Communication in the Military

Communication plays an essential role in any institution, especially in the military. The military employs

three basic forms of communication, which are written, verbal and e-mail. All three forms are vital to the success

of the military. Without effective communication in the military regardless of status their cannot be a positive

outcome of any situation with failure to understand what is passed.

Verbal is the most widely used form of communication in the military. This method has an advantage

Over the other forms of communication, this allows the person passing the information to interpret the facial

expressions of those receiving the information being passed. This important fact about verbal communication is

Key because it also allows questions to be asked and discussed on what is being passed which is highly

encouraged in the military, especially for subordinates.

E-Mail is another general form of communication used in the military which is conveniently preferred over

verbal because it allows the sender to keep track of their correspondence for references that can be used later.

Another reason this type of communication is preferred in the Military is because the sender can Cc a recipient to

inform that person what information is being passed to the addressee. With e-mail correspondence this form of

communication is the most direct and instant vices verbal that can easily change from person to person where

there is room for misinterpretation to follow.

The most formal way of communication is by writing, which can be done either with a standard naval

letter, memorandum and endorsements. This method is usually used when addressing senior officials at the

upper levels of the chain of command. Communicating in writing negates any possibility of misinterpretation

because of the strict review process before submission.

Communication in the Military can sometimes also be ineffective if what is presented is not understood

properly by the recipient normally will lead to communication breakdown ending in an unsuccessful mission or

possibly a loss of life. With proper knowledge of the information on what is to be passed and thorough

understanding on how to effectively communicate that information will be more efficient and without doubts or

questions.

Effective Communicating is paramount within the military from day to day operations to deployments

overseas. Mission objectives cannot be successfully completed without proper information being passed up and

down the chain of command. To constantly remain operational communication is the most important element

within the Military and with ongoing changes in today’s Military communication is a requirement.
This paragraph is sourced and accredited from Wikipedia: Historically, the first military communications had the form of sending/receiving simple signals (often hidden or encoded to be unrecognizable for the enemy).
Respectively, the first distinctive tactics of military communications were called Signals, while units specializing in those tactics received the Signals Corps name. Later Signals and Signaler became a highly-distinct military occupation dealing rather with general communication methods (similar to those that in civil use) than with weapons.

Communication to me is a way to get a message out to sent and received to an individual this can be accomplished in a variety of ways. A deaf person will communicate with their hands in the form of sign language. People also communicate through body language, an example that I can give is if a patient is in pain but unable to speak some will start adjusting their body, closing their eyes, wrapping their arms around the area that is in pain, or even rocking motions. When I am in a bad mood I will start to roll my eyes and my words can be short and sharp, sometimes when I want to be extra attractive to my husband I will walk with an extra pep in my step, smile, and bat my eyes. As we can see from the start communication is done in several ways it does not always have to be expressed verbally it can be done written as well. We have to remember that communication is the purpose of getting an idea across to a group, or a person.…

Communication is verbal or non-verbal. Verbal is spoken (oral) which can be accomplished face-to-face. This type of communication is central to establish relationships between people. For example a professional in a hospital will use verbal communication to inform a patient of any procedure or care task that is given. This builds a sense of trust because communicating face-to-face establishes that the professional has time to care for the patient, which makes the patient feel looked after. Verbal communication also allows any questions to be raised and gives opportunity to answer. This is effective as any misunderstanding issues would be raised.…

Verbal communication, either over the phone, video chat, or in person is less likely to be misunderstood. The reason for this is most people can verbalize there sentiments much more easily, allowing them to communicate there more clearly. Various characteristics, such as, body language, facial expressions and vocal tones are definite indicators of how the person is feeling at the time when communicating in person or by video chat. Texting can potentially be misunderstood as the reader cannot properly assess the mood of the person who is ending the message. A statement that is meant to be humorous can be taken seriously, and conversely a serious comment can be taken casually, leaving the reader and sender with a misunderstanding. An area of equal detriment is that the texting is limited to your writing skills. If the sender cannot express themselves well with writing, the reader can become confused or misinterpret what the sender is trying to say. This will cause a breakdown in communication and could quite possibly end in an argument. The use of acronyms can also be very confusing for those who do not text frequently. I have found that I get confused quite often because I do not utilize texting as often as others and I am not familiar with the multitude of acronyms that are used.…
