Service Learning Research Paper
1. Describe your understanding of service learning. What is it and why do you think it is included in this course?
a. Service learning is an education method that is used to provide the student with the ability to discover themselves, become productive and helpful citizens, and to gain academic knowledge while doing so. I think service learning is included in this course because it helps us to become more connected with our surroundings. Great teachers are active in there community and know the struggles that the community faces and wants to help. When a teacher understands her community she can better understand her students. Also, I think it is included to teach us that we can always find time to do what is important. Quite often we trick

I am excited to be doing service learning. However, I wish I had more time to get involved with Special Olympics here in Manhattan. Since my schedule is so busy I am working with the Bread Basket for my first three hours of service learning. I expect that it will be hard work, but it will be well worth the effort. I predict that I will start to love helping my community and will want to find more ways to get involved. However, I do think that basketball will prevent me from being as involved, as I would like. For my next four hours I would like to get some of those helping little kids, that is one of my favorite areas to help in. I hope that I stay involved in my service learning even after this class is over. It is important to help your community and I think I will feel good about myself for trying to make a …show more content…
I was involved in many service learning experiences all throughout highschool. I was on National Honors Society and we would ring bells for Salvation Army and adopt children around Christmas time. We often volunteered at schools to help watch children, while parents were receiving help in finding careers or when they were being helped in some other manner. However, my favorite service learning that I was involved in was helping coach Special Olympics. This service learning is one of the reasons I am becoming a teacher, and one of the main reasons why my focus is Special Education. I coached my team in soccer, basketball, and track. I loved every minute of it. I spent more time with those kids than I have with any other service learning combined. I coached them starting my sophomore year all the way until I left for college. It was hard leaving my team and I am upset that I cannot go back and see them more often. Service learning has made a huge impact on my life and is something that everyone should become involved with. When you find that one cause that you are passionate about helping with it can transform your life like it did

~Mahatma Gandhi. Service is to help others in need or not in need. I am excited to try to do even more service in the future. I have many ideas for the school when it comes to service. One idea is to help children in hospitals by just making them something like a card or decoration. My dad is working with a company that is rebuilding St. Peter’s Hospital and I know that some of the kids in the children’s section of the hospital would love something to cheer them up. Right now for service I give my old clothes and toys to my younger cousin and if she doesn’t want them, we take them to the Salvation Army. Also like I had mentioned in the first paragraph we donate over three or four hundred dollars a year to the WGY Christmas wish organization. That money goes to poor families so the parents can buy presents or food for their children. I know I need to work on this skill in particular but I have many good…

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

During my high school years approximately around my sophomore/ junior year my basketball team including I myself attended the Hoops for Haiti fundraiser that Meredith Elementary school hosted. Hoops for Haiti helps aid the disaster relief fund that is held in Haiti. Hundreds of elementary school children paid $5 each for a chance to play with not only Neumann-Goretti’s women’s basketball team but also the men’s team too. All proceeds were meant to go directly to rebuild and fund schools in Haiti. I decided to talk about this specific service that I participated in because not only was it fun but I got to interact with kids younger than me and was able to put smiles on their faces, those who were there and hopefully those in Haiti knowing that they do have people who care and want to help them out in every way possible.…

In order to concisely put my view of how service should be executed is as Ernesto Sirolli summed up in his Ted Talk , “Shut up and Listen”. In order to truly serve a person must know what the community needs and then figure out how to best provide it. Doing otherwise I believe is imposing yourself or your group on another that you feel is lesser than me. And it's not going to be that successful but rather a hassle for the community. Change and service comes in many shapes and sizes, they can be direct and hands on or indirect. A “good” or “meaningful” service experience may not be going to another country to build houses for week when you have no more experience than creating buildings with your Lego set. Sometimes it's helping cut vegetables at the soup kitchen because it is understaffed or providing the funds for the community to help…

The first service learning project I completed was in 2006 which was a participation in tutoring a year six student in the Aquinas College junior school. This tutoring was during winter. After the first week I found it difficult to complete three sport trainings a week (1 in Melville), an after school guitar lesson, a hockey game on Friday nights plus the tutoring program, I thought I was going to have to stop the tutoring and complete service learning in a different area. But after the first week of tutoring I found that tutoring became a priority, I felt that Ricardo found the tutoring much help and seemed to benefit from it. I finished the tutoring program without missing one session.…

Talk to at least three trusted adults about the issues you research. These people may suggest good ideas and websites for information. One example would be your city or county government website. Service learning is a valuable way for students to engage with their communities. When tasked to incorporate a service learning activity into my English class I was faced with a few difficulties. Language Arts standards are very complex and cover many different areas including: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Service learning lends itself readily to the speaking and listening areas, however, I decided that I would attempt to build a unit that enriches student learning in all four domains of the English/Language Arts curricula. The following unit, which I titled the “Changemaker Unit,” is the result of this process.…

Coming into the project I was looking forward to interviewing a veteran, at first I really wanted to interview a World War Two veteran. I thought it would be very cool to sit down and hear an untold story of a true American hero that fought in one of the most memorable, and one of my favorite wars. But as I continued to search for a World War Two veteran I couldn’t find one so I joined groups with Tyler, Jose, and Mauricio. They had then told me that we would be interviewing Tyler’s stepdad, who was currently enlisted. Of course my dream of interviewing a word war two veteran was tossed out of the window. Then I had thought about it and to hear the story of a national hero that is serving in the War on Terror currently would be pretty cool. Although I didn’t get my World War Two veteran, I was still pretty stoked about hearing our veteran’s story.…

The first was the comfort I offered to a 1 year old little girl who was unable to stop crying. The second was previously mentioned about how I could encourage the boys that they had the potential to succeed. The benefits I have gained from this service learning experience have been extremely beneficial to me as a freshmen in college. One of the things I learned from this is that many people need all sorts of different resources so that they can live day to day, along with that no matter how bad I think my day may be sometimes or how bad of a life I have that I really am not that bad off. I am forever grateful for the opportunity I was involved…
