Study Strategies
The three study strategies that I chose are SQ3R, using flash cards and A.S.P.I.R.E. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. First survey, or skim over the assignment, paying close attention to chapter headings, bold type, charts and summary. Next, question what is needed to understand and complete the assignment. Ask questions based on the preview of the assignment. Read and highlight important information and answer the questions. Recite answers to the questions and make notes. Review the material and questions frequently. I found that this method is almost identical to the PQRST method, which stands for Preview, Question, Read, Summarize and Test. I think I already use some of the steps in the SQ3R method. I have a tendency to skip over the reciting part of this method, which is shocking, considering my learning style is verbal. Flash cards are amazing!!! I can remember using flash cards back in grade school, all the way through high school. I even used flash cards in cosmetology school to learn the different nail diseases. I found it slightly more effective to have another person test me with the flash cards, rather than testing myself. With a verbal learning style, saying things out loud definitely helps me remember. I was doing some research online at studygs.net/aspire.html and found a study strategy called A.S.P.I.R.E.
A: Approach/ attitude/ arrange * Approach studies with a positive attitude * Arrange schedule to eliminate distractions
S: Select/ survey/ scan * Select a reasonable chunk of material to study * Survey the headings, graphics, pre- and post- questions to get an overview * Scan text for keywords and vocabulary: mark what you don’t understand
P: Piece together the parts: * Put aside books and notes * Piece together what you’ve studied
I: Investigate/ inquire/ inspect * Investigate alternative sources of information * Inquire from support professionals and other resources for assistance

One technique that I find helpful to remember the material that I study is writing down the important information that I read, also known as the keys points of a story. I also try to go back and re-read the material again. I don’t have the best memory so I sometimes have to continually read something over and over to understand it. When reading the material I found that I use is Pay attention to what you’re hearing or reading. I…

The three study strategies I have and will use during this course to increase my effectiveness are having a quiet place to study, reading for clarity, and taking notes while reading. I have found that studying in a quiet place helps me to concentrate better. Also, while studying in a quiet place I do not have to worry about any distraction which allows me to understand what I am reading because I am able to answer the questions I originally had while after I surveyed what I was about to read. Note taking is also a study strategy that helps me increase my effectiveness in this course because I am able to refer back to my notes before completing assignments.…

The three study strategies that I have chosen are Recite, Rehearse, and Write, Study during short, frequent sessions, and using flash cards. Recite, Rehearse and write is a way of learning the material by respectively reviewing it repetitively. Study during short, frequent sessions is a way to gain the knowledge by reviewing the material in short intervals, leaving it for a short period of time and then returning to go over it again. Using Flash cards is a process that uses visual cues to help the intake of information that you are studying.…

After reading this article, I have to honestly say, I have tried all of these techniques from late elementary school right through High School. I did the flash cards, put in the hours of studying. I went to tutoring and attended all before/after school homework help and test prep classes. For me it really didn’t work. The best study method that I found to be effective and helped to produce a better grade was reading over the material right before the test. It was fresh in my mind and I could recall most of what I just read.…
