What is the speaker’s claim?
The speakers claim is even though you may think it might not happen to you, texting while driving is dangerous and can be fatal.
They agree with the speaker they go on to say “With kids that age, I think it's more of an addiction, you know, they have to get that text; they have to be talking to somebody all the time.”

This speech is being told in third person
It makes it easier to get emotionally connected, you can almost relate to what the mom and dad went through.

The whole speech is the evidence, a young girl died as a result of texting while driving.
The girl’s father quotes” I told her, "You've got to stop this. You're going to have a wreck if you continue to do this." But, her mentality was it wasn't going to happen to her

” After Alex died, and we went home, I got on the internet to check her phone records. And my husband came up and he goes, "What are you doing?" And I said, "I want to know if she was texting and driving." And he said she was. ”

Her father told her numerous times that she has to stop texting while driving or she’s going to get in a crash, but she always said that it won’t happen to her and it did.
It makes you think because sometimes I text and drive and think the same thing, and it could very well happen to me too.

The tone of this passage overall is emotional but it is also really sad, and tragic.
You feel sad for the girl and her parents while you read the story even though you have never met them.

According to an article in the Terlingua Daily Express, Golatas, 17, and Smitter, 18, had planned a holiday excursion to festivities in nearby Appaloosa County. Six months later, it was no holiday when a Kiva County grand jury indicted Smitter for vehicular homicide (Buck A1+). Witnesses testified that Smitter was texting while driving along State Route 90 on that July 4. She went into a skid while trying to avoid a van attempting to make a left turn in front of her, but she slammed into it. Golatas was killed, as were two young children in the van. The children’s mother and driver of the other car, Daniella Simpson, was seriously injured, is now paralyzed, and “sentenced to spend the rest of her life confined to a wheelchair” (Kingman 111). I know not to take any life-threatening risks. I understand how dangerous texting and driving is. According to Strayer, a researcher who studied distracted driver for 15 years, “a crash risk that is eight times greater than someone giving the road their undivided attention” (Strayer, “The Science behind Distracted Driving”, pg 139). Obviously, no one wants to increase their crash risky why 800%. In another source, Just/Keller said, “deterioration in driving performance that occurs when one is also processing language [such as texting]” (Just/Keller, “How the Brain Reacts”, pg 147). Additionally, I recognize how texting and driving can devastate families. In the film, “From One Second to the Next”, one of the victim’s sibling talks about how terribly the accident affected her family, “It’s heartbreaking to see my sister like this”(Elizabeth, Debbie’s sister, Herzog August 2013). I know that I’m not always responsible or cautious, but I will always be sensible and attentive when it comes to texting and driving. Because you know I would never want to hurt our family or break the hearts of anyone I love and care about, you also know that I would never text and drive. I would never ruin a family’s happiness or cause anyone pain. I would never hurt a family, I promise you this. I am also very careful when it comes to making meaningful decisions. I am mindful of what I spend my money on. I only buy what I need such as school supplies or medicine. As you also know, I am currently saving up for college. As for my health, I am in very healthful shape and I rarely get sick or injuries. I don’t do damaging drugs that negatively affect my health.
