Texting and Driving Persuasive
Just before senior year, it was a warm summer night. You were in the car with your friends, blasting music, singing along, and having a conversation on the phone all at the same time. It was all fun and games until you see the bright headlights of a large semi truck, and that was that. Crash!
I’m sure there have been many situations like this one and it is a very distressing concept. Too many people make the wrong decision of texting and driving. When I tell them not to do it, they would just argue, “I’m really good at it though, trust me.” I do understand that it turned into a continuous process; however, that doesn’t mean that accidents can’t happen. That is what they all think, but anything can happen to any driver, at anytime. My friends have learned not to text and drive when I am in the car with them, but that doesn’t mean they don’t do it when they are alone, or when I’m not in the car. In fact, I think that is even worse because there is then no one to tell them, “Look out!” or “Stop!” By this point there is no turning back, just heartbroken family members and friends. Every day I see at least one person texting and driving, and it makes my heart skip a beat. Not only am I worried for that person to get in an accident, but I’m concerned for me, and other drivers on the road. I notice them driving carelessly, and swerving on the road. No matter what kind of situation you’re in, there are no good ones when it comes to the road. When my brother got his license he was caught texting and driving by my mom’s friend who then told her. She was furious!
“Luke!” My mom snapped. “Why would you even think of texting and driving? You can get killed.”
“It was only once; I don’t do it often though!” remarked Luke.
“No matter how many times you do it, it only takes one accident to kill you.” replied my mom, with fire in her eyes. She was very angry that day because she thought better of him. She too knows the bad of texting and driving; therefore, she is a strong

I know not to take any life-threatening risks. I understand how dangerous texting and driving is. According to Strayer, a researcher who studied distracted driver for 15 years, “a crash risk that is eight times greater than someone giving the road their undivided attention” (Strayer, “The Science behind Distracted Driving”, pg 139). Obviously, no one wants to increase their crash risky why 800%. In another source, Just/Keller said, “deterioration in driving performance that occurs when one is also processing language [such as texting]” (Just/Keller, “How the Brain Reacts”, pg 147). Additionally, I recognize how texting and driving can devastate families. In the film, “From One Second to the Next”, one of the victim’s sibling talks about how terribly the accident affected her family, “It’s heartbreaking to see my sister like this”(Elizabeth, Debbie’s sister, Herzog August 2013). I know that I’m not always responsible or cautious, but I will always be sensible and attentive when it comes to texting and driving. Because you know I would never want to hurt our family or break the hearts of anyone I love and care about, you also know that I would never text and drive. I would never ruin a family’s happiness or cause anyone pain. I would never hurt a family, I promise you this. I am also very careful when it comes to making meaningful decisions. I am mindful of what I spend my money on. I only buy what I need such as school supplies or medicine. As you also know, I am currently saving up for college. As for my health, I am in very healthful shape and I rarely get sick or injuries. I don’t do damaging drugs that negatively affect my health. I also exercise daily so I don’t run out of breath while walking up the stairs. On top of exercising, I eat my recommended amount of fruits and vegetables and never eat too much sugar than advised. Along with health and finances, I am cautious and responsible when it comes to my…

“Composing a typical text message is roughly akin to closing one 's eyes for nearly five seconds, during which time a car going 55 mph covers more than the length of a football field” (Savitz 2012). Due to the technological advances of the smartphone, and the fact that 50% of all teenagers admit to texting while driving, deaths of teenagers from texting while driving has skyrocketed. The latest data shows that over 3,000 teenage drivers died and over 300,000 were injured last year, as a result of teenage texting while driving. “The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that it is to blame for 11 teen deaths each day” (Savitz 2012). These deaths and injuries now make teenage texting while driving the leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States. With laws making no difference on whether drivers text, the number of deaths attributed to teenage texting while driving will only rise in the coming…

Texting and driving is so common that it increases the chances of having an accident at any moment no matter how much control you think you have over what's happening, not only can it increase accidents but you can also harm yourself and others, and just when you think that's all that can happen I tell you that you can kill too. So unless you plan on being someones "bitch" in jail, I suggest you educate yourself a little on the wrong that you are doing. Just think to yourself "Is this conversation really that important?" That weekend for our high school was a difficult one. Losing so many people in one weekend was not only heartbreaking but a record. All those deaths were teenagers and they were all from reckless driving. Just one of those wrecks was due to the dinking and driving. After Tyler Henson’s death I realized that texting and driving was a big deal. Most of the people around me did it. My Mom came home one day with a ticket for driving recklessly due to her texting and driving. Which, she began to lecture me on why I should not text and drive. I had heard her say this to me just about every week since…

There's reasons why teens decided to use their phone while driving. Teens that observe their parents or friends driving while texting and driving, adapts them to say “if they can do, I can do it too”. Another statistic from “Texting and Driving Safety,” says that “48% of young drivers have seen their parents drive while talking on the phone,” – also, 15% teen drivers have viewed their parents text while driving. Like I said, teens get influenced by their parents, and do as they do. But teens shouldn't follow their footsteps. Teens should know that is dangerous, but no, they tend to do it because they think it's easy and not that dangerous. A percentage of 55 shows that young drivers think it's easy to text and drive, and 77% feel confident that they can safety drive while usage of phone and…

Is it really worth risking your life to tell someone “lunch was nice” or “I’ll be home soon”? Is it worth leaving a child fatherless and asking questions like “Mum, who will look after me if you go to heaven like dad?” as was the case for 5 year-old Harry Stortz after his Dad Jason was killed by an under-age, unlicensed texting driver? Harry will never get to see his Dad again just so someone could make arrangements to pick a girl up and go to his mate’s house. This is just one horrible example of the vast number of deaths caused by texting while driving.…

As if drunk driving wasn't dangerous enough, put anyone with a cell phone behind the wheel and it gets much worse. "Vehicle crashes are one of the top causes of death for just 15-20 year olds" (Thomas, 2009). "Emma Vieira, 19, of Colchester, Vermont, left a woman in a coma and killed a dog as a result of an accident back in August of 2011. Vieira was texting at the time of the accident.
