caveat of a curse attached to the paw, the family chooses to make a wish, evoking from the story a suspenseful attitude as the reader becomes wrapped up in finding out the Smiths’ fated ends. In W.W Jacob’s short story “The Monkey’s Paw,” there are many instances of foreshadowing in order to keep readers engaged and on the edge of their seats. In part one of “The Monkey’s Paw” the White family is introduced to the monkey’s paw by, family friend, Sergeant Major Morris. Major Morris explains the indelible outcome of using the paw. Mrs. White asks if anyone has used the paw before and Major Morris responds with “‘The first man used his wishes, yes,’”...”’I don't know what his first two wishes were, but the third was for death. “The Monkey’s Paw” tells the story of a small but close family, the Whites who are visited by Sergeant-Major-Morris a friend of Mr Whites who brings with him the monkey’s paw. Sergeant-Major-Morris then tells how the owner of this magical monkeys paw is granted three wishes. Despite warning from Sergeant-Major-Morris, Mr White in greed wishes for two hundred pounds. We are then left wondering if Mr Whites wish will come true and before any money is found, Herbert White dies in a tragic machinery accident at work. Visited by a representative from the work the Whites receive two hundred pound in compensation, which we are then left to believe is the two hundred pound Mr White wished for and that the monkey’s paw is in fact magical. After Herbert is laid to rest his mother, Mrs White, in desperation demands Mr White use one of two remaining wishes to wish their son alive again. Despite protest Mr White wishes and later knocking begins at the door, which may be Herbert White. Mrs White escapes her husbands restrain and dashes to the door while Mr White searches rapidly to find the monkey’s paw in order to wish his son dead again to prevent his wife seeing her son’s tattered, torn body. In this extremely dramatic climax Mrs White finally gets the bolt off and ready to rip the door open just as Mr White finds the paw and uses his third and final wish. The street was deserted and Mrs White was left in devastation, Mr White in relief and we are left in a state of uncertainty, who was knocking on the door? What was Mr White’s final wish? And was all this the result of the monkey’s paw?…
