Development and Training Paper on Verizon Corporation
The purpose of training and developing within any organizations is to improve the overall effectiveness of goods, product and services, competitiveness, and emphasizes growth in all aspects. It also increases productivity, develop employee turnover, increases financial gain, and lessens the managerial and supervisory positions. Training and developing is essential to obtain but many employers have different perspectives of what training and developing means for its organization. Verizon is one of the leaders in innovative wireless communication and in delivering broadband to businesses, mass market, wholesale, government, and it services over 80 million customers across the world. The importance of training and developing is extremely critical for any organization of this size to maintain and remain one of the best in its industry. Needs Assessment

Regarding training, Verizon secured a place within the top 100 ranked organizations in Training Top 100, Working Mother 100 Best, and Computerworld. Additionally, Verizon ranks No. 15 by Training magazine (Reuters, 2009). “Verizon’s total training investment for 2008 totaled $344 million, and employees dedicated 11.7 million hours to training. The vast majority of training was in the areas of customer service, management development, and the broadband, mobile and IP segments of the business” (Verizon, 2009, p. 1). Although Verizon has a reputation for top quality training, distinctively with customer service, management, and innovative technological advancements, research shows that safety is a concern that should be further evaluated. Verizon fact sheets illustrate, that in 2008, three work related fatalities occurred. A line worker, among one of the most recent incidences, was electrocuted because his bucket touched a power line. In addition to the worker’s fatality, the explosions from the incident put the neighborhood at risk, causing nearby trees to catch on fire (Race, 2008). Many investigations have indicated that the cause of safety issues result because of the reduction in manpower. Even though the labor force has decreased, required productivity has not. Therefore, workers are increasing their hours, workload, and expectations for meeting demanding job functions, which can be extremely stressful. On the other hand, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has determined the cause of accidents and fatalities at Verizon stem from other issues: operating a bucket truck too close to overhead power lines, failing to put out warning signs or flags in the work area, and failure to properly inspect equipment and tools prior to use. In order to maintain a safe working environment, the implementation of policies and ongoing training must be a priority. Design

Research conducted by Communications Workers of America (CWA) highlights four areas of training that are particularly vital to the success of Verizon’s safety. The training improvements that CWA recommends relate to power line contact with vehicle and aerial lifts, exposure to electric shock - inside and outside, identifying electrical hazards, and health effects from exposure to electrical power and how to resolve hazards (CWA, 2008). Increasing awareness and safety is essential for Verizon and all stakeholders. Making alterations to training and policies would offer Verizon an opportunity for fewer incidences. An evaluation of an applicant’s history is important because it will offer an insight to the individual’s work ethic. Once an individual is selected, he would be required to participate in orientation where he would watch a safety video and take a test on the material observed. An additional video would be shown, indicating the statistics of injuries and fatalities at Verizon in the last five years.
