The Service Learning Experience
The service learning experience was the most exciting part of the senior exit project because it allowed you to be creative and explore more hands on with your topic. Considering, how much research and proof there is about the influence advertisements have on children’s food choices really helped me focus my service learning experience on combating the junk food commercials with my own version of advertising healthy food to adolescents. My first product I chose to make was a cookbook that I titled “The Bite”. When beginning the process of making the cookbook I knew I wanted it to be attainable food for most of the population therefore, my recipes were focused on being healthy and affordable. I quickly discovered how much time and creativity

Taylor, what a great company to choose for your topic. I have never been a fan of McDonald’s food, only their sweet tea. My husband, step son, and some of the people I work with eat there. I have asked them why and they say it’s cheap. When they came out with the salads, I researched it and was surprised how many categories were in them. I am sure them offering healthier options has helped the company and especially helped their PR department to paint a better image of the company.…

Service learning is a valuable way for students to engage with their communities. When tasked to incorporate a service learning activity into my English class I was faced with a few difficulties. Language Arts standards are very complex and cover many different areas including: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Service learning lends itself readily to the speaking and listening areas, however, I decided that I would attempt to build a unit that enriches student learning in all four domains of the English/Language Arts curricula. The following unit, which I titled the “Changemaker Unit,” is the result of this process.…

Coming into the project I was looking forward to interviewing a veteran, at first I really wanted to interview a World War Two veteran. I thought it would be very cool to sit down and hear an untold story of a true American hero that fought in one of the most memorable, and one of my favorite wars. But as I continued to search for a World War Two veteran I couldn’t find one so I joined groups with Tyler, Jose, and Mauricio. They had then told me that we would be interviewing Tyler’s stepdad, who was currently enlisted. Of course my dream of interviewing a word war two veteran was tossed out of the window. Then I had thought about it and to hear the story of a national hero that is serving in the War on Terror currently would be pretty cool. Although I didn’t get my World War Two veteran, I was still pretty stoked about hearing our veteran’s story.…

Our first SMART goal was to increase the sets or repetitions for the participants each session, but it unfortunately was not achieved. We noticed they were bored with the repetitiveness of the same routine, which brought us to devise a plan to get them better motivated. Instead of traditional weightlifting and cardio, we implemented sports equipment, such as soccer balls, volleyballs, and kickballs, and changed the workout routine a bit. Once we changed it and made a new SMART goal, we measured the progress by making sure the participants were actively motivated for at least thirty minutes of the session. We started with making sure they could stay active for fifteen minutes, and then the next session for twenty minutes, until we reached our goal of thirty minutes. Each week we saw an increase in their motivation and performance after we gave them encouraging remarks for their accomplishments in games that we took part in as well, like…

The fear of darkness is a phobia for those who have been affected by it in some way or the other. It is not the fear of the dark but the possible risks concealed by darkness. This kind of fear can sometimes prevent us from unpleasant situations. Not everybody around experiences this fear, otherwise people would not be hired as security guards or night watchers but for those who do have this fear have an associated learning experience. This essay narrates about an informal learning experience leading to the fear of the dark.…
