Reflection On Service Learning
These past two weeks I have been staying after school for service learning. The service learning that I'm going to be doing is to clean the Pacoima libraries garden on Saturday, June 4th. What we have been doing for the past two weeks was to plan out what we were going to do at the library, the parts that we each had, and also learn about what serves learning was and what resources we had to help out our community. To being with, the first thing we did on the first day was to learn about what serves learning means and what kind of resources we had in our community. What I learned was about what we could do to help our community. We also talked about what resource we had in our community that would help us. The resources that we had was

Since middle school, I have been involved in numerous local beach and river cleanup events. In Nature Academy I was able to design my own community service project. During 7th grade, I banded together with a few fellow classmates and we decided to clean up the streets of Felton one staple at a time. The state of the poles there were horrible; covered in the metal pieces from prior flyers posted there. After several weeks and hours, we had defeated the evil staples. In 8th grade, I had done some more community service on a smaller scale. By helping out in the community garden at school, I had helped the crops grow, that were then disbursed to families in need of fresh…

The first service learning project I completed was in 2006 which was a participation in tutoring a year six student in the Aquinas College junior school. This tutoring was during winter. After the first week I found it difficult to complete three sport trainings a week (1 in Melville), an after school guitar lesson, a hockey game on Friday nights plus the tutoring program, I thought I was going to have to stop the tutoring and complete service learning in a different area. But after the first week of tutoring I found that tutoring became a priority, I felt that Ricardo found the tutoring much help and seemed to benefit from it. I finished the tutoring program without missing one session.…

Last year I did an underpants drive for the Exodus Foundation in Ashfield. Doing this service learning task connects the students with the broader community and links us with other church agencies and organisations. As a school, it is important to do this and to understand the importance of donating and doing service. It is important to support the homeless and others in need, those who are less fortunate than us. As a school, we come together and make a difference in our wider…

I was granted the opportunity to work with the children and teachers of Coal Pit Learning Center for community engagement week. I worked with the children throughout the week to provide relief to the exhausted teachers and be a person who can look over the children. I was gifted the opportunity to work with a variety of children of ages from 3-5. My first day was tiring, but full of excitement. The children were a mix of shy and excited as we walked into their classroom for the very first time. I thought to myself, as my 3 classmates and I were thrown into the chaos of a group of 3 and 4 year olds, what I should be doing to help. But there was no need for the teachers to explain to us what to do, the children immediately gave us jobs of playing with them or making us watch them race their cars around the room. The week turned out to be a wonderful learning experience for me and the people I worked with.…

I was involved in many service learning experiences all throughout highschool. I was on National Honors Society and we would ring bells for Salvation Army and adopt children around Christmas time. We often volunteered at schools to help watch children, while parents were receiving help in finding careers or when they were being helped in some other manner. However, my favorite service learning that I was involved in was helping coach Special Olympics. This service learning is one of the reasons I am becoming a teacher, and one of the main reasons why my focus is Special Education. I coached my team in soccer, basketball, and track. I loved every minute of it. I spent more time with those kids than I have with any other service learning combined. I coached them starting my sophomore year all the way until I left for college. It was hard leaving my team and I am upset that I cannot go back and see them more often. Service learning has made a huge impact on my life and is something that everyone should become involved with. When you find that one cause that you are passionate about helping with it can transform your life like it did…

Service learning is a valuable way for students to engage with their communities. When tasked to incorporate a service learning activity into my English class I was faced with a few difficulties. Language Arts standards are very complex and cover many different areas including: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Service learning lends itself readily to the speaking and listening areas, however, I decided that I would attempt to build a unit that enriches student learning in all four domains of the English/Language Arts curricula. The following unit, which I titled the “Changemaker Unit,” is the result of this process.…

Coming into the project I was looking forward to interviewing a veteran, at first I really wanted to interview a World War Two veteran. I thought it would be very cool to sit down and hear an untold story of a true American hero that fought in one of the most memorable, and one of my favorite wars. But as I continued to search for a World War Two veteran I couldn’t find one so I joined groups with Tyler, Jose, and Mauricio. They had then told me that we would be interviewing Tyler’s stepdad, who was currently enlisted. Of course my dream of interviewing a word war two veteran was tossed out of the window. Then I had thought about it and to hear the story of a national hero that is serving in the War on Terror currently would be pretty cool. Although I didn’t get my World War Two veteran, I was still pretty stoked about hearing our veteran’s story.…

A couple of classmates and I had gone to Stanley Holmes Extensions in Atlantic City to help elementary children with homework. Plethora of things had gone well that day. As soon as we had arrived to Stanley Holmes Extensions there was a police officer that had briefly explained what we had to do. Having officer Law explain to us are task was great because we weren't just sitting around when the children had arrived. Helping the children out with homework had also gone well. Most of the children listened when being helped with a problem, and didn't just wonder off or ignore us. Talking to and getting to know the little kids went well. Not one of us had gone up to a child to try to talk to, but instead they came up to us and had asked questions. For example, a boy named Tyreese, he had come up to us and had asked us what are names were, where we were from, what school we were from, and how old we were. Tyresse was the first child I had helped. All I helped him with was some…

One of my service learning projects was based on my bill to the president. I addressed an issue that is contradicting our environment from the past years and is still occurring today. My bill topic was about racial profiling towards black people from the police and how it's affecting our country. I wrote my bill to the president to show him what others think about the conflict that is occurring; And what laws we want the government to change to make this country a safer place for every race. I felt strongly towards this topic because everyone deserves to be treated the same. I believed that he was suitable to contact this issue towards because he would understand the issue better than anyone, because of his race. We shouldn’t be handled differently if we have a different race than white. Nonetheless, my bill wasn't able to pass due to our penalty. Our bill didn’t have the majority of votes in congress. This project taught me to reanalyze my thoughts and place details that provide enough information that show our perspective on the issue and how it should be solved.…

The service learning experience was the most exciting part of the senior exit project because it allowed you to be creative and explore more hands on with your topic. Considering, how much research and proof there is about the influence advertisements have on children’s food choices really helped me focus my service learning experience on combating the junk food commercials with my own version of advertising healthy food to adolescents. My first product I chose to make was a cookbook that I titled “The Bite”. When beginning the process of making the cookbook I knew I wanted it to be attainable food for most of the population therefore, my recipes were focused on being healthy and affordable. I quickly discovered how much time and creativity…

My volunteer work was at the Amarillo SPCA. The Amarillo SPCA is a home for cats and dogs that are still in good condition and can be put up for adoption. This organization is a non-kill and does not receive any assistance from the government; they simply rely on donations and sponsorships from local people and companies. They are located at 11901 S. Coulter in Amarillo. The shelter has 53 kennels, 12 puppy cages, 5 exercise yards, and 30 cat kennels. The purpose of the organization is to help these innocent animals find their forever home with an owner that will show them love and compassion as much as possible. Here at the Amarillo SPCA they are trying to stress that no animal should be abuse or neglected and there is always a second chance for them.…
