Female and Creative Young Woman
From the play: Tomorrow’s Wish (by Wade Bradford)
CONTEXT: Juniper is a creative young woman with learning disabilities. Her cousins believe Juniper is odd because she lives in a small town with her grandmother, sheltered away from most of the world. In this scene, she is talking to her cousin, Megan, about her first and only kiss. This original comedic female monologue may be used by students, actors, directors for educational or professional purposes.

JUNIPER:
I kissed a boy once. At least I tried.
I don’t know if it counts if they don’t kiss back. But I tried to kiss a boy and it almost worked. Most of the time Grandma and I don’t get to see folks much, but we go into town. Sometimes. And Grandma says
I just have to be careful to mind my manners, and Grandma says I’m real good at being careful, but sometimes I get so bored in that little town. Only one video store. Only two churches.
And the park only has two swings and a pool that never gets filled up anymore. But in our little town there is a boy named Samuel.
He's a bag-boy at the grocery store. He does it just right and never squishes the eggs.
And he has red hair and green eyes. And…
(Laughs at the memory.)
Freckles all over his face! And Samuel is so nice. So nice to me and Gram. He would always smile and always say “thank you” and “your welcome.”
If he says, “Have a nice day,” then you do. That’s how good he is at his job. And I always wanted…
I always wanted to be close to him, or to talk to him, without Gram around. And one day when
Grandma had a really bad cold I got to go to the store all by myself. And I bought some oyster crackers and some medicine. Then I got to watch
Samuel all by myself. Watch him do his bag boy job.
I just stared and stared, trying to count all of those handsome freckles. Then, he asked if there was anything else I wanted. I just whispered “Yes.”
(Pauses, closes eyes in remembrance.)
And then I grabbed him by the ears and MmmmmmmMM!

Many of the modern television shows and movies use similar themes and subject matter as “A&P.” Things like young girls trying to appear older than they are, an awkward young man coming to terms with his sexuality, and the idea of conventional masculinity are all commonly found in the media. The question of how an adolescent girl’s mind works is that one that cannot be easily answered, but attempts are often made. The character of Sammy is virtually clueless about females, and Updike makes this obvious, “You never know for sure how girl’ minds work (do you really think it’s a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?).” When this story was written the dynamic between young men and women was not as readily explored, but today it is a source of entertainment. High school dramas have taken over prime time television. However, this story is not one of drama, but rather ironic humor. The reader anticipates Sammy to act like a typical teenage boy, and mirror the actions of his coworker. Instead, he connects to them on a more emotional level, which leads him to act irrationally. Updike turns what could have been another typical teenage story into a satire of society’s expectations on sexuality and gender.…

“You seem to me like a boy who has some intelligence, so I will try to use small words and speak slowly. Somewhere between your left and right ear, they may be a very small particle called a brain cell. I know it may be deformed, partially functioning, or taking a nap at the moment. However, in place of me, forcing it to wake up and exploding, I’ll lower my voice as I let you in on a little secret,” she then whispered, softly and even slower. “I now have proof that handsome also comes in the flavor of stupid,” she now spoke in her normal voice. “I have had a hard time listening to one compliment after another, and little else. At lease, you’re the only guy who didn’t start off with how special you are and how lucky I am to be in the same room with you. Then and again, I might have been hasty on the, you…

    Women in the Art World

Women have always been seen as an object to define the meaning of beauty. For centuries now women have been seen as the art piece and not the artist. There aren’t many women contributions to art from back then because women were seen as human beings just meant to cook, clean and be nice to gaze upon. Women weren’t recognized for their intelligence and if a woman was outspoken about it, she was either shot down or considered to be that of a manly nature. As Aristotle said, “…between male and female, the former is by nature superior and ruler, the latter inferior and subject”(Adadevoh). The quote by Aristotle shows us well of what man thought of woman back in that time. There has been a drastic change in the view of women as artists, as equal rights for women made itself more prevalent in today’s society.…

When I first came to America I saw a lot of different and shocking things, some good and some bad. The one that affected me the most was the “teen mom” effect. I noticed that in this country, where freedom is valued as one of the most important pillars of society, a lot of young people are chained by the responsibility of being young parents. As I started making more American friends, I started seeing that around thirty percent of them had children, and at least seventy-five percent of them know someone close to them that did. This not only struck me as odd but also as a problem in the society. In Saudi Arabia, where I am originally from, most of the people my age are abroad in college, living with their parents, or learning the family business. If a teenage pregnancy does occur, it is taken care of under Islamic terms. Coming to America and seeing this phenomenon has triggered lots of questions in my mind. How do the parents of the young teens react? Are these teens as promiscuous as I think they are? How are they able to take care of the children they brought into this world? And lastly, I would like to know if these teens were actually ready to be parents? Due to all these questions I decided to seek out a teen mom; her name is Maria, and she had her first child, Santiago at the age of seventeen. Currently, Maria is twenty-one now and Santiago is four, here is their story. After reading it, I believe you will agree with my thesis, teen mothers should not be ostracized from society because of the children they bear, instead they should be encouraged to not be a statistic and educated through the societal resources available for them.…

In the 21st century young Australian women are considered the lucky ones, we have more opportunities, more freedom and more equality than any other women in the world. When reflecting on the women in Australian society, we realize that the suffering and the challenges of those women who have come before us have enabled us to live the lives we do today. We can be whoever and do whatever we want with nothing to stand in our way. Young women in Australia today are just a distant reminder of a past world filled with gender exclusion, sexism and discrimination. I believe young women in Australia generally to do not suffer from marginalization, I believe however that it depends who you and how society views you as an individual will instead determine this. Throughout Australian history the evolution of women has been both challenging and inspiring. The age old assumption that the role of a young women is to cook, clean and have children is a stereotype that to this present day still exists. For a long period of time young women were denied access to education, healthcare, equality or freedom, with the understanding that women should be seen and but not heard.…
