Discuss The Meaning Of The Crucible By Abigail Williams
Concerning the title, Miller's subtlety as a writer is demonstrated in choosing The Crucible for his play. The crucible is a tool for purification, that only happens under the intense heat of the crucible, so he clearly meant that title as a metaphor to imply the adversities that his Salem community must go through, and thus, some are refined, and some prove their true metal which is not very high ( Dukore 70).

Miller successfully applies the title to his characters. Abigail Williams is a clear manifestation of the crucible. When she undergoes her own trail, being known with "an endless capacity of dissembling" (I i 9). When reverend Hale increases the pressure on her she does not falter to accuse Tituba, the slave of witchcraft and dealing

    In the Drama “The Crucibles” by Arthur Miller, creates an intensifying and motivating situation that keeps readers on their toes eager to find out what happens next. Miller gives a dramatical attitude and emotion in the situation that is scattering in Salem. Miller emphasizes the plot/situation in the text through a few specific characters, their conflicts, and transition of the plot in every act. Miller describes the plot through 3 main characters; John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail Williams. I liked how throughout the play miller focused on the conflict in between the 3 characters which impacted the overall plot of the play, through each act. John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor’s husband is committing the sin of adultery with Abigail Williams, secretly. He tries to save his reputation by demonstrating he’s faithful to god and his wife Elizabeth in the court. Miller gives a sudden twist with Mr. Proctor that totally changed the conflict’s view point of the play towards the ending of the play. Mr. Millers indicates us with a really good plot, the way that it is expressed throughout the drama just made me feel intense and eager to want to keep reading. Miller shows motivation and commitment to trials. Furthermore, he also shows faith in God or in other words Christianity. In Act I, Miller opens up the plot with an abrupt start of John Proctors and Abigail Williams’s secret love affair, as miller describes how Abigail approaches to john maliciously by sweet talking to him and causing him to feel guilt and shame for what he did to her before. This shows how Miller uses a conflict within a conflict to create the mood of the drama. In the play Miller writes; Abigail: (grasping his hand before he can release her) “John- I am waitin’ for you every night.” Proctor: “Abby, I never give you hope to wait for me.” Abigail: (Now beginning to anger-she can’t believe it).…

    The Crucible takes place during one of the several dark periods of American history. In The Crucible, the justice system of the time was inaccurately portrayed. In Act III, Reverend Hale claims that he has signed seventy-two death warrants close to the end of the Salem Witch Trials: “Excellency, I have signed seventy-two death warrants; I am a minister of the Lord, and I dare not take a life without there be a proof so immaculate no slightest qualm of conscience may doubt it.”(Miller 92). This is not possible as the government setup could not possibly allow it. During the Salem Witch Trials a member of the clergy such as Revered Hale was not allowed to carry out the long arm of the law (judiciary action). The afflicted girls usually gave an indication of the guilt of the accused. The play usually claims that the girls passed out and gave no indicationof moving. In Act III, when Reverend Parris is interrogating Mary Warren in the case of Abigail Williams he has a request: But you did turn cold, did you not? I myself picked you up many times, and your skin were icy” (Miller 98). According to many court papers, the girls did not calmy pass out, they went through extreme convulsions, almost as if having a seizure. This is a second example of falsehood in the judicial system. A third example is the actual court system, according to the play there were only two judges: Danforth and Hathorne. In the introduction to Act III, the setting gives us information about who is presiding in the General Court: “Through the partitioning wall, we can hear a prosecutor’s voice, Judge Hawthorne’s” (Miller77). On the next page, the judge Danforth is then introduced to us as the next judge. In several court papers there were several mentioning of more than just two judges. The full panel of magistrates for the court were in fact named by the new charter, which arrived in Massachusetts on May 14, 1692 were William Stoughton, John Richards, Nathaniel Saltonstall,…
