The Ocean Floor
The Ocean Floor is not flat. The depth of the ocean ranges from sea level to 13,200 ft below sea level. The most shallow part of the ocean is Continental Shelf. The Continental Shelf slowly drifts into the Continental Slope which is below the Continental Shelf. The Guyot, Seamount, Island, and Trenches are all supported by the Abyssal Plain. The Guyot is on the Abyssal Plain and looks somewhat rectangular. The Seamount is also on the Abyssal Plain and looks rectangular with a triangle on top. If a Seamount grows so large that it reaches above sea level and is forty to 1,200 ft wide it is called an Island. Finally, there is a Trench. When a piece of the land on the Abyssal Plain dips down it makes a Trench. One Trench is so large that if you

What is the deepest place on Earth? The Mariana Trench of course. The Mariana trench is the deepest and most unknown place on Earth. The trench is 36,201 feet deep, which is very surprising compared to the average depth of an underwater trench, which is 12,200 feet deep. Many oceanographers are fascinated by the trench and have attempted dives to go to the bottom. In 1960 the U.S. Navy sent two divers in a manned vehicle to daringly dive deep into the trench. The trip took five long cold hours to reach the very bottom of the Mariana Trench. The world’s Deepest trench is not your average 12,000-foot deep hole.…

In order to understand the ramifications of an event such as the sinking of the Essex one needs too understand the community that produces the crew. Nantucket was an island community much more than the literal sense of word. The islanders of Nantucket saw themselves differently than the rest of the word. They learned the skills of whaling from the original Wampanoag tribe. They were Quakers with a stoic sense of standards and community. The whale men from Nantucket saw themselves as superior to most other sailors of that time period. Hardship and perseverance were virtues held by the whale men and the women. The women ran the town while the whale men were at sea for years at a time. This type of work ethic and fortitude, and the worlds desire for oil, combined to make “the village of Nantucket one of the richest towns in America.” “In the Heart of the Sea” It also created a close-knit community with a few very successful and influential families that married with each other maintaining a strong central hierarchy.…

Still most of what we know about the sea floor has not come from personal observation. It has been learned by using remote sampling tools and marine robots. Using these objects has produced a vast amount of information. The deep sea floor is the most tectonically vigorous region of our earth. Oceans cover more than 70% of our earth surface and have several different regions. As you move from the coast line you encounter the ocean shelf, it is 1/6th of the earths’ surface. Next there is the slope which is a drop deep into the ocean. At the base of the slope there is the continental rise which has a gradual rise and debris coming of the continent is deposited here. The continental slope marks the true edge of the continent, where the rock that makes up the continent stops and the rock of the ocean floor begins. Beyond this slope is the abyssal plain a smooth and nearly flat area of the ocean floor. It is here that debris from the continent settles. In some places, deep, steep-sided canyons called trenches cut into the abyssal plain. A continuous range of mountains called the mid-ocean ridge winds around Earth like a seam on a baseball. There are mountains on the abyssal plain, too. Some reach above the ocean surface to form volcanic islands. Others, called seamounts are completely under water. These forms are covered by pelagic sentiments which soften them like a…

The Aral Sea disaster is one of ecological disasters that effect terribly on our life. It was fourth largest lake in the world, but nowadays 80 per cent of water disappeared. The main reason why the Aral Sea has shrunk so dramatically is because water from the rivers flowing to it has been diverted for irrigation. The Aral Sea basin is fed by the Syr Darya and Amu Darya Rivers, which flow directly into the sea. Other rivers feeding the basin are the Tedzhen and Murgabi Rivers and the Karakum canal, as well as shallow rivers from Kopet Dag and western Tien-Shan. Water from the two largest rivers has been diverted for purposes of irrigating central asia's rice and cotton production. Therefore, it could be said that human activity has been the main cause of the shrinking of the Aral Sea. Disappearing the Aral Sea effect on unemployment. Local people can’t work in agriculture. Today no fish are caught in this sea. Also countries surrounding the Aral Sea working on cotton production and irrigation use water’s bound. It has the major impact on human health. Using chemicals, pesticides and fertilized has resulted in increasing many types of diseases. Today the sea water is undrinkable, because it is saltier than the open ocean. The effect of salt problems has changed the climate around the sea. It resulted in dust storms that spread diseases and related cancers. It means that The Aral Sea is important problem not only for Kazakhstani people, but also for the South Pole. We should protect our nature and our…

At The Earth's Core.txt At The Earth's CoreAt The Earth's Core by Burroughs, Edgar Rice Ewriting Format by Carl Peterson © 2001 PROLOGUE IN THE FIRST PLACE PLEASE BEAR IN MIND THAT I do not expect you to believe this story. Nor could you wonder had you witnessed a recent experience of mine when, in the armor of blissful and stupendous ignorance, I gaily narrated the gist of it to a Fellow of the Royal Geological Society on the occasion of my last trip to London. You would surely have thought that I had been detected in no less a heinous crime than the purloining of the Crown Jewels from the Tower, or putting poison in the coffee of His Majesty the King. The erudite gentleman in whom I confided congealed before I was half through!--it is all that saved him from exploding--and my dreams of an Honorary Fellowship, gold medals, and a niche in the Hall of Fame faded in to the thin, cold air of his arctic atmosphere. But I believe the story, and so would you, and so would the learned Fellow of the Royal Geological Society, had you and he heard it from the lips of the man who told it to me. Had you seen, as I did, the fire of truth in those gray eyes; had you felt the ring of sincerity in that quiet voice; had you realized the pathos of it all--you, too, would believe. You would not have needed the final ocular proof that I had--the weird rhamphorhynchus-like creature which he had brought back with him from the inner world.I came upon him quite suddenly, and no less unexpectedly, upon the rim of the great Sahara Desert. He was standing before a goat-skin tent amidst a clump of date palms within a tiny oasis. Close by was an Arab douar of some eight or ten tents.I had come down from the north to hunt lion. My party consisted of a dozen children of the desert--I was the only "white" man. As we approached the little clump of verdure I saw the man come from his tent and with hand-shaded eyes peer intently at us. At sight of me he advanced rapidly to meet us." A white man!" he…

The Aral Sea was once the fourth largest inland sea in the world. About, a million years ago from now the northwestern part of Uzbekistan and southern Kazakhstan were covered by a massive inland sea. This sea was formed when all the waters retreated from a big land; they left a broad plain that contained highly saline soil. Due to the retreating of water many ancient remains were disappeared. The only remnant that remained was a big inland sea which was the Aral Sea. The Aral Sea was an inland salt water sea, one odd thing about this sea is, there was no channels connected to the sea. There were two different rivers that feed into the Aral Sea which are the Amu Darya River that flows down from Pamir Mountain and the other one is Syr Parya that flows from Tian Shan Mountains. The fresh water from these two rivers keeps the water of Aral Sea and the slat levels in perfect balance.…

Today life our life is just a link or chain of so many numerable living beings that was succeeded one another honours over nearly 4 billion years and even today new volcanoes continue to sculpt our landscapes it appears like molten rocks from the depths, solidifying, cracking, blistering and spreading a same crust before falling a dormant fertility. At the right distance from the sun not too far and too near the earth perfect balance in able to consume water in liquid form. The rivers stool minerals from the rocks and gradually added them to the fresh water of the oceans and the oceans became heavy with salt.…
