IMPACT OF TOURISM
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Abstract

Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity in 2008, there were over 922 million international tourist arrivals, with a growth of 1.9% as compared to 2007. International tourism receipts grew to US$944 billion (euro 642 billion) in 2008, corresponding to an increase in real terms of 18%. This paper is purposed to explain about impact of tourism including advantages and disadvantages. This impact has occurred in some different countries.

1. Introduction

Tourism is travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people who travel to and stay in places outside their usual environment for more than twenty-four (24) hours and not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited. Tourism has become a popular global leisure activity in 2008, there were over 922 million international tourist arrivals, with a growth of 1.9% as compared to 2007. International tourism receipts grew to US$944 billion (euro 642 billion) in 2008, corresponding to an increase in real terms of 18%. However, the successful of tourism may result different effects in each country. The impacts can be divided in three main categories, they are economic impacts, socio-culture impacts, and environmental impacts. Each category includes both positive and negative impacts. Not all impacts are applicable to every community because conditions or resources differ. Different groups are often concerned about different tourism impacts. To generalize, when one group embraces the economic impacts of tourism, another group experiences social and cultural impacts, while another is affected by tourism environmental impacts. 1. Tourism Today

Tourism today is very important. Consumers will be ready to spend a lots of money for their interest. as far as expensive as any place and any price they will spend time for a vacation. Because today, tourism is not only purely related to entertainment but they are linking tourism with business, science and education. Many people want to know about the culture in other countries as a comparison with their own cultures.They want to figure out the people of local communities and make a friendship These opportunities exploited by businessmen who wanted to make a profit from the tourism. They build and improve infrastructure to better to facilitate the tourists. However, beside the good things of tourism both tourist and facilitators sometime ignore the roles and regulations that imposed by local government which they don’t realize it. The tourists only know they had to pay dearly and want to get satisfactory service, they only know that they feel happy. And the facilitators just know that they get profit, profit and profit. These things will only add to the adverse effects of tourism 2. Economic Impacts

A goal of developing the tourism industry in a community is maximizing selected positive impacts while minimizing potential negative impacts. First, it is essential to identify the possible impacts. Understanding that tourism development may result in many and complex impacts suggests that local elected officials, the tourism industry, and community residents need to work cooperatively and carefully to plan for its growth and development. The advantages of economic impact of tourism:

a. Contributing to government revenues
• Direct contribution are generated by taxes on incomes from tourism employment and tourism businesses, and by direct levies on tourists such as departure taxes. • Indirect contributions come from taxes and duties levied on goods and services supplied to tourists. b.
