Social Service Reflection
As another example, one of my group member as well share her feelings regarding the challenges she is experiencing at her placement. She mentioned that she asked one of the staff members a question regarding the resources they agency uses to help their client, but the staff’s response left her unsatisfied. When she shared this experience, it sounds to me that the question she asked was too generic and not specific, therefore, I did some clarification just to understand specifically what she wants to learn. I was glad to give her a feedback regarding the question she asked because I am doing my placement at an employment agency too, and I am knowledgeable about the question she asked. First, I explain to her that organizations have policies …show more content…
I have had the opportunity to apply theory to practice at my placement; having this privilege has enhanced my knowledge that I bring to the classroom settings and used it is in an appropriate manner. I believe that I deserve a B+ letter grade because I have demonstrated a high level of knowledge and integrity as learning professional. My peers and professors have a positive impact on my learning from the very first day I came to Seneca College to pursue education as a Social Service Worker. However, I am looking forward to learning more from them because life is a teacher and the more we live the more we learn. During class and group discussions, I actively participate, and avoid being judgmental. I demonstrated good active listening and commented when it is necessary to do so without interrupting or talking over people. I value and recognize people’s input and opinion during class and group discussion. The factor that is impacting the dynamic of my group is each member’s personal trait (McKinlay & Ross, 2008, p. 35). This event is happening because there is conflict that has not been resolved among some members in the group. As a group, we will address this issue by calling people out and bringing their awareness to the values and norms that was put it place when the group was formed. Professionalism is important for Social Service Workers to develop because it is useful in all areas of work in

Social work is a practice-based profession as well as an academic discipline that advocates social change, development, and the empowerment and liberation of society for individuals and communities in need. Professionals in the field of social work help people overcome some of life’s most difficult challenges such as poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, physical illness, divorce, loss, unemployment, educational problems, disabilities and mental illnesses. They help prevent crises by counseling individuals, families, and communities to cope more effectively with the stresses of everyday life. The interest I have in human and social services derives from my desire to assist individuals in my community suffering from adverse effects. I believe in order to eliminate the stigmas associated with human and social services careers; one must proactively and collaboratively be engaged with the individuals utilizing services and colleagues. Collectively, this will encompass effective, efficient, and responsive forms of communication, as the persons in need of assistance possess diverse perspectives of adequate treatment. The populations that intend to assist are those suffering from mental illness and other adverse effects such as rehabilitationwhich inhibits their ability to function properly in society. Societal perception of these individuals…

I am currently completing my service learning at Martin Luther King Elementary School working with children ranging from Kindergarten to 5th grade in an after school program. This program provides the children with a safe and comforting place to do their homework, hangout with their friends, and get a snack. Since I am just getting to know these children I do not know everything about them and their background, so I do not have a lot of examples that relate back to the class work we do. In class I feel as if a lot of the material we focus on relates back to the parents, home life, and how they have been raised thus far. I only see them once a week, so I cannot make judgments regarding their course of development and influences that have left impacts on their life. The two examples that I have noticed that we have covered in class include Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory and The Ecological Systems Theory. I have noticed elements of the Sociocultural Theory in the children’s dialogue. Considering their age the children have a very advanced dialogue with rather colorful language. Personally, I was not even familiar with some of these words that Kindergarteners and 1st graders are expressing. I think this has to do with the culture they were raised and possibly the community. I think that the Kindergarteners at the school pick up on language that is used by the older kids and then they start to say it. Although teachers and administrators try their best to stop the kids from using bad language and reprimanding them when they do I feel as if the colorful language they have come to know is forever imbedded in their brain. I think the Ecological Systems Theory plays a big role in understanding these children and the school I am working at. For me it was rather different to go into a school like this in a bad neighborhood and see children behaving in ways that I had never seen before. However, for the teachers that work there are so used to it they don’t even…

I was completely surprised that my English class was a service learning course that first day. A surprise that has been good in every way. I love that my learning experience in English has been so much more than sitting in a classroom. Yes, I'm learning about how to improve my own writing and critical thinking skills but I've also had a new appreciation for talking about food. I have even more of an appreciation for the vegetables I'm eating, I've learned about using putting plants together as natural pesticides. I've had the joy of planting new life and clearing away the old.…

Service learning can allow people to see the world from a different perspective. Since most humans tend to segregate into social groups based upon race or wealth, relating with people outside of one’s social group can be arduous. With service learning, someone will get to interact with people of different ethnicities and social classes. The article also addresses that providing services for people in need only provides a temporary solution for their reoccurring problems. Instead, with time and service learning, students will realize that the solution is to help a person in need permanently conquer his or her problems. Another concept from the article is being able to reflect from service learning and challenge your beliefs. In order for this to happen a person must provide service and reflect…

In my internship, I didn’t have a lot of client interaction, and hands-on experience. If I were to rate my experience, I would say 5 out 10. Dr. Lowe promoted us to attend social work workshops and seminars to expose us to different aspects of working within the community. I was assigned to a daycare facility to assist the owner of the daycare with the kids. I met a child who I thought was being physical abuse. I mentioned it to the Dr., and she instructed me to contact the DCFS. I reported the incident, and she knew who the child was because he was a patient of hers. After I made the report, I was upset and needed an explanation of what is the proper procedure for handling such a case with DCFS. She never gave me any feedback on how to handle such a touch case. I…

I chose to complete my service learning hours at the Quantum House. It is an organization located on 45th street behind St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL. The Quantum House is a supportive home where families can stay while a member of their family is being treated nearby. The Quantum House offers all meals, housing, and entertainment during the entire stay. The families are asked to pay thirty-five dollars per day, but it is never forced if the family is unable to pay. At the center they have a play room, a family laundry room, double kitchen, dining area, living room, a back porch, a garden and an outdoor playground. Each room is furnished just as a hotel is with a private bathroom in each. They are expanding to add more rooms and a larger kitchen and dining, but for now they are able to accommodate ten families. During my service there were nine families staying at the house. All toiletries and kitchen supplies are offered, each room is labeled by different names, such as ‘Hibiscus’ and corresponds with their own kitchen cabinet for their personal kitchen/pantry items, and their own shelf labeled in the refrigerator. All of their meals they provide are either donated by restaurants or made by individuals in the kitchen or at their own kitchen and brought into the Quantum House to serve to the families staying. While I was doing my service, they were having leftovers from the previous night (turkey, sweet potato mash, ham with grilled pineapple, and rice with red beans) donated from Café Boulud.…

On our first meeting with Mr. Dante Rarangol, he mentioned one of the essential requirement that he obliged us to do, is to work and serve other people whole heartedly not just for the sake of our grades, but also for the sake of ourselves. He let us realize the feeling of after-serving. The feeling of fulfillment after you serve because you’d extended your arm for the people in the community. He wants us to feel and love what we are doing because only in loving our job is getting that feeling of fulfillment. We discussed on our first meeting “What is Service Learning”, he also informed us about the new curriculum the one they had attended at their seminar. It is all about “The Environmental Education and Information Division, DENR”. Our NSTP 2, as he said, is focusing on providing mechanism in sustaining quality in an environment. He reviewed us about Service learning. Some of us, including me, forgot about our lesson that he taught last semester. Service learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting, frequently youth service, throughout the community, so basically it is a “knowing and doing”. He also ask for “what is a community”. He defined it as a social group, determine by geographic boundaries and common interest and values.…

I chose to go to my home town to work with Kid 's Klub for my service learning project. Kid 's Klub is a ministry of Wesley United Methodist Church offering quality before and after school care and summer camp programs for children ages five to fourteen. The reason I chose to go to my home town for this project is because I regularly participate in this program when I am home for breaks. While I am there I assist the children in any area in which they may need extra help, as well as helping with preparations that need to be made for activities and field trips. This project relates to the passage of Matthew 25:31-40. This passage talks about children in reference to helping each other out when one is in need and doing the right thing. Another passage that I would like to mention is Proverbs 22:6. This states that a child should be raised in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it.…
