It was May 1972 when Ita Buttrose was first approached by Sir Frank Packer, owner of the Australian Consolidated Press publishing empire, to be the editor of the new Australian version of the American born Cosmopolitan magazine. Ita herself was a key player in the woman’s movement of the 1970’s, and who had been a role model to other women when she continued to work through her 1972 pregnancy as a single mother. Cosmopolitan are iconic for telling their audience about two main topics; lifestyle and sex. Just by looking at the magazine covers, it is clear that these two topics dominate. I researched the April 2012 cover of Cosmopolitan, it follows the generic conventions of a typical magazine format for a women’s fashion and lifestyle magazine. In terms of the colour scheme - the pink fonts and neutral clothing convey a sense of femininity and perhaps the everyday domestic lifestyle of…

Ms. Magazine had its ups and downs, the downs mostly when it first opened, and the ups when it became very successful and made people realize the truth about society. However through it all the magazine continued to share harrowing truths and to support women and the movement. Ms. Magazine was opened as a “one shot” in The New York Magazine in 1971.…

Cosmo magazine as we know it today was started in the 1960’s during a time of revolution for women. Before the 1960’s it was not common for a woman to have a career, be open about their sex life and their main objective was to be a wife and please a man. The late Editor-in-Chief wanted to change that and made Cosmopolitan the young, single girls “best friend.” She wanted to be able to discuss things that weren’t allowed in common conversation and would cause controversy and change. “The legendary editor of Cosmo from 1965 to 1997, Helen Gurley Brown paved the way for fun, fearless females everywhere.” (White) Cosmo magazine has been a key media resource in the improvement of career equality for women, the relationship and sexual revolution, as well as maintaining a beautiful, healthy image.…
