Question 1: Where did you begin your singing career?
Answer: I started singing gospel music at my church in the choir.
Question 2: What made you decide that you wanted to become a singer?
Answer: After I saw Clara Ward, who was a gospel singer, throw her hat at a funeral; I knew that I wanted to become a singer.
Question 3: What was the first company you signed with?
Answer: John Hammond arranged me to sign a contract with Columbia, which was my first company.
Question 4: Who was your first husband, and did you marriage go well?
Answer: I was married to Ted White, and during the years of our marriage we fought a lot.
Question 5: What was the name of the second company that you signed with?
Answer: I signed a contract with Atlantic second; after I was convinced to by Jerry Wexler, who was a partner in Atlantic Records, to sign with them.
Question 6: How many albums did you make with Jerry Wexler at Atlantic?
Answer: We made about fourteen together at Atlantic Records.
Question 7: Who was your second husband after you and Ted White didn’t work out?
Answer: I married Glynn Turman on April 12th, 1978. We stayed married for about four years.
Question 8: When you went to American Music Awards what awards did you win?
Answer: When I appeared there I won the favorite Soul/R&B video award, the favorite Soul/R&B singer award and also for the song and also video “Freeway of Love”

He never knew his father and his mother struggled caring for him and gave him up for adoption. At the age of three he was adopted by his great aunt Gertrude Franklin, who had cared for him since birth and the only mother figured he had known.
