Professor Muller
The Journey Just Beginning The speaker is speaking on how far we, as the class of 2014, have come. He starts to talk about how people around him thought he would not amount to anything due to him not being really focused in school. From there, he goes on about how he graduated college with a Master’s degree and a Bachelor’s degree with five years. Before he was about to take his seat, he said one statement that stuck in my head like glue. His statement was, ‘Don’t look at the negative; look at the positive and keep pushing.” At that moment, I was anticipating how I was going to walk across the stage without falling down in my heels. As the people were calling the people in the front row, my heart starting pounding. In my head, I was thinking, ‘Wow, this is really happening; I am really about to walk across this long stage and receive my high school diploma.” When they finally called my name, I could hear my mother and my aunt screaming in the background. They were overly excited for me. I could hear my cousin screaming as well. She was saying, ‘Yasss, Atinuke, my baby did it”. As I was taking my long stride across the stage, I pictured my high school career, the friends I made along the way and the ones I lost due to them not rising to my level of academic success. All my thoughts came to a sudden halt when I had to take a picture with the principal of my school. From there, my thoughts continued to my experience attending prom, to some of my accomplishments throughout high school. As my stride came to an end, I shed one tear in realization that high school was over and my own journey was beginning form this day forward. As everyone was in his/her seats, the principal went to the podium. He announced the graduating Class of 2014 of Eleanor Roosevelt High School. After saying that, some of my peers decided to throw their caps in the air. In my mind, I really wanted to, but I was afraid of the aftermath of it. I was also afraid I would not be able to find my exact cap. Then our school song was played, as we were leaving the Comcast Center to go see our family members and pick up our real diploma. They actually handed us pieces of blank paper that said nothing. We had to pick up the actual document as were leaving from our guidance counselors according to name.
After I took pictures with my closet friends in high school; I beamed out in the rain trying to find my family. The rain ruined the atmosphere a little bit, but I had graduated so that was the last thing on my kind. I watched as my peers shared embraces with their families. I began to feel sorry because I was wondering where family was. After pacing back and forth in the rain, I saw my family. They were waiting for me with flowers in each hand on the steps. I ran like a little kid in search of candy. I was overjoyed with happiness and love. I embraced both my mother and my favorite aunt in the whole wide world. My mom had shed a tear; I noticed that. That made me feel as though I did something right. My aunt was explaining to me that she never gave up on me when others thought I was not going to graduate high school due to my actions and behavior in high school. She said she always dreamed of this moment.
With saying that, she placed on my neck a chord she made. With the chord, she explained it symbolized achievement and growth. I’ve now become the lady she always wanted me to be. My mommy was just stuck in amazement. She was smiling the whole time. I knew that graduating from high school on May 29, 2014, was a source of pride and joy for her. To her, it was as if all her efforts and work on me was not in vain. After taking pictures upon pictures; the family decided we should all go out to eat; we did. We ate at the Chinese Buffet in College Park, MD. While eating, I pat myself on the back. If you knew the Atinuke in high school, you would have been also been pound and surprised. I was the rebellious soul who did things on her own. I wanted to find who I was as a person. From doing that in “high school”, I realized that I am a conflicted soul whose path is still being written.
Graduating high school was stepping milestone. I now move on towards achieving my dreams in college. In choosing Delaware State University, I looked at what I can accomplish while here and the education programs, as well as, the environment and people. I am double majoring in Public Health and Social Work. I plan to put my best foot forward in everything I do here at Delaware State. My journey is only just beginning; the rest is yet to come. I still have more to show and tell the world. I want to be the next big thing. I want my generation to remember what I stood for as a person. Therefore, sit back and watch my life and dreams play out in my favor.

Most people rely on the security and care of others to provide for their loved ones when they put them in a nursing home. What they don’t realize is how much neglect goes on to the people they care most about. Residents are at risk of being abused by their caretakers but they are also at risk of being restrained, which may lead to a form of abuse. At Southwestern Nursing Home I have witnessed forms of neglect and abuse. Nursing homes are meant to be a place for security for the elderly to be cared for in their golden years, and it has become an unpleasant experience for senior citizens being subjected to acts of abuse and neglect.…

What if everything you knew and were used to, such as friends, family and way of life, suddenly changed? This happened to me when my family moved to Puerto Rico for the first time. All the things I was used to in my hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, all the people I knew suddenly changed overnight. At first I didn’t think it was going to be that different. But I soon found out that there were so many differences, big and small.…

The weeks leading up to graduation felt as if they could not go any slower. There was so much anticipation building up in all of the seniors, it seemed as if graduation was all that anyone could talk about. I remember sitting in English class with my friends and listening to our principal Mr. Lowery over the intercom “Class of 2011,” he began “It has been a long road for you guys but you have almost made it!” Listening to him speak reassured me that it was really happening, the moment was finally coming. It had seemed like yesterday I started Temecula Valley High School, getting lost looking for classes, trying to make new friends, and asking people for help. Finally, here it was, the day before graduation had come, Senior check out day. I woke up that morning and said to my self “This is the last day as a senior in high school.” I was pretty excited. Lunch time came at school and all the seniors rushed to the stadium to pick up their caps and gowns and attend graduation practice. Everyone was so excited that it was nearly impossible to keep any of us under control. After hours of practicing the line up for graduation we had finally mastered it and were sent home. On the way home that night all that was running through my mind was.... this is the end of a brand new beginning.…

Things aren’t often what they appear to be at first blush. But embarrassment is. It was one of those boring days at school; my friends and I were used to it. Since we were seniors, we used to participate in the morning act on fridays, as usual for other grades, singing the national anthem first and then doing the daily prayers. It was common to start the day hearing the awful intonation of the principal nun, something that we always laugh about. At the end of the act, we all went to our respective classrooms. Hours went by when the bell rang. It was recess, “finally!” I said, I screamed. My friends and I got together again. As we spoke, ate, laughed 30 minutes, all we had, run faster than Felix Sanchez. Happiness was over, but not for much because one of the nuns called Emma entered the classroom, as usual, but this time was different because it wasn’t a complain. She came with a special message for us. We never thought she would say: “Good Morning students, please pick up your stuff, we are going to cathedral therefor, there won’t be more classes for today”. We all looked to each other and smiled, ear-to-ear. We did as she said and went out to make the line.…

Like many of us, the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost describes a young traveler faced with the choice of which road to take. In order to continue his journey he must decide which road to take, without the chance to return. In this particular poem, Robert Frost metaphorically depicts the average persons thought process of making some of life’s most important decisions. He does this by comparing life’s journey with that of a traveling man who has reached a point in his life that he cannot return. Frost’s poem describes opportunity and difficulty as the traveler realizes he will miss the experiences he may have encountered on the road not taken.…

The emotion overwhelmed me. I didn’t know if I should be happy or if I should be crying; after all, I was only 10 years old. We were just leaving the American Embassy knowing that we have received Visas to enter the new world, new life, meet new friends, and also reconnect with the other half of our family after 20 years. All these new and exciting things seemed so great until it hit me, I’ll be leaving behind my best friends and the other half of my family. I was happy and sad at the same time. I was devastated but also excited. It’s a feeling that is too hard to explain. With it came stress over the upcoming challenges that I will face. Moving to the United States was one of the most traumatizing moments of my life. First year of school in a new country is not easy for anyone, but the easiest way to become accepted is to find your own clique and blend in with the other kids. Not only did I not know anyone, there was also the language barrier. I was stressing out.…

The quote, “Live each moment like your last because tomorrow may never come,” is commonly overused, but the truth behind it is shocking. As an emotional and indecisive teenage girl I would often scream, “I just want to be an adult and be able to do what I want already!” At the time this seemed like a logical statement, but adulthood came faster than I imagined. The many quarrels over extended curfew, cleaning my room, or going out whenever I wanted are now humorous memories. I recall many times engaging in conversation with my mother about how badly I wanted to grow up. Without any hesitation she would always reply with, “Be patient. It will be here before you know it, and by then, you will wish you were this age again.” I often rolled my eyes and sarcastically agreed with her. The power of our words are sometimes incomprehensible to the human mind, but we have the power to cherish every moment, speak positively, or speak negatively over our lives.…

I’ll never forget the day that my nightmares became a reality. We immediately hit it off. Had great conversations and a lot of things in common. We were both single and raising young boys. True friends are like diamonds, precious and rare. False friends are like dirt, found everywhere. Friendship should never be a difficult thing; it should always be the easiest thing in life. An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind. A true friend is a hand that is always holding yours, no matter how close or far apart you may be, someone who is always there and will always, always care, a feeling of forever in the heart. A best friend is the greatest of all blessings, and that which we take the least care of all to acquire. The most valuable thing in life is to have a friend, a true friend.…
