The Adverse Effects Of Video Games On The Youth
Personally, I feel that video games can be the cause of aggressive behavior among people, because exposure to games containing violent images has been proven to impact individuals’ mindsets negatively. I agree with Dr. Michael Rich, in that he explains this influential power in regard to violent video games when he states: “Players might be quicker to throw a punch during a disagreement or even carry a weapon to school, simply because they see so much of that on the screen” (Television and Video Games 1). Dr. Rich’s statement explains that viewing violent actions over time causes a person to become accustomed to seeing violent behavior, which can make it easier for that person to behave in that same way himself. In addition, video games can be addictive, and can be distracting from important parts of everyday life. In other words, teenagers are spending more time playing video games than doing homework, or studying, which is influencing their futures in a negative way. Also, video games can even have a negative impact on health in that they can cause a strong addiction. Next, video games can cause aggressiveness as well as violence. Video games are having a negative impact among people because they can be distracting, can influence health, and can cause violence. Initially, video games are influencing people by causing distraction from parts of everyday life. An article on the American Heritage Dictionary proves how “Avid gamers are similar to people who smoke a lot of marijuana — in that they don't get much done” (Henshaw). This shows how people are playing video games are an addition just like drugs and are distracting people from productive tasks such as volunteering, reading a good book, taking care of bills, writing an article, inventing something, or mowing the lawn. Instead, people want to get to the next level and finish the game. Furthermore, people are spending more time playing video games, then focusing on school and doing homework, and studying for

Most people would argue that video games cause teenagers to commit violent crimes, but not everyone agrees with that. There are many cases that people have conducted research on teenagers that have committed acts of violence after playing video games. The authors of these articles state that video games leads to aggression and violence in the people that actually become aggressive or commit crimes. Throughout the past couple of years technology as a whole has been on a drastic up rise. Companies now days are able to produce more and more realistic like gaming experiences. These life-like graphics and visual effects put the gamer right in the action, bringing joy to many while enraging numerous others. The way in which one views and understands the game’s contents is the way in which one perceives the video game. More often than not parents, who do not play video games, tend to focus on the negative aspects of the game, namely violence. The parents who are buying the video games for their children see only the cruelty and disgusting features making up only part of the whole. Most avid gamers would agree with the above statement, arguing the blood and gore is just a small part of the many aspects of some video games that complement the other components such as graphic quality and plot. The way in which one perceives an individual video game more often than not depends on whether or not the person is a gamer. The way in which some people perceive video games angers me because it seems as though they are over looking the big picture and viewing the game with a pessimistic point of view. By doing this, those people are doing themselves and the creators of games an injustice.…

In the United States video games and violence have become synonymous to each other. Some of the most popular games today tend to be the most violent. This has brought up the issue of video game violence and its relation to adolescent violence. Many argue that video game violence primes anger and aggressive thoughts in the individual using them. But research and proof of this argument has been limited, inconclusive, or contradictory which has brought up debate over the issue. Two scholarly research articles, “Video Games and aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behavior in the laboratory and in life.” by Craig A Anderson and Karen E Dill and “Video Games and Youth Violence: A Prospective Analysis in Adolescents” by Christopher J Ferguson, published in 2000 and 2010 respectively, debate this topic and discuss the psychological effects of violent video games on the user. The article by Anderson and Dill asserted that video game exposure increased aggressive traits long-term and short-term while the research article by Ferguson made the claim that outside conditions and factors such as personality traits, family environment, and depressive symptoms far better indicated increased aggression or youth violence than violent video game play. Both articles conducted their own studies in attempts to measure the correlation between video game violence and aggression level. However, Ferguson’s article had a more complete argument, accounting for more outside third variables, expanding upon data from previous conducted studies, and counter-arguing opposing studies and evidence against video game violence. Overall Ferguson’s article provided a stronger argument against video games causing violence and aggression, drawing upon more references and evidence, counter-attacking and pointing out flaws of previous research conducted, and analyzing numerous other factors.…

Do video games actually incite violent behaviors in the real world? Well Christopher J. Ferguson thinks so because he says, “Children learn what video games teach, and often that lesson is doing violence.” Scientist say that children that have played violent video games are more aggressive than children that have not played. The more a child plays violent video games the more violent they will become , which increases the likelihood them to be violent. When children play video games they become physically and mentally agitated, beginning to think aggressively and become violent. The excessive rage alter with the age of the individuals because younger children do not know the difference between the game and real life occurrences. Mark and Keisha Hoerrner have a story to back up this theory of video games create violent actions, “Thomas isn’t a programmer or network engineer, though he’s considering that as a possibility for the future. He doesn’t have to worry about that now, though—he’s only 13 years old and has a long time to make up his mind about a career. For now, he’s content with the fact that in the…

Video games are basically known as a staple among American teenagers. Many teenage boys and even some girls spend hours of their day staring at the TV screen and rapidly pushing buttons on a controller. Many of the top selling games in America strongly involve violence in their gameplay. These types of games raise many questions about how they affect the people playing the games. Are there negative consequences or are these claims just made up? There is research to back up both claims but the negative effects of violent video games seem to overpower the positives of recreational violent video game play. Manufacturers should enforce their own policy towards people who play their games in a more efficient way. Video games have multiple severe problems associated with the violence that is so heavily incorporated into them. Video games can give a false sense of reality and allow gamers to become so immersed into their game play that lines between real life situations and game play situations begin to blend together. Playing video games can also become an addictive distraction. Many avid gamers can spend hours at a time glued to their TVs playing on their Xboxes, PS3s, and other gaming consoles. This time spent playing games can take away from other activities. Important things like schoolwork and grades can be affected by spending all one’s time playing games instead of focusing on more important things. It can cause people that play the games to go to sleep super late in the night. The students then have to wake up early and go to school tired and will not be able to focus and stay awake to learn the material being taught. Video games also spur a sedimentary lifestyle. Obviously, not getting enough daily exercise leads to weight gain and other health issues. Violent video games also cause behavioral and social problems. These games desensitize people towards killing and steer them in the direction that killing is…

After reading the yes side of do video games lead to violence, I’m going to have to say I disagree with them. Because if that was the case then every little kid that played a violent game would try and do what happen in the video game but they don’t. Yes, they might get more aggressive but that don’t mean it’s because of the video game. A lot of violence comes from how the kid was raise and what he or she has seen from their elders. In the research that was provide the highest time of risk to gain violence for kids was between ages 9-12 and 15-18. But this is not just them using research by video game they been using television and movies. In some ways I can see where video games can raise aggressive. But they just didn’t use that to figure out if it was just the video games causing it to rise, it could of raise because of the movie or television that he or she watched. So there for their research is incorrect for the question that they are asking.…

There have been many arguments that have been brought up arguing that violent video games are making kids more violent. Some arguments go as far as saying all video games are making kids more violent. However, the argument can go both ways. People have brought up that video games help kids with hand eye coordination and allow them to vent their frustrations. The earliest videogame has been around since 1958, and this game was a simple game that had no human and no violence in it. As technology became more advanced the videogames became more violent. Starting with a ball bouncing right and left in a videogame called Tennis for Two and ending with an incredibly violent video game that encourages killing other humans in Manhunt 2. There has been much research done on violent video games and their effects on kids, but no outcome has been decided yet.…

For the past 40 years, violent video games have been painstakingly researched and have been found to bear five very hard to argue points. These facts are that violent video games cause aggressive behavior and thinking patterns, increased psychological arousal, and the lack of a desire to help others around them (Anderson, 2003).…

I looked at five other studies that were related to my research. The first was from an article from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology entitled "Video Games and Aggressive Thoughts, Feelings, and Behavior in the Laboratory and in Life" by Craig Anderson and Karen Dill. In the article, the effects of violent video games on youths were studied. What was found was that real-life violent video game play was positively related to increased aggressive behavior and delinquency. Also,…
