ABSTRACT
This research investigates the relationship between emotional intelligence and effective leadership among leaders of selected business operating in PortHarcourt. Emotional intelligence was identified as the independent variable and effective leadership as the dependent variable. The literature provided, discusses the two variables of emotional intelligence and effective leadership. Information was gathered using two instruments from a sample of 50 leaders and raters. The leadership evaluation construct questionnaire was used to determine leader’s effectiveness, while the emotional competence inventory (ECI 2.0) was used to determine the emotional intelligence of the leaders. Data obtained from each of the research instrument was then analyzed, statistically. Through spearman rank correlation, it was concluded that there is a significant relationship between a leader’s personal emotional competence and personal effectiveness, social emotional competence and interpersonal effectiveness, social emotional competence and managerial effectiveness, social emotional competence and operational effectiveness, and lastly, between a leader’s social emotional competence and societal effectiveness. The research therefore adds new dimension to emotional intelligence and effective leadership, and contributes to the bank of findings relating to these concepts as the research was conducted in the Nigerian context.
