Considering All That I Have
Considering all that I have read regarding this Star Trek Episode, The Measure of a Man, I can truly say that Piccard had a Dualism view when it came to the situation at hand with Data. He believed that data was a close to being a human as possible. When a robot is given the rank of a Lt Commander, I would have to question this fact. It seems a little strange to give a typical robot that kind of rank. Hasker told us that “Dualism begins by taking quite seriously the fact that human beings have both physical and mental properties.” Piccard I must say took Data very seriously. Data after finding out that he was going to be disassembled by Maddox and he may not be able to put him back together, refuses to have this done. This shows that Data to me must have some human attributes, because no one would volunteer to have that down that was human. Maddox on the other hand had a more idealism view on the subject. He made several reference to Data as “it.”This is something that humans do not refer to one another as. Data was nothing more than an idea to Maddox a computer as some might say. He felt he had no rights as a robot and should not be allowed to refuse to participate in the project. Maddox stats that Data has no soul. To those that worked with Data he was considered one of the family and to those that, like Maddox he was just a robot with a computer processor for a brain. When humans are around many objects we begin having a bond with that object. It’s almost like an alcoholic, they form a bound with their alcohol it is their life.
Maddox states during the hearing that, “Intelligence, self-awareness and consciousness,” are three criteria for a sentient being. Picard proves that Data has all three of these criteria and he proved the case and won and Lt Commander Data was given the right to chose.
I would have to say that I believe that God created us in his image, and I do not feel that Data was created in the image of

Beth, I noticed the same views for the characters in the Star Trek episode we read about. The Materialism and Dualistic views that each had seemed straight forward and they gave me a better understanding of the views and what they entail. I also agree that no matter how complex a machine can get it is still a machine. I think back to my favorite toy as a child and instantly remember my needy little Ferby. I had felt responsible to teach it how to talk and do tricks. I didn’t understand at the time that it was just a little computer that was mimicking my instructions. I think the same can be said about Data in the story. I know it felt all types of emotions when it was going to get destroyed but ultimately I think it was portraying emotions…

In Genesis, the creation of Adam and Eve states that God made the first human in His image. Understading of humanity made in His image has been interpreating in many different ways by the historcial figures throughout church history. What does it mean? And how John Calvin interpreated the image of God?. John Clavin states importance of understanding of the image and likeness of God through his theology. Calvin believes that God created humans in His image in an act of divine love. This means that humans are part of His work, participatein His power, wisdom, and justice to reflect His glory. However, when human beings made sins and choose to be corrupted, the image of Him almost has been corrupted from human. However, Calvin believes that we…

Everything was created by God, in the beginning God created the heavens and earth. (Genesis 1:1) For me this means to treat everything with the same love and respect that I give God, to not love and respect the creation is to not love and respect the creator. His creation is what proves he is real to me, all of the beauty on earth could not have happened any other way. The popular belief of an explosion creating earth is insane, the only thing I have seen an explosion cause is destruction. His creation shows me that he loves not only us but the earth also, he could have made it all look the same. He made it all beautiful, he is the greatest artist of all time.…

The first section focuses on the question of what defines us as human beings and, through numerous examples, clearly demonstrates Alsford’s point that science fiction and the question of “what are we?” are undeniably intertwined. Using a storyline from what is arguably the standard for science fiction- Star Trek- Alsford shows how prevalent the analysis of human nature is. In what is one of the less discrete versions of this, a robot named Data is put on trial to “establish whether it/he has the rights of humans of personhood or is simply property” (27). When viewed through the…

“The Image of God,” is a phrase used to refer to the unique status in the created order of mankind due to the creator God, (Boyd Luther). Scripture never says what is meant by the term “the image of God'. Some theologians believe it is the whole person of man, both material and immaterial that is made in Gods own likeness. Others believe the image refers to the elements of the human’s personality (mind, emotions, and will) of man. Others opted for the human spirit the soul of man.…

For years theologians have sought to understand the image of God. The image of God is seen biblically as reserved only for humans and sets man apart from the rest of creation.[1] Several biblical passages indicate that humanity bears the image of God: Genesis 1:26-27 (the creation account); Genesis 5:1-3 (the transmission of the image of from Adam to his posterity); Genesis 9:6 (the doctrine of the image relative to homicide); Colossians 3:10 (the exhortation to the believer to put on the new man); and James 3:9 (the proper use of the tongue). In this paper I will review three prominent understandings of the image of God and I will present a defense of my own view.…

The idea that we are all created in the image of God is very common to most people, but what does it mean and why is it so important? Most people are familiar with the idea that human beings are created in the image of God. The bible teaches this and it also teaches that we have special status. Often times in the church this is where the idea stops and is never brought into prominence. This is one of the most important ideas in the scripture and when we understand this it changes how we engage ourselves with the gospel. He covers several critical passages from the Bible and explains how powerful the image of god is in these passages and why they are structured the way they are.…
