The contemporary situation of Muslim women is different all around the world is Islam. It cannot be clearly defined as good or bad. This is not just the result of the division of society between rich and poor, as in the rich Gulf countries, women have less freedom than in a poor village in Syria.

Some argue that women’s rights have expanded because they are considered equals in God’s eyes, are allowed to vote, and the government has attempted to broaden women’s rights. However, previous women rights have been taken away, laws favor men, and women are commonly valued for appearances.…

The creation of Islam came about from the prophet Muhammad. Islam means submission to G-d, otherwise known as Allah to the Islamic people. Muhammad was someone who knew how to capture the attention of the people and did so very successfully. He spoke with passion and brought together the Arabian tribes who had been fighting for many years. Once united, Muhammad influenced these tribes to convert to Islam. Immediately following his death, the tribes who were once united broke apart and began fighting the way they had been before Muhammad came into place. After the death of Muhammad, it was the caliph’s job to continue spreading Islam throughout the world. Caliph literally means the deputy to God’s messenger. The first caliph, Abu Bakr, Muhammad’s best friend, father-in-law, and one of the first people to convert to Islam, stopped the fighting and the Islamic tribes were once again reunited.…

Burqa, Chador, Foulard, headscarf, Nijab and Niqab, are all different names for diverse types of veils. Some of them cover the whole body, leaving only the hands and the eyes to be seen, whilst others simply cover the hair, or face. The variety of veils range from, the uniform black cloaks, worn by women in post revolution Iran, to the exclusive designer scarves of the aristocracy in Egypt. Helen Watson, in, Women and the Veil: Personal Responses to Global Process, speaks of the brightly colored scarves of Turkish peasants girls, the tie racks for European Muslims, the white Haik of Algerian women, and the Burja of women in Oman. This continuum of veiling, runs from state regulated attire to individual fashion accessory, and leaves expression for various local varieties. All of these different styles of veils hold a universal, formal, symbolic and practical aim; the Hijab preserves modesty and conceals the shame of nakedness.…
