Barriers To Communication And Effective Communication By Police
According to Gaines and Worrall (2011), the purpose of communication is to achieve the understanding between two or more people. Police personnel can be more efficient and achieve departmental goes if they have the proper communication, handle conflict accordingly, and properly negotiate as well. Communication is essential when it comes to police officers performing their job effectively. Not only do they need the proper communication when patrolling the beat, but when they respond to crime scenes when detaining a suspect, relaying information throughout the chain of command and so on. There are two ways of classifying communication and they are formal versus informal communication and verbal versus nonverbal communication. Formal communication …show more content…
However, there can be many barriers to communication such as language, cultural diversity, gender, and appearance. Me personally, I would say the main barrier is stereotyping. Stereotyping acts as a barrier to communication because people make pre-conceived judgments about people without getting to know them; this is one of the reasons why many people do not like law enforcement. These barriers to communication can distort or prevent communication within an organization. Conflict is a disagreement or argument between two or more individuals. Conflict within the police organization occurs from numerous of reasons. It is said that conflict occurs when there are incompatible goals, too many authority figures, inconsistencies, communication failures and more. There is said to be four types of conflict: interpersonal, intragroup, intergroup and interorganizational conflict. Interpersonal conflict occurs when values and goals are at odd with one another. Intragroup conflict occurs when there are tension and rivalry between with groups in the police organization.
