We can all agree that from birth to death, people change along several parallel pathways, including movement, cognition, and social skills and emotion. But how exactly do these changes take place? Are they sudden and abrupt or gradual? This article explains how developmental psychologists explore differences between people of certain ages based on how gradually or abruptly those differences seem to emerge.
The Continuity Approach
If you have spent any significant amounts of time with young children, there are some aspects of their behavior that seem to change so gradually that you hardly notice. We can compare these aspects of development to the growth of a mighty oak from its beginnings as a little acorn.For example, young parents are unlikely to notice the gradual weight gain of the young infant. From day to day, the parents will respond to lifting the growing child by becoming stronger themselves, so they hardly notice any change in weight. What makes this truly astonishing is that the child is growing at a remarkable rate, especially during the first year of life. According to McCall (1979), if a human child continued his or her growth rate during the first year of life over the next nine years as well, the child at age 10 years would be about the size of a jumbo jet!Another gradual change that seems to sneak up on parents is the child 's increasing vocabulary. Once children start speaking, their vocabularies begin to increase on a daily basis. The typical 18-month-old child might have between 10 and 50 words, but by the time children reach kindergarten age, they have a very mature sounding vocabulary of about 2000 words. Because these are the types of words even adults use most frequently (as opposed to the types of words we learn in high school or college, like hippocampus), you can have a rather sophisticated conversation with a 5-year-old.Children 's social skills might also proceed in a very gradual manner.     The childhood development of the individual followed the normal development patterns that are expected. In the childhood stage the individual development changed rapidly and their ability to be active and learn new skills improves on a daily basis. During childhood a child will grow steadier compared to an infant. A child’s body and organs size grows at a steady pace. By the age of 6 a child’s head will be 90% of a full adult size even though the rest of a child’s body has a lot more to grow and to develop. Until a child reaches late childhood, and entering adolescence, an individual’s reproductive organs are still not fully developed. Infants and children can suffer from delayed development. This could cause potential effects and risks on a person’s development. This can happen in the first 5 years of a child’s life and this can be cause by brain damage, poor or no interaction with care givers, diseases, learning or behavioural disabilities, visual or hearing disabilities. Emotional and social development in a child will change a huge amount due to their change in their daily routine when they going into education and they aren’t around their family as they are used to within infancy. From age 4-9 years old is the first social learning of social development in a child. From a young age, young children are emotionally attached and dependent on their care givers. The change within the introduction of school and social environments can be a struggle for some children to understand. For emotional development the key skills within childhood are understanding self and other, and is a focus within development in schools to ensure that children are aware of who they are the differences within society and other people.     From my perspective, I tend to agree that they both work together simultaneously, but it's hard to really say which one is more dominant because evidence is very fragile.     The kids can learn how to crawl and stand up by 12 months old. At the age of 24 months, the children begin to run, know how to kick a ball and walk around. From when they were born until 2 years old, the children are in the famous developmental stage that the researcher Jean Piaget called the sensorimotor period.
