Internship Essay
I spent my 50 hours of senior internship at the Queen of the Valley Medical Center.
Queen of the Valley is the largest hospital in Napa serving local citizens and veterans. The
Queen was founded on the values of dignity, service, excellence and justice. They continue to uphold these values with their commitment to care and innovation. My internship position was concierge support, in which I assisted the concierge at the front desk of the hospital. The concierge desk is crucial in the hospital because it is relied on by patients for assistance and by all of the other departments in the hospital for transporting patients and delivering patient information from the registration offices.
My essential function, or objective, as concierge support was mainly assisting the concierge with daily functions and managing the lobby. The role required providing an escort service for patients being admitted or discharged, assisting and greeting people, discharging patients, delivering important documents, guiding people through the hospital, delivering flowers to patients, signing in lab patients for registration and answering phone calls. The service chair of concierge support is Joe Lewis who initially trained me, but I mostly worked with the concierge, who was usually Jacquie or Hortencia.
These daily tasks demonstrated the essential values-based competencies that I had to show as a volunteer of the hospital. This included demonstrating competence in communication and interpersonal relations, continuous improvement, continuous learning, accountability, teamwork, customer/patient focus, adaptability, community orientation, and stewardship. These

competencies are representative of the Queen of the Valley’s core values. I successfully demonstrated these competencies and my tasks over the course of my internship.
As a student volunteer I was able to provide much needed assistance because most of the other volunteers are

Our job is basically related to a job description, but while that tells us what we need to do, it does not usually tell us how we need to do it. To find that out, we need to look at the Standards that apply to own work. Standards, as with Codes of Practice, will vary depending on the UK country in which we work. Each UK country has National Minimum Standards that are used by inspectors to ensure that services are being delivered at an acceptable level. Finally, and most importantly in terms of how we carry out our work, there are the National Occupational Standards (NOS). These apply across the whole UK, and explain what we need to know and be able to do in order to work effectively in social care. It is important to understand that competence is not only about doing the job; it is also about understanding why we do what we do and the theoretical basis that support the work.…

Clinics, hospitals, and other medical settings are well-organized environments; each staff member has their individual responsibilities that contribute to the success of the health service center. A doctor’s job, for example, involves the direct interaction with patients, as well as diagnosing and illness or injury and prescribing treatment options based on their observations and the client’s personal history record. Some physicians may prefer to write their own letters in certain circumstances, however, they are generally very busy, seeing one patient after another for the entire duration of each day. Because of this, medical and administrative assistants handle a lot of the primary arrangements regarding the appointment scheduling, examination room organization and sanitization, checking patients in and out, as well as various other tasks that the physicians simply do not have time for.…

As a Medical Assistant, it is important to have the office ready before patients arrive, which includes; listening to phone messages from the night before, going over the patient schedules, having the patient charts organized and ready, filling out any paperwork needed for the day, and having patient rooms cleaned and prepped (eMedicalAssistant, 2012). In my Senior Year of being in the National Honor Society, I was excited to volunteer and to help those in need. I helped out with a soup kitchen in Brainerd through another organization that I am in, the Student Council. As I scooped soup into bowls and placed them onto people’s trays, I could see a look of appreciation and gratitude on their faces. This was the first time in my National Honor Society career where I understood just how much my time and effort meant to these individuals. This volunteer opportunity made me realize that a simple meal, smile, and effort to do something helpful and nice can really make someone’s day brighter or easier.…
