Booklet 3: Molecules for life
Cells are the smallest units of all living things. Inside cells are molecules (water, glucose, protein). Any molecule is made of atoms. Cells carry out metabolic reactions in order to stay alive.
Anabolic reactions- large molecules are built when small molecules join together.
Catabolic reactions- large molecules break down to form smaller molecules.
Organelles- basic components of cells
The different biological molecules in cells can be grouped into 2 types: ORGANIC and INORGANIC COMPOUNDS.
Organic Compounds – contain carbon, linked with other elements such as, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur, iron and phosphorous. Organic molecules are usually large molecules like sugars, starch, fats, proteins, vitamins & enzymes.

Inorganic Compounds – Usually never contain carbon but does contain Carbon Dioxide. Inorganic molecules such as water, mineral salts, and gases such as oxygen.

INORGANIC COMPOUNDS
Inorganic Compounds are compounds that contain other elements. 1. WATER
Water most important inorganic molecule for living organisms.
Main functions of water in living organisms: * Solvent. Mineral salts dissolve in water allowing them to be absorbed by roots of plants. Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen must dissolve in water before they can enter and exit cells. * Chemical Reactions All chemical reactions in living organisms take place in water. * Transportation. Minerals transported in water to plants, and other substances are dissolved in water so can be transported around body in blood. * Reproduction. Sperm need water to swim to ova. * Body shape. Plants rely on water for shape and structure. * Regulate Body Temp in plants and animals. Animals produce sweat to not overheat, plants, transpiration helps to cool

The human body consists mostly of water, and is a major constituent to the human body and vital organs; of this 90% include blood plasma, lymph, urine, saliva, digestive juices, bile, cerebrospinal fluid and tissue fluid. Water enables substances to be transported throughout the body, red blood cells for example, as wells as supplying the medium required for metabolic reaction to take place (respiration). Without water the progression of these fluids would not be possible. Water is constantly being transported between the fluid compartments of the body.…

All organisms are made of cells. The cell is the simplest collection of matter that can be alive. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of every organism. Cells fall into two distinct types: Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic. While Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells are similar in that both types of cells are bounded by a plasma membrane, all contain cytosol, and all have chromosomes and ribosomes; they differ in the location of their DNA, organelles in the cytoplasm, and their size.…

Water can easily be called the lifeblood of Earth. The planet’s surface is covered by 70% water and it is the essential component of all living beings. 75 % of the human body is comprised of water, with 90% of blood being water. All living beings, whether they are animals or plants, need a definite percentage of water present in their body to remain healthy. In human beings water helps regulate the body's temperature and blood pressure. It is also an important part of saliva, sweat and tears. In plants important nutrients are carried from the soil to the plants through water. The water bodies of the world have more life forms present in them than found on land.…

For example when NaCl enters water they dissociate into ions (Na+) and (Cl-), this occurs because both ions are more attracted to water dipoles. The water molecules surround the ions therefore making it hydrated, the molecules are bound providing a osmotic surface. This process takes place withen animals and plants. In order for a plant to abssorb minerals from the soil and for the blood(waterbased) to transport glucose, amino acids and minerals. Without this soloution living orgasisms wouldn’t be able to physical survie due to lack of nutrients.…
